Health Issue: Drink More Milk Can prostate cancer risk

Friday, August 6, 2010

'Drinking too much milk ups prostate cancer risk'

London: Excessive milk consumption can increase the risk of prostate cancer, researchers have found.

A Canadian research, published in the Prostate journal, found that men who drank four 200ml glasses of milk had double the risk of the disease, reports dailymail.co.uk. Milk contains cow hormones, including insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1). These encourage growth and may help to feed prostate cancer and perhaps, to a leasser extent, ovarian cancer.
...but no danger from coffee: Men can enjoy a cup of coffee without worrying about prostate cancer as experts from South Korea's National Cancer Center found in a meta-study of 12 previous research that coffee doesn't raise the risk of cancer of the gland.

Experts from University Colege London have suggested that a few thousand years ago people avoided milk because it led to gastric pain and upset stomachs. This is because Europeans loacked the gene to produce the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the milk sugar lactose.
However, Walter Willett, chairman of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, says that "many studies have shown a link between high milk intake and risk of metastatic prostate cancer, explained by the fact that high intake increases blood levels of the IGF-1 growth-promoting hormone"

Health Issue: STRONG MEDICINE:

DUI...not of booze, but prescription drugs
Many Painkillers, Muscle Relaxants impair Judgment Behind The Wheel

The accident that killed Kathryn Underdown had all the markings of a drunken-driving case. The car that hit her as she rode her bicycle one May evening in Miller Place, New York, did not stop, the police said, until it crashed into another vehicle farther down the road.
The driver could not keep her eyes open during an interview with investigators, according to the complaint against her, and her speech was slow and slurred. But the driver told the police that she had not been drinking; instead, the complaint said, she had taken several prescription medications, including a sedative and a muscle relaxant.
She was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs - an increasingly common offense, law enforcement officials say, at a time when drunken-driving deaths are dropping and when prescriptions for narcotic painkillers, anti-anxiety medications, sleep aids and other powerful drugs are rampant.
The issue is vexing police officials because, unlike with alcohol, there is no agreement on what level of drugs in the blood impairs driving.
The behavioral effects of prescription medication vary widely, depending not just on the drug but on the person taking it. Some, like anti-anxiety drugs, can dull alertness and slow reaction time; others, like stimulants, can encourage risk-taking and hurt the ability to9 judge distances. Mixing prescriptions, or taking them with alcohol or illicit drugs, can exacerbate impairment and sharply increase the risk of crashing, researchers say.
"In the past it was cocaine, it was PCP, it was marijuana," said Chuck Hayes of the International Assoiation of Chiefs of Police. "Now we're into this prescription drug era that is giving us a whole new challenge."
The police also struggle with the challenge of prosecuting someone who was taking valid prescriptions. "How do we balance between people who legitimately need their prescriptions and protecting the public?" said Mark Neil, senior lawyer at the National Traffic Law Center, which works with prosecutors, "It becomes a very delicate balance."
Some American states have made it illegal to drive with any detectable level of prohibited drugs in the blood, But setting any kind of limit for prescription medications is far more complicated, partly because the complex chemistry of drugs makes their effects more difficult to predict than alcohol's And determining whether a driver took drugs soon before getting on the road can be tricky, since some linger in the body for days or weeks.

