IPL CRICKET 2010
Deccan Vs Delhi Daredevils
Symmo bowls Chargers to win over Delhi
Cuttack: Deccan Chargers are stepping it up nicely. The defending champions were slow off the blocks in IPL-III but have made a strong declaration of intent with three wins on the trot, the latest a 10-run win coming at the expense of Delhi Daredevils, who were restricted to 161 for nine.
Outwitted for most part of their innings after deciding to bat first in the day-nighter at the Barabati Statium on Sunday, Chargers stuck to their guns and played the crucial junctures brilliantly after Daredevils' carnage at athe top through David Warner and a late charge by skipper Dinesh Karthik (45, 27b, 4x2, 2x6) took them closer to the bosts' 171 for six.
Warner (57, 33b, 4x4, 3x6) took nine of Chaminda Vaas' first and clattered RP Singh for 20 in the wecond over but the Chargers kept their wits about them and waited for the daredevils to play into their hands.
Frustrated by Pragyan Ojha, Virender Sehwag fell to a fine catch by Herschelle Gibbs deving in front at long-off to scoop the ball dipping on him and AB de Villiers was cleaned up by debutant leggie Rahul Sharma-he had a baptism by fire, conceding a six off the first delivery he bowled. But it was clear the Chargers had no intention to end up second best on the day their self-belief shining under lights when push came to shove.
Warner was done in by Vaas' smart work in the field to terminate a 51-run partnership for the second wicket. When Rahul Sharma cleaned up AB de Villers for 27 (26b, 2x4) the match was nicely poised with Daredevils 98 for three in 12.2 overs and skipper Karthik-who dept his opposite number waiting at the toss-threatening bo go on the rampage.
Karthik did well to whittle down the target nicely; they got 17 from the 18th over bowled by Rahul, which meant they required 37 from 18 deliveries when Gilchrist threw the ball to Andrew Symonds-who else?- and he returned three for 21, striking twice in the penultimate over of the innings.
He plucked a catch out of thin air on his follow through to see the back of Karthik and the Daredevils' chase fell apart-they needed 14 from the last over by Vaas. for the first time in the tournament the Lankan seamer did not get his team early wickets but two from first two balls off the last over sealed Delhi's fate, which probably could have been something else had they not conceded 56 runs in the last five overs.
And that after they scalped Gilchrist for 24 (14b, 4x4, 1x6), Gibbs (31, 26b, 2x4, 2x6) lent his delicate 'touch' to the innings and Symonds rattles 35 (24b, 3x4, 2x6) but if Chargers-who made three changes- could post a winning total after they were tied up in knots by the Delhi spinners early on, it was in the main due to Rohit Sharma's 45 (30b, 3x4, 3x6) and Suman's unbeaten 29 (19b, 3x4, 1x6).
