Health Issue: SHORT CUTS

SHORT CUTS

Natural birth 'bacteria'
protect baby from asthama
Babies delivered vaginally receive protective bacteria as they pass through the birth canal, a scientist says. Infants born by caesarean section, however, are more vulnerable to asthma, allergies and infection as they miss out on receiveng mothers" good bacteria, according to Professor Patricia Conway, of the University of New South Wales. According to the expert, the bacteria, left on the baby's skin, could then colonize the intestine and help inoculate newborns against hospital bugs.

When asked about details in the photos, the gay men and women were right more of the time, suggesting that they are able to hone in on even very small details as well as the bigger picture.

News: Near-death Study

First study on near-death
Scientists say there is a surge of electrical activity triggered by the brain in the moments before death, apparent from a study of the brainwaves of dying patients

Experts, who have unravelled the mystery of near-death experience, says there is a surge of electrical activity triggered by the brain in kthe moments before death, apparent from a study of the brainwaves of dying patients.
The brain activity was similar to that seen in people who are fully conscious, even though the patients appeared asleep. Soon after the surge abated, the patients were pronounced dead, said Lakhmir Chawla,an anaesthesiologist at George Washington University medical centre in Washington.
Chawla's research, published in the Journal of Palliative Medicine, is thought to be the first to suggest that near-death experiences have a particular physiological cause.
Although it describes only seven patients, he says he has seen the same things happening "at least 50 times" as people die. Other scientific studies suggest that 15-20% of people who go through cardiac arrest and clinical death report lucid, well structured thought processes, reasoning, memories and sometimes detailed recall of events during their encounter with death has prompted the launch of the Awareness During Resuscitation study, known as Aware, led by Sam Parnia, visiting fellow at Southampton University's school of medicine.
"Since the patients (in Chawla's study) all died, we cannot tell what they were experiencing," said Parnia, suggesting the conclusions need to be treated with caution as there was no proof that the eletrical surge was linked to a near-death experience.
Chawla is now planning a further study, using more advanced EEG machines to follow what happens to the brain during death. "Our findings do not really tell us anything about whether there is an afterlife or not. Even if these near-death experiences turn out to be a purely biochemical event, there could still be a God." he said.

Health Issue: 'Acupuncture natualy releaisng pain from Body

'Acupuncture works by releasing
natural painkiller into body'

Paris: Acupuncture eases pain in the limbs because it releases a natural molecule called adenosine, US neuroscientists reported on Sunday.

The mechanism was discovered through experiments in lab mice, which were given an injection of an inflammation-inducing chemical in their right paw. The researchers inserted fine needles below the midline of the mice's knee, at a well known acupuncture location called the Zusanlipoint. They rotated the needle gently every five minutes for 30 minutes, mimicking a standard acupuncture treatment.
During and just after this operation, levels of adenosine in the tissues surrounding the needle surged 24-fold. The mouse's discomfort-measurable by the rodents' response time to touch and heat - was reduced by two-thirds. The same test was carried out on mice that had been genetically engineered to lack adenosine. The acupuncture failed to have any effect, and the mice reacted in discomfort, as before.

News: LEARN IT FROM MOMMY

Kids close to moms have rocking love lives later
Parent-Child Bond In Early Adolescence Helps In Building Stronger Romantic Ties in Adulthood

