NOT MY LUCK: Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan in trouble again

It may have been her birthday, but the Just My Luck star, luck just doesn't seem to be favouring her. For the second night in a row, Lindsay Lohan was out to celebrate the day, but found herself in the midst of yet another disturbance.

MONEY MATTERS: Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan.

Akshay's an emotional fool

Akshay Kumar has a huge fan in filmmaker Priyadarshan. Though most people seem to think that Akshay is mercenary and only talks money, according to Priyan, who has done six films with Akki, he is a gem. Reason? There was an occasion when a producer was having trouble with his funds. "Akshay was yet to receive a big part of his remuneration. When I relaised that the producer  was facing a money crunch. I asked Akki to let go of the rest of his remuneration. And he did so without a moment's hesitation. I hold Akshay in high esteem because of this one incident," says the director, "Honestly, who lets go of money without even a single question asked?"

FILM BY Knight and Day

CRUISE AND DIAZ IN A SEXY AVATAR

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz's arresting persona would be reason enough to watch Star studios' Knight and Day. The pair is a visual delight on screen and will be seen in a new, sexy shirtless Tom after a long hiatus. Even at 48. Tom can give the youth a run for their money. He looks robost and fit incidentally, in his 1988 romance flick Cocktall. Tom took off his shirt in Jamaica on the same beach where one of the Knight and Day Scenes are shot!
Director James Mangold explains, "Tom Cruise is an American movie icon and that quality really set the tone, inspiring us to embrace a lot of ?American designers and design ideas in the film. I also looked back at cool American stars like Steve McQueenand Paul Newman. We didn't want to repeat a look that Tom has done before, and thus wanted to create something fresh and new."
To add to the hotness quotient, Knight and Day"also showcases Cameron Diaz as a beautiful and glamorous woman. Cameron, 37, has one of the most enviable bodies in Hollywood and her bikini scene in Knight and Day leaves little to the imagination.
A look for which she admits she worked out rigorously to look as fit and shapely as she does. Her costumes too are inspired by the many twists and turns taking place throughout the film. Playing a woman on the run, she is seen going through constant costume changes, somuch so that her clothes became part of the comedy and fun of the story.
Given their versatile versatile performances and impeccable sense of fashion, it is no wonder that both Cruise and Cameron figure on the Top 10 Hollywood Stars list. And their fresh, striking looks in Knigh and Day will definitely set the screens on fire!

GOOD GOING: Simbu

SIMBU'S NEXT?

Simbu seems to have become extra cautious about his choice of projects after his lover boy role in Gautham Vasudev Menon's Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa came in for much praise.
The latest we herar is that the actor recently did a photo shoot for the Tamil remake of Krish's critically-acclaimed released last month. Vedan had Allu Arjun, Anushka and Manoj Manchu in the lead.
looks like Simbu is going to don the role of Cable Raju that Allu Arjun played to perfection in the original. Rumours are rife that Simbu signed the project as he likes Anushka, who did the original. But according to sources, Anushka is not very keen on the remake and hence, the makers are trying to rope in Tapasee of Aadukalam fame for the role of the commercial sex-worker in the film. Producer RB Choudhry's son Jithan Ramesh is producing the film

A NEW AVATAR: Shammu

The
glan route
Actress Shammu is all set to go glam in her forthcoming projects...