Cricket @ Sri Lanka Tour

TWICE UPON A TIME
PARANAVITANA, SANGA SCORE TONS AGAIN AS TOOTHLESS INDIA SUFFER

Colombo: India lacked a bowling 'attack' on Monday. What they had can at best be described as a bowling 'defense'. As MS Dhoni lost the toss for the seventh time in succession in a Test match, an action replay of the first day at Galle played out at the SSC. There, rain had ensured a truncated first day's playOn the first day of the second Test, there was no such luck.
In the morning, they alarmingly found themselves without Gautam Gambhir, who was nursing a niggle, and Yuvraj Singh because of flu, but as expected they went in with an unchanged bowling lineup. their fortunes on the field too remained unchanged. By the ninth over, they had deep points for Ishant Sharma and Abhimanyu Mithun, and by the 20th deep midwicket and long-on had been posted for the spinners. The deep defesive fields were a feature throught the day. It was hardly classic Test match stuff, and the Lankians went promptly into deja vumode, ending the day with the doughty but unspectacular Paranavitana (100;10x4,1x6) and his illustrious skipper Kumar Sangakkara (batting on 13; 225; 15x4,) notchingu their second successive centuries of the series and adding 174 for the second wicket.
Harbhajan Singh again went wicketless, Ishant again tended to bowl short or wide. The run-fest was like a dreary soap opera rerun with endless episode you could afford to miss. You could have sauntered out of the ground, driven around Colmbo and come back to see Harbhajan still landing it outside off to Sanga. But India's problems may have just begun. As Lanka ended the day at 312/2, at the crease along with Sangakkara was Mahela Jayawardene, the same pair which notched up a 624-run stand against South Africa here in 2006.
India will be praying there won't be a reprise of similar epic proportions, but their bowling lineup has rarely been so impotent over the past year or so. Harbhajan Singh, in particular, has struggled to deliver expected results after the departure of Kumble. In five Test matches this year, he has only 12 wickets from eight innings, at a staggering 49.58, with one five-for. Pragyan Ojha is a supporting role, yet he has five wickets from five innings in 2010, at a strike rate of 110.4 and an average which has now ballooned to 62.2.
On the flat pancake at the SSC, it was no surprise they failed to create enough chances and struggled against traditionally good players of spin. They were particularly clueless against Sangakkara, who started off by attacking Ojha before getting a tast for the seamers, who continued with their own travails in these conditions. Ishant and Mithun didn't get any bite off the wicket or swing, struggled often with their length and lacked the sheer pace or variation which could have proved penetrative here. Ishant, in particular, was too short early on.
The match, as it stands, is now Lanka's to lose. With no Malinga and Murali, though, and a revamped bowoling lineup comprising of Dammika Prasad, Dilhara Fernando, Ajantha Mendis, Angelo Mathews and debutant off-spinner Suraj Randiv, India might have their moments yet with the bat.

KISS N TELL: Deepika Padukone and Neil Nitin Mukesh

Neil smooches Deepika Padukone

This is funny. Beil Nitin Mukesh had to Kiss Deepika Padukone on screen for their forthcoming film Lafange Parindey and the actor reportedly got cold feet. Not because he's a virgin screen-kisser and, well, Deepika has the experience of kissing Saif Ali Khan before camera for Love Aaj Kal but, apparently, because Neil's had a no-kiss policy in all his films so far. His first director Sriram Raghavan had thrown a fit when Neil refused to kiss Rimi Sen. In his second film, Tera Kya Hoga Johnny, director Sudhir Mishra insisted Neil kiss Shahana Goswami. But the actor refused. Even in Jail, where there was a love making scene with Mughda Godse, Neil refused to kiss the sultry actress. But Lafange Parindey  director Pradeep Sarkar pulled the plug on Neil's chastity vow. A source from the set said it was a long, torried smooch, comparable in intensity and duration to the Aamir Khan-Karisma Kapur kiss in Raja Jindustani. and Neil was nervous! About what? Kissing the lovely Deepika? Makes us wonder...

HEalth issue: MIND TRICKS About BAd Dreams

Nightmares? Relax, you can control dreams
Troubled with bad dreams? Scientists believe they can ease nightmares by teaching a modern version of self-hypnosis.
According to "Twenty-four Hour Mind' by Rosalind Cartwright, a pioneer in sleep research, even worst night terrors can be soothed. Few people can control dreams in the way the character played by Leonardo Di Caprio steals corporate sereats from the sleeping mind in the film 'Inception'. But dreamers can learn to "guide" them, says Cartwright.
Cartwright says that in the "downtime" of sleep, brain neurons randomly refire images and emotions from the day and "mash them up" into dreams. However, the brain tries to protect the dreamer by releasing chemicals that cut short the worst nightmares.
At dream clinics sufferers are taught "lucid dreaming", or how to become aware they are in a dream. Once that happens, they can control the narraive in many cases, Shelby Harris, who runs a behavioural sleep program clinic, helps sufferers to write such "scripts" by focusing on an image from a recurring dream and taking control of what follows in a manner of self-hypnosis.
One pateint, who had dreamt of being surrounded by sharks, transformed them into dolphins; another changed a chasing man into chocolate and ate him. The trick, said Harris, is to turn the nightmare into fun.
