Trisha - NO COMPARISONS

' I am not a wild
party person'

Trisha's excitement is like that of a kid's. The actress is currently busy with her first Bollywood flick, and if the film manges to succeed, it is likely that she will continue to spice up Hindi cinema like her predecessors, Asin Thottumkal and Genelia D'Souza.
But the actress feels that comparison with Asin and Genelia at this point is unfair, as she has just stepped into Bollywood waters. "Asin has been in Mumbai for close to two-and-a-years. And Genny has been here for quite a while too. So, I wouldn't wnat any comparisons with them. They've already proved themselves," muses the actress.
However, Trisha feels that what will work in her favour is the fact that in the south, she doesn't have any set image. "I can be moulded the way a filmmaker wants. That is my strength," she adds.
Finally, on her reputation of being a wild party girl, all Trisha has to say is, "That's unfair. I don't think I'm like that."

Manisha Koirala - A SPECIAL DAY

A low-key wedding ?

Manisha Koirala, who's all set to tie the knot with her Nepali fiance Samrat Dahal on June 19, is not expecting too many of her friends from Mumbai to arrive in Kathmandu on the most special day of her life. Only Manisha's best friend Deepti Naval, who recently directed the actress in her directorial debut Do Paise Ko Dhoop Chaar Anne Ki Baarish, confirmed her presence at the wedding.
The wedding, according to Bollywood's hushed whispers, is not qquite safe to attend. Says an actress-friend of Manisha, "I'd love to go. But Nepal is not high on my list of seeable countries. One hears about the violence there. It isn't safe."
Sadly, even the big post-wedding reception that Manisha had planned in Mumbai is not ahppening, Says the lovely actress, "I had planned a big do for all my friends in Mumbai right after the wedding. But that seems unlikely now, Family and friends in Delhi also want to host a reception. So we can't have one and ignore the other. We'll leave for our honeymoon immediately after the wedding. After we come back, I plan to have a reception-cum-birthday party."

Aruna Shields - RED HOT

Nude Aruna escapes
Censor Board's cut!
Hot UK actress' role was rejected by 60 actresses

There is good news for fans of Aruna Shields, London's desi import to Bollywood, who brought new meaning to sizzle by lighting up the screen wearing a bikini opposite Vivek Oberoi in Prince. The Censor Board has passed Manu Kumaran's fiolm in which the hot actress has appeared nude and done some torrid love-making scenes with actor Prashant Narayanan. But...with an "A" certificate.
No matter, director Pravesh Bhardawau who insisted on retaining three lengthy love -making scenes in this avant gtarde  film,is  relieved. This role was turned down by over 60 actresses who didn't want to go fully nude before the camera. And at this stage, to have those scenes deleted would be disastrous for the film. It was made with a low budget, using just four characters and a hand-held camera in 'world cinema' style.
Apparently, thye censors were divided over the nudity in the film. Some members wanted to delete the scenes entirely. Others suggested that Aruna's exposed butt be blurred in the over-the-top scenes. The nudity, said Pravesh, is not meant to titillate but more as a psychological impact.
Aruna, an Anglo Indian theatre artist who has done some forgettable UK comedy-sex-drama films (including Jag Mundhara's Private Moments), plays the muse of her painter lover in this film and does some Kate Winslet-type scenes from TRitanic.  Her nudity, now that it has been passed, will be a first for INdian viewers because the censors had snipped off the too-graphic scenes from Titanic.

Meera Nandan - ROLL CALL

DAMSEL IN
DELIGHT!
...that's what actress Meera Nandan is today as Chennai Times finds out

She might not have emerged an award winner after  Valmiki,  but her convincing performance in the film did not go unnoticed. Certainly a cause for cheer for the bubbly Meera Nandan. who has several reasons to be happy, including her next project,  Ayyanar, the audio of which released yesterday.
Just back from the UK, where she had been for stage shows, the actress begins, "My role in Ayyanar, which has been directed by Rajamitran, is very different from the one I played in Valmiki. I play Anita, a college student who is into volleyball and Aadhi plays the coach. Anita meets the coach by accident in the film. Initially, she has a very badimpression of him and suspects his intentions. However, she ends up being the only person with whom he shares all his problems!"
Playing a sportsperson can never be easy. Especially, If you are not one in real life. Testifies Meera with a smile, "The real Meera is very different from Anita.I'm not a sportsperson in real life. In fact, I don't even know to catch a ball hurled at me. But that was one reason why I was so particular about playing this character. i wanted to take it up as a challenge. In fact, I was trained by a state level volleyball player in Chennai for a few days."
And it wasn't just the role that was challenging. A song in the film too was tough, she adds. "This particular song was shot in Ooty. I had to run for quite a while. On the third day of the shoot, I was exhausted because I had to run under the sun. In fact, I was so tired that I began wishing that this song would end."
She is all praise for her co-star in the film, Aadhi, who, she says is a good friend."Aadhi is very comfortable to work with. He ensures that his fellow artistes are in a cheerful mood."
Speaking about pleasant experiences, ask her about her recent UK tour and she says, "A big group of Malayali artistes and technicians had gone to the UK for stage shows and I was a member of that group. I enjoyed the tripo thoroughly. I get attached to people very fast and there were some people with me on this trip that I've become thickfriends with. In fact, I'm already missing being with them and am watching the pictures and videos we shot."
Finally, ask her what else is on the cards for her and she says, "I'm doing two other films. Surya Nagaram  in Tamil with Rahul and Or Idathoru Post man in  Malayalam with Kunjcko Boban."