She might have started with a blink-and-miss role in her maiden venture Dasavatharam, but things took a different turn for Shammu after her debut vehicle, The pretty young thing bounced back with the critically acclaimed Kanchivaram, in which she played Prakash Raj's daughter to perfection. And before she could believe it, she had already signed an array of projects like Malayam, Maathi Yosi, Nellu and Mayilu. Now, after a string of films, in which she played homely characters, Shammu has decided to come out of the shell and shed her girl-next-door image,.Yes, the lovely lady is all set to go glam in her future projects.
So, why did she make this decision? "The reason is simple. After Kanchivaram. I was stereotyped as a homely girl and a village belle, I didn't want to get stuck with a particular image.I'm a modern girl in real life. but it's an irony that I never really had the opportunity to play one on screen. Unless I do not experiment with my roles, there is a big risk of being branded with a particular tag. And I do not want to fall into the trap." she sayd matter of factly.
Kanchivarm and Mayilu prove her talent as an actress? "Of course yes! Taking the glam route doesn't mean that I will not do homely characters again. For instance, in my forthcoming film Nellu. I play a college student who is from a rich and arrogant family. But in Mayilu  I play a village belle who falls in love with a Kodangi. The film is set in a village backdrop. These roles are quite challenging and I do wnat to take up such assignments once in a while, I'm now eagerly awaiting the release of both the films."
The actress also adds that she is open to playing characters with a grey shade." My dream character is to play something on the times of Lara croft in Tumb Raider, in fact, Angelina Jolie has been a huge inspiration for me to take the plunge into unset town."
The actress will soon test waters in the Telugu and Malayalam industry too. "I understand and speak Telugu and I'm how learning Malayalam. Once I brush up my language skills, I will take the plunge into T-town and M-town And after that, the big destination is Bollywood." signs off the actress.

Health Issue: SHORT CUTS

SHORT CUTS:

'Virtual food may help
treat eating disorders'
Scientists have found that food presented in a virual reality environment causes the same emotional response as real food, a evaluation and treatment of eating disorders. Experts believe the technique, which allows one to pretend as if eating in a computer generated restaurant, could reduce the fear for food among people suffering from of food causes major anxiety to those patients, but the researchers said the new technique could help reverse their unhealthy relationship with food to the point where they can eventually be reintroduced to the real thing. The virutual reality (VR) experience was found to be much stronger than just showing the patients photographs.

Good looks make for an extrovert?
If you are am attractive man or a woman, chances are that you are quite an extrovert, Evolutionary psychologist Aaron Lukaszewski of the University of California at Santa Barbara asked 85 male and 89 female students to rate their own attractiveness relative to their peers. The results showed that stronger and more attractive men, and more attractive women, were more extrovert. And because strength and attrativeness have a strong genetic basis, it appears that we may learn our personalities, and adjust them to situations we find ourselves inover time. "It's not the way psychologists have typically thought about personality," Wendy Johnson, a psychologist at the University of Edinburgh, UK. Said.

Antioxidants keep arteries healthy:
Dietary antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E, if taken as supplements over a long period of time, keep arteries healthy and supple in patients who drink and smoke, says a study. Antioxidants protect cells from the attacks of free radicals - moleculed reponsible for aging and tissue damage. Researchers reported these positive results in a randomised controlled trial of combined vitamin C,Vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and selenium capsules. "Antioxidant supplementation significantly increased large and small artery elasticity in patients with multiple cardiovascular risk (smking and drinking) factors," said Reuven Zimlichman of the Wolfson Medical Centre, Israel.

News: New Genetic Test

New genetic test can pinpoint rural
roots down to last few km

London: Believe it or not, a new genetic test could soon enable people to discover the exact origins of their family to within a few kilometres, sy researchers.

A European team, led by University of Edinburgh, has carried out a research and found DNA analysis can accurately predict the origins of rural people to within 8km of their family's home, the 'Daily Mail' reported.
The findings suggest it may eventually be possible to work out the rural roots of city dwellers who have ancestors from different parts of the same country, the researchers say, The Edinburgh researchers, working with scientists in Italy and Croatia, tested whether the same analysis could be used to distinguish between people from the same country who were separated only by short distances.
The team, led by Jim Wilson, studied the genes of people whose four grand parents came from the same village in Scotland, Croatia or Italy None of the volunteers were related to each other. The results showed by studying genetic differences, it was possible to distinguish between individuals who live in villages that are only  8km apart.
The researchers predicted the correct village of origin for everyone involved in the Italian study, 96% of the Scottish sample and 89% of people in the Croatian sample. They concluded that the pattern could be explained by the fact that, long ago, people tended to marry within their own community. After many generations. the different villaged developed their genetic fingerprint, which can be picked up.
Lead researcher Wilson said, "it was quite surprising and quite exciting because we've known for a number of years that you can use the variation that people have in their DNA to tell whether they're African or East Asian or Native American - people sho come from different continents."