How well teenagers get along with their mothers might play a major role in shaping their romantic relationships a decade later.
A new study shows that a close relationship with one's mother in early adolescence was associated with better-quality romantic relationships as young adults, Live science reported.
The findings highlight the importance of the parent-child bond for building relationships later in life, the researchers say "Parents' relationships with their children are extremely important and that's how we develop our ability to have successful relationships as adults, cessful relationships as adults, our parents are our models,"said study researcher Constance Gager, of Montclair State University in New Jersey. "So if kids are not feeling close with their parents then they're probably not going to model the positive aspects of that relationship when they reach adulthood."
However, the strength of the parent-child connection later in adolescence, after the age of 14, did not seem to influence the children's romantic relationships when they were older. This might be because late adolescence is too late to hve an impact, Gager said.
"Adolescents may be more fully formed by age 14 so that there's not as much effect of their parents' relationship on them," she told Live Science.
Ganger and her colleagues analyzed the results of a national survey invloving nearly 7,000 married couples in the United States. Between 1992 and 1994, the mothers, fathers and children, aged 10 through 17, were asked about their relationships with each other. About a decade later, between 2001 and 2004, the children, now aged 20 to 27, were surveyed about their relationships with people they were dating (but not living with).
The parents and children were asked to rate statements about the "warmth" and closeness of their relationships. The grown-up children had to answer questions regarding relationship satisfaction and how much conflict they were having with their dating partners.
Only the mother's description of the relationship with her child was able to predict how well those children got along with their serious boy friends / girlfriends later. Specifically, those children with warm and close relationships with their mothers and more satisfaction and less conflict with their significant others.
Although fathers have become more involved in the lives of their children in recent decades, the study suggests it might not quite be enough to have an effect on the children's adult romantic relationships, Gager said, She notes that women are still responsible for two-thirds of the household labor and childcare.

It's about hunger
for runs: Rohit

Bulawayo: Having guided India to a thumping seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma on Sunday attributed his red-hot form tohis hunger for runs. Rohit slammed his second successive century in the ongoing tri-series tohelp India put their campaign back on track with a seven-wicket crushing defeat of Sri Lanka here. The Mumbai batsman was delighted withhis match winning performance.
"It's always nice to get consecutive hundreds, I need to continue with the good form. It's just that I am hungrier for runs," Rohit, adjudged Man-of-the-Match for his 100-ball unbeaten 101, said after the match. "It was nice pitch to bat on, the balls were coming on to bat. But it was also a two paced pitch and some balls not coming nicely. You need to adjust and play shots accordingly," he added. Rohit had hit 114 against Zimbabwe on Friday in India's campaign opener and said the joy of hitting the century was killed by the defeat.
Indian skipper Suresh Raina, for whom Sunday's win was the first as captain, was all praise for the two batsmen but singled out Rohit for special praise."We first bowled well and Rohit and Virat then batted well. Bck-to-back hundreds is always special. Both Rohit and kohli batted brilliantly but man of the show was Rohit," he said. Sir Lankan captain Tillkaratne Dilshan rued that they did not put enough runs on the board.
"When you have 240 runs on the board, you have to bowl in the right areas. It could have been different had we got 280-290 runs on the board. The two run-outs really cost us," he siad.
"There was no help (from the wicket) for the fast bowlers or spinners. They (India) batted well. Now we need to win next match on Tuesday to stay in tournament," he added.

Rohit Cracks Second Ton as India Canter To 7-Wkt Victory

Bulawayo: Rohit Sharma hammered his second successive ODI century as India crushed Sri Lanka by seven wickets in their second match to put their campaign back on track in the tri-series here on Sunday.
Chasing 243, India made a rather slow start and lost both their openers inside 10 overs before one-down Virat Kohli (82) and rohit (101 not out) resurrected the innings to help India romp home with 6.3 overs to spare at the Queens Sports Club. Earlier, the tidy Indian howlers produced a disciplined effort to bundle out Sri Lanka for 242 after captain Suresh Raina had opted to field.
Sunday's win a;so marked Raina's first victory as captain. Coming together in the 10th over, Kohli and Rohit added 154 runs from 168 balls for the third wicket to take the game away from Sri Lanka.
Rohit, who hit 114 against Zimbabwe in India's first match though for a lost cause, hit six fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 100 ball century. This was his second ODI century in his 44th match. He got superb support from Kohli whose 82 came from 92 balls with the help of four boundaries. Opening howler Nuwan Kulaskara and Ajantha Mendis achieved early success by removing Murali Vijay (14) and Dinesh Karthik (18) respectively.
The duo initially dealt mostly in singles with occasional boundaries before opening up later on. They also did not allow the asking rate to jump over five.
Kohli perished in the 38th over while trying to finish the game early. He came down the track to play a lofted shot off a Suraj Randiv delivery only to hole out to long-on fielder Fernando.
When Kohli fell, India needed just 42 runs from more then 12 overs and Rohit ensured that they wrapped up the match without any hiccup. Rohit hit a four off Mendis in the 43rd over to reach his second successive ODI century.