Health Issue: SHORT CUTS

SHORT CUTS

Human livers to be grown
in lab in 5 years?

In what could be called a major breakthrough, scientists have developed a new technique which they claim could allow the growth of livers in the laboratyory for transplantation into humans within five years. A team at Massachusetts General Hospital has developed the technique which works by effectively chemically stripping the old liver down too its basic"scaffold" or exoskeleton in a process called "decellularisation". Onto this frame of connective tissue and blood vessels, the new liver is then regrown using stem cells from the patient. Stem cells from embryos could also be used. The brand new liver is then transplanted back into the patient.

Health Issue: Blood pressure pills

Blood pressure pills
increase risk of cancer

London: Some of the world's most popular blood pressure pills may slightly increase your risk of getting cancer, according to new research but doctors say it's too soon to ditch the drugs.

In an analysis of five previous studies following about 60,000 patients, experts found a link between people taking medicines known as angiotensin-receptor blockers. or ARBs, and cancer. The drugs are taken by millions of people worldwide for conditions like high blood pressure, heart problems and diabetic kidney disease.
In the analysis researchers found that people who took the drugs had about a 1% higher risk of getting cancer than people who weren't on the durgs. This included a whole range of cancers--prostate, breast and a noticable spike in lung cancer.
About 85% of those people were on telmisartan, sold as Micardis, made by Boehringer Ingelheim Corp. There was no difference in the rate of cancer deaths in people on the drugs compared to those not on them.
The study was published on Monday in the journal, Lancet Oncology No funding was provided for the study, but like Sipahi, the study's lead author, has received past payments from drug makers Pfizer Inc. AstraZeneca PLC and Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc, which all make blood pressure drugs, Other authors reported similar grants from other pharmaceuticals.
"The risk for the individual patient is modest," said Sipahi, associate director of heart failure and transplantation at University Hospitals Case medical Center in Cleveland, "However, when you look at it from the population level, million and million of people are on these drugs and it can cause a lot of excess cancer worldwide."
Sipahi warned patients not to stop taking their drugs, and recommended they consult their doctor if they were concerned. The study doesn't find any such effect in breast cancer patients though. "This is the first time an association between ARBs and cancer development is suggested," Dr Sipahi continued. "While our findings are robust, they need to be replicated in other studies before they can be considered as definitive.

Health Issue: Boon And Bane: Studies

Now, an insulin that requires
no refrigeration

Washington: Here's some good news for diabetics. Scientists have created an insulin which they claim can survive warmth and doesn't require to be dept in a fridge.
Normally, insulin starts to go bad above 4C -- making insulin supply very difficult in areas that don't have refrigeration. Now, an international team, led by Monash University, has successfully strengthened the insulin's chemical structure without affecting its activity and this new insulin doesn't at all require refrigeration.
At the same time, the team's using their new knowledge to develop a form of insulin that could be delivered by pill. "Like milk, insulin formulations need to be kept cold. At temperatures above 4*C , insulin starts to degrade and it eventually becomes inactive. So supplying insulin in areas where fridges are scarce or difficult to maintain presents a real challenge.
"The instability of insulin is closely related to its chemical structure. Insulin is constructed from two different protein chains which are joined together by unstable disulfide bonds. Using a series of chemical reactions, we have been able to replace unstable bonds with stronger carbon-based bridges.

Asia Cup Cricket - @ Sri Lanka

STARTING AFRESH
Dhoni's Boys Will Look To Turn
Things Around After T20 WC Failure
Dambulla: The Asia Cup starts at an interesting time for cricket, since the world is glued to the ongoing FIFA World Cup. Yet, Indian cricket fans can be counted upon to keep the TRPs steady and keep cricket relevant in the face of competition from bigger sports.
More importantly for the players, though, this tournament comes just six to seven months before the 2011 World Cup, also to be played in the subcontinent, Also, MS Dhoni and his boys are looking for a turnaround following indifferent recent form and how they fare here will be interesting to watch.
Fresh from the drubbing they got at the T20 World Cup in the West Indish India go in with much more than a desire for a trophy. They will have to struggle to reverse the ride and set the foundation for better performance in the crucial months leading up to the World Cup.
The selectors will be watching performances closely in an attempt to finetune the team composition before the World Cup. The will be keen to see how newbies like Saurabh Tiwary and Ashok Dinda contribute.
Though India's Asia Cup squad is fortified with the vibrancy of youth, it may be lacking a little in maturity Two old hands -- Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh -- will be conspicuous by their absence. The latter has been discharged of his duties for the time being in order to refresh and rejuvenate his game.
India's key players will be captain Dhoni, his deputy Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and youngsters like Suresh Raina, who recently captained India in the Zimbabwe triseries, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma enhance the side's youth quotient.
While this sides batting lineup looks good, the bowling leaves something to be desired. This series will be an acid test for spearhead Zaheer Khan and the others will be expected to offer him support.
India will be wary of Sri Lanka and Pakistan but Bangladesh too are no write-offs. If anything, they're fast becoming a team to reckon with. The Indians know all about the unpredictability of cricket, what with their recent losses to Zimbabwe.
