During Flyers - At High Risk of Blood Clots
London: There is good news for air passengers who are at high risk of fatal blld clots during long haul flights.
European scientists are now developing a computerised plastic strip that could assess the risk of the condition -- known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) -- through a simple blood test among flyers.
The new system would require one drop of blood, which would be analysed by a biochip for blood clotting markets that indicate a high risk of DVT, the Daily Mail reported.
Immobility on flights can lead to DVT, when a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the legs which can be dangerous if left untreated. If this travels to the lungs, a pulmonary embolism can result in the lungs collapsing and heart failure.
According to the report, researchers in eight european countries are developing the technology for the DVT system and other "smart plastics" to monitor body functions, such as a sensor wristband for measuring electric smog to warn pacemaker patients of life-threatening exposure.
Professor Karlheinz Bock, head of Polytronic Systems at German research institute Franunhofer IZM, which is taking part in the European Union project, said; "This example shows clearly the possibilities for polytronics.
"In a networked world, oriented towards people, inexpensive, multifunctional systems are needed. In this manner, we can construct small, handy, and easy-to-use systems that for the most part make life easier for the sick and elderly," added Bock.
The single-use cartridge plate could be carried around by anyone at risk of clotting disorders. Initially it is expected physicians would read the results through a little hand-held scanner. But like diabetics are currently able to read their insulin levels with personal monitors, it is expected those at risk of DVT would eventually be checking their own blood clotting levels.

BLOOD TEST - During Health
Blood test to let transplant
patients skip biopsies
A gene-based blood test worked as well as a surgical procedure used to check for signs of rejection in patients with heart transplants, US researchers said on Thursday. They said the simple blood test called AlloMap, made by molecular diagnostics company XDx Inc. will allow heart transplant patients to forego frequent biopsies of the heart, a procedure dreaded by many transplant patients because it is uncomfortable and can damage heart valves in a few patients. "This represents a major step forward in the way we manage a patient after hart transplants because we can now said Dr Hannah Valantine of Stanford University, who designed the study to determine whether it was safe to reduce the number of necessary biopsies by using the blood test.
Bottled up anger can kill heart patients:
People with heart disease might want to take a careful look at how they handle their feelings of anger. Researchers at Tilburg University in the Netherlands found that heart disease patients who suppressed their anger had nearly triple the risk of having a heart attack or dying over the next 5 to 10 years. The researchers investigated the interplay among "Type D" personality, anger, anger suppression, and outcomes in heart disease patients. People with Type D personalities are prone to suffer from anger and other negative emotions, and find it difficult to express themselves in social situations.
Preemies face lifetime lung trouble:
Children born extremely early -- at 25 weeks or before -- may risk a lifetime of lung problems, including asthma, British researchers reported on Thursday. They found that extremely pre-term babies who lived to age 11 aften had abnormal lung function and were twice as likely as children born at a full 39 or 40 weeks to be diagnosed with asthma. "Many ofthese children may not be receiving appropriate treatment," said Janet Stocks of University College London, who led the study.

BOLLINGER, ASHWIN DO
THE TRICK AS CSK DEFEND
MODEST 142 TO MAKE FINAL
Navi Mumbai: The dream is on -- Chennai Super Kings are in the final. No one gave them a chance defending 142, but MS Dhoni's boys had other ideas. An outstanding performance by the bowlers and the fielders did the job as CSK restricted Deccan Chargers to 104 to notch up a 38-run win and seal a clash against Mumbai indians on Sunday. Doung Bollinger (4-13) and R, Ashwin (1-14) were sunperb as Deccan Chargers struggled to up the tempo. Muttiah Muralitharan gave all the creadit to the bowlers for the victory. "Ashwin and Bollinger bowled brilliantly and the credit goes to them, "an ecstatic Murali said.
Earlier, a poor start and some disciplined Deccan Chargers bowling, forced CSK to post a mediocre 142/7. In conditions aiding fast bowling, Ryan Harris boosted Deccan with a double-strike in the Powerplay and the support bowlers kept chipping away in the middle overs to forestall a major recovery promised by MS Dhoni and S Badrinath. S Anirudha struck some important blows in the final few overs to somewhat redress the damage done earlier and gave something for his spin-strong attack to defend.
Dhoni's assessment of the pitch and conditions proved accurate, but he had backed his top order to see off the early swing and movement while deciding to bat. However, they let him down, Matthew Hayden and Suresh Raina in particular. The ball nipped off the pitch both the pitch both ways, resulting in the ball evading the outside edge on more than one occasion and creating opportunities for Deccan with the attacking field set by Adam Gilchrist.
There were three dropped catches in the Power play; Hayden was dropped twice, at extra cover and gully, and Raina, too, closed the face too early to get the leading edge, only to be given a reprieve by T suman, again at gully.
The manner in which the top order unraveled after being granted a second life was an indication of some undisciplined batting. Hayden repeated the shot that almost got him the first time, playing loosely to extra cover. Raina stepped out and made room to nick one to Gilchrist, and Vijay decided to play off the back foot to a full delivery to be caught plumb.
