Drink more water, it helps control BP

Washington: The health benefits of water are manifold. Now, add two more to the list it raises alertness and keeps blood pressure within normal range according to a new study.
Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center have carried out the study and found drinking water increases the activity of the nervous system, which raises alertness, blood pressure and energy expenditure.
They first observed water's corious ability to increase blood pressure about 10 years ago, in patients who had lost their baroreflexes - the system that keeps blood pressure within a normal range.
"The observation came as a complete surprise. We had to unlearn the idea that water had no effect on bolld pressure, which is what all medical students had been told until the last couple of years," lead researcher David robertson said.
Although water does not significantly raise blood ressure in healthy young subjects with intact baroreflexes, the experts found that it does increase sympathetic nervous system activity and constrict blood vessels (which prevents pooling of blood in the extremities).
In their latest study, the researchers found water introduced directly into the stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) raised blood pressure, which ruled out an oral or exophageal mechanism for the response.
The researchers determined that water dilutes the plasma in the blood vessels leading away from the duodenum and that this short-lived reduction in salt concentration is responsible for water's nlood pressure-raising effect.

Undersea gossip? Fish too Talk

The undersea world isn't as quiet as we though, according to a New Zealand researcher who found fish can "talk" to each other.

Fish communicate with noises including grunts, chirps and pops, University of Auckland marine scientist Shahriman Ghazali has discovered according to newspaper reports on Wednesday.
"All fish can hear, but not all can make sound - pops and other sounds made by vibrating their swim bladder, a muscle they can contract," Ghazali told the New Zealand Herald.
Fish are believed to communicate with eachother for different reasons, including attracting mates, scaring off predators or orienting themselves. The gurnard species has a wide vocal repertoire and keeps up a costant chatter, Ghazali found after studying different species of fish placed into tanks.
On the other hand, cod usually kept silent, except when they were spawning. "the hypothesis is that they are using sound as a synchronisation so that the male and female release their eggs at the same time for fertilization. "he said.
But anyone hoping to strike up a conversation with their per goldfish is out of luck. "Goldfish have excellent hearing. But excellent hearing doesn't associate with vocalisation -0 they don't make any sound whats over," Ghazali said.

Night test: Solar-powered plane to fly
non-stop on 24-Hour flight

Payrne (Switzerland): An experimental solar-powered aircraft took off from a Swiss airbase in the early hours of Wednesday. in  a bid to make history by flying round the clock and through the night.

Solar Impulse whirred along the runway at Payerne in western Switzerland, reaching 35 kilometres per hour as lone pilot Ander Borschberg gently lifted into clear skies at 6.51am  (0451 GMT) on a scheduled 25 hgour flight.
"This should be a great day of all goes well," said team chief Bertrand Piccard, who made the first non-stop round-the-world flight in a a balloon more than a decade ago, "It's clear that this is something that is completely different at least for aviation, but it's also something completely different to what has existed in our society," he added moments before take-off.
The ground control crew were due to decide about 13 hours latest, shortly before dusk, whether Borschberg should press on through darkness with his endeavour. The go-ahead will depend on the sun's ability  to charge up Solar Impulse's batteries in the daytime and the threat of strong high-altitude winds.
Borscherg, the plane's sole pilot, will decide by 8pm (1800 GMT) whether to continue through the night, if he goes ahead, the plane will slowly descend to 4.920 feet before midnight, where Borschberg will stay until attempting a dawn landing.