Health Issue: High Risk of STDs

Men who pop Viagra at high risk of STDs

Washington: Men who take eretile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra are more likely to become infected with sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS, US researchers reported.

This infection rate was higher even in the year before the men got their prescriptions filled, which suggests the risky behavior came first, the researchrs reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The study shows that even middle aged men need advice about spreading and catching STDs, especially AIDS, which is deadly and incurable, Anupam Jena of Harvard Medical School in Boston and colleagues wrote.
"Users of ED (erectile dysfunction) drugs had higher rates of HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in the 12 months before filling their first ED drug prescription, although only HIV and chlamydia were statistically significant in this period," Jena's team wrote.
"At a minimum, use of ED drugs seems to correlate with higher risk sexual behavior, either in the number or type of sexual encounters."
As many as 40% of men aged 57 to 85 have some degree of erectile dysfunction, editors of the journal wrote in a summary of the findings.

Health Issue: About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer: Therapy slows tumour growth

London: Scientists have developed a new therapy which they claim could significantly slow tumour growth in patients with advanced breast cancer.

An international study has found that the therapy, designed to attack tumours in patients with a genetic mutation in either BRCA1 or BRCA2, slowed tumour growth in 85% of advanced breast cancer patients, :ancet journal reported.
The new agent, olaparth, inhibits a protein called PARP Both PARP and the BRCA proteins are involved in DNA repair. And while cells seem to be able to do without one or the other, inhibiting PARP in a tumour that lacks a BRCA gene causes them to die. "If you put too much stress on the cancer cell, it can'tlake it and it falls apart." said lead author Susan Domehek of University of Pennsylvania.

News: Socckets: Ball can charge a cellphone

Socckets: Ball that can charge a cellphone

London: A football that generates electricity to charge a cellphone or power a light from a short kick is set for trial at the 2010 FIFA World Cup host South Africa.

Four female undergraduate students, from Harvard University, who wanted to find a solution to the developing world's chronic power shortages, designed the ball named sOcckets. The ball works by a 'shake to charge' torch, in which a magnetic ball rolls through a coil to generate an electric charge.
The ball generates enough electricity to power an LED light for three hours in just 15 minutes of being kicked around. "Soccer is something you well find in every African country," one of sOccket's inventors, Jessica Lin, said. "People play for hours days, so we thought, 'Why not try to get a little more out of that energy," she added.
Lin said the main motive was to withhold the passion for football among children in Africa's poorest communities to provide them with reading torches when the light fades.

Health Issue: TIMELY WARNING FOR BLOOD TEST

Blood test that can detect Alzheimer's
10 yrs before onset

London: Coming soon: A simple bolld test which could predict Alzheimer's disease up to 10 years before symptoms appear, say scientists.

A British team is developing such a test after the scientists discovered that high levels of a protein can be an early sign of the condition, which they claim would allow much earlier prescription of treatments. In fact, the scientists at King's College London, started working on the test after they found that veryhigh levels of blood protein clusterin increase years before the first symptoms of A;zheimer's, the Daily Mail reported.
The protein may be linked with more rapid and severe memory loss, they say. The more cluster in there is, the more the brain shrinks and the more forgetful someone becomes. Lead scientist Madhav Thambisetty said, "A primary goal in Alzheimer's research is to develop an inexpensive, easily administered test to accorately detect and track the progression of this devastating disease. Identifying cluster in as a blood biomarker that may be relevant to both the pathology and symptoms of the disease may bring us closer to this goal."
Co-scientist Simon Lovestone said the test would be "ascheap as chips" He says it can be given to adults with a family history of the desease, as well as those with diabetes or other conditions that increase chances of it. The new test, described in Archives of General Psychiatry, which would be used in conjunction with existing diagnostic techniques, could help doctors distinguish normal memory lapses from early stages of dementia.
