Ruaawll Crowe - WHAT'S ON HIS MIND
Crowe coming to India
Hollywood star's date with India confirmed... but not the film with Sudipto Sen
Yes, it is true, Hollywood superstar Russell Crowe is coming to India, and he is set to arrive on June 27. But, not on a spiritual quest to refresh his body and mind after completing a gruelling shooting schedule, as has been reported by some media.
According to Crowe's agent, the visit is at the moment being kept out of public view. He just wants a quick vacation with his wife Danielle Spencer. But the Australian superstar of Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind is expected to meet Sudipto Sen, director of In Search Of Immortality, a film on a German writer's search for spirituality which takes him to the Kumbh Mela.
Sen, who is out of the country at present, admitted he will be back to meet Crowe and further discuss the project. If Crowe agrees to do the film, he will play the middle aged German writer who travels to the Kumbh Mela to attain moksha and falls in love with a 21-year-old Bengali girl. It is a bilingual film, to be made in Hindi and called Amrit Kumbh, and in English as In Search Of Immortality.
Though he is going to be here on a short visit and will probablyonly stick to north India, Crowe will observe the mannerisms of international tourists in the country, besides getting a first hand account of how holy places in India are and what the code of conduct at such places should be. There's also talk that Crowe might consider the rumour (that gained currency in Cannes last month) of teaming up with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for a Hollywood film.

News: Early Humans lived in The Savannas
Early humans lived in
the Savannas, not forests
Washington: Pre-humans living in East Africa 4.4 million years ago inhabited savannas, grassy plains dotted with trees and shrubs, according to a team of researchers.
This theory opposes another theory - that of Berkeley researcher Tim D While - who said that early humans occupied forests as their natural habitat. "Our team examined the data published by white and his colleagues last October and found that their data does not support their conclusion that Ardipithecus ramidus lived exclusively in woodlands and forest patches," said Naomi Levin of The Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.
The claim that the 4.4 million-year-old fossil nicknamed "Ardi" lived in woodlands and forest patches was used as an argument against a longstanding theory of human evolution known as the "savanna hypothesis." According to that premise, the expansion of savannas prompted our ape-like forebears to descend from trees and begin walking upright to find food more efficiently, or to reach other trees for resources or shelter.
Levin's team used the White team's data to draw very different conclusion about the environment inhabited by Ardi, an ape-like creature that stood about 4 feet tall and had a brain less than a quarter of the size of a modern day human.

Health Issue: A SHOT IN THE ARM
thwart breast cancer
Drug Hits Key Protein To Shrink
Tumours By 50%, Say Experts
London: In what's being claimed as a major breakthrough, scientists have developed a jab which they claim could cut breast cancer risk by 70%. An international team has developed the new drug which has been already successfully tested on rodents, and will be tried on humans next year.
According to the scientists, the jab works by boosting the immune system, which attacks a protein called the alpha-lactalbumin that occurs in most breat cancers. By destroying every trace of it, the tumours don't develop and existing ones are shrunk by up to half.
"We believe this will some day be used to prevent breast cancer in adult women in the same way that vaccines have prevented many childhood diseases. If it works in humans the way it works in mice, this will be monumental,"Vincent Tuohy, who created the vaccine, told the British newpapers.
Though it's is due to be tested in two trials next year but will not be on the market for at least a decade. Experts have welcomed the findings. Vincent Tuohy, of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, said: "We believe breast cancer is a completely preventable disease," Caitlin Palframan, from Breakthough Breast Cancer, said: "We look forward to seeing the results of large-scale clinical trials to find out if this vaccine would be safe and effective in humans."
In terms of developing a preventive vaccine, cancer presents problems not posed by viruses - while viruses are recognised as foreign invaders by the immune system, cancer is not, Cancer is an over -development of the body's own cells. Trying to vaccinate against this cell over-growth would effectively be vaccinating against the recipient's own body, destroying healthy tissue.

News: Sticky rice feeds Great Wall's in China
Sticky rice Great Wall's longevity
London: Scientists claim to have discovered the secret behind the strength and longevity of the Great Wall of China-sticky rice.
A team at Zhejiang University in China has found that the delicious "sweet rice" that is a mainstay of modern Asian cuisine was also a key ingredient in the mortar used to build the Great Wall 1,500 years ago.
Their study also found that construction workers in ancient China mixed sticky rice soup with slaked lime and limestone to create a paste that was ideal for filling in gaps between bricks and stone blocks.
The super-strong material was used to build the Great Wall, as well as quake-proof tombs, pagodas and city walls, some of which still exist today. say the scientists.
"Analytical study shows the ancient masonry mortar is a kind of special organic-inorganic composite material. The inorganic component is calcium carbonate, and the organic component is amylopectin, which comes from the sticky rice soup added to the mortar." said research leader Bingjian Zhang.
"Moreover, we found that amylopectin in the mortar acted as an inhibitor, the growth of the calcium carbonate crystal was produced, which should be the cause of the good performance of this kind of organic organic mortar," Bingjian was quoted by the British media as saying.
To determine whether sticky rice can aid in building repair, the scientists prepared lime mortars with varying, amounts of sticky rice and tested their performance compared to traditional lime mortar.
Bingjian said: "The test results of the modelling mortars shows that sticky rice-lime mortar has more stable physical properties, has greater mechanical strength, and is more compatible, which make it a suitable restoration mortar for ancient masonry," The findings have been published in the American Chemical Society journal.

Shruti Haasan - 'NOTE'WORTHY
Joining the
'band' wagon again!
Shruti Haasan has more reasons to be
excited this season...
A good year and a half after The Extramentals disbanded, the stunning Shruti Haasan is back again; this time with a new band and a new line-up of musicians. The singer rocked the city recently with a live wire performance, at the launch of a music entertainment channel, with her band and seemed absolutely thrilled about the rune her life is currently singing to.
"After The Extramentals disbanded because one of the founding members left, I didn't really get around forming another band for some reason or the other," says the pretty rockstar, "Sure, I continued to perform, but it was always a collaborative effort; So, what prompted her to finally get the cogs of her 'band' wagon into motion? "I have been working hard on a lot of material over the last couple of months, my own songs and composition. And I realised that I would need a proper band if the material was to come to fruition the way I wanted it to. And hey, what's a good singer without a good band?"
The band itself will feature musicians from the city, like Alok (keyboards), Naveen (bass), Vasanth (drums) and Bruce (Guitar), all Chennai based musicians, because as Shruti confesses, "Somehow, i find that as far as making music goes, my loyalties lie with Chennai musicians. This is an extremely exciting venture for me - both as singer and songwriter. We will play alternative rock music, with a lot of jazz and pop influences thrown in, it'll be easy listening, happy music." The band, which goes by the name Shruti at present, is all set to perform on a regular basis from now on (in fact, show have already been lined up in Hyderabad and Calcutta) using predominantly their own compositions as Shruti firmly believes in promoting original material.
Meanwhile, the stunner might have achieved a lot in so little time but she will relishes the smaller moments and achievements in life. What's her latest achievement? "Its' silly to talk about it, but I learned to ride a scooter recently." she smiles, "I was apprehensive at first but once I got on the bike, it was pretty easy." But with her edgy biker-babe persona, does she see herself riding meaner machines sometime in the future? "While I am not really a speed freak, I absolutely love motorbikes,"admits the actress, whose movie with Suriya is scheduled to begin in June, "I have ridden a bike once before and,, who knows, may be one day I might just mount a chopper!"
