HEalth Issue: Circadian rhythms can lead to diabetes.

Disruption in body clock genes could pave the way to diabetes

London: A new animal study has shown that disruption of two genes that control circadian rhythms can lead to diabetes. Circadian rhythms are cyclical patterns in biological activities, such as sleeping, eating, body temperature and hormone production.

"These results indicate that ddisruption of the daily clock may contribute to diabetes by impairing the pancreas' ability to deliver insulin," said Dr Joseph Takahashi, investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and co-senior author of the study.

HEalth Issue: Nestle's Boost kid Essentials drink

Nestle' drink to drop health benefit claims

According to a recent Nestle' ad campaign aimed at parents, a drink called Boost kd Essentials was so good for children tht it could keep them from getting colds and missing school.
But on Wednesday, the Federa Trade Commission said the ads were deceptive and announced that Nestle had agreed to stop making the claims. The move was aimed at deceptive advertising by a major food manufacturer for products meant for children. A commission official said that the agency was taking a close look at the proliferating number of health claims made for all types of products on supermarket shelves.
"Food companies are marketing more of what they call functional foods," said Karen Mandel, a staff lawyer for the trade commission. "If the claims are not substantlated, that's what we're looking for. to make sure the claims are truthful," Mandel said. The action on Wednesday involved Boost Kid Essentials, a nutrient-laden beverage made by Nestle HealthCare Nutrition that comes with a straw containing probiotic bacteria, which is similar to the live cultures in yogurt. Many people say theybelieve that probiotic bacteria aid digestion and provide other benefits.
According to the commission, the television and magazine ads and the website and packaging for Boost Kid Essentials made a series of claims that the probiotics in the straw could strengthen children's immune systems, protecting them from colds and diarrhea and keeping them from missing school. But the commission said there was not enough scientific evidence to back up the claims.

Health Issue: Salt and Sodium chloride in food can lower the risk of...

Low salt intake prevents heart problems too

Washington: Restricting the amount of salt or sodium chloride in food can lower the risk of cariovascular morbidities, concluded researchers.

Dieter Klaus and colleagues said that people whose intake of dietary sodium chloride is in excess of 6 gms pe day increase their risk of cardiovascular morbidities and hypertension. This is particularly notable in view of the fact that in the Western industrialised nations, one in two deaths is due to a cardiovascular disorder and the average intake of sodium chloride is in the range of 8 to 12 gms per day.
Salt restriction may not only help to prevent cardiovascular morbidities but may also counteract other lifestyle diseases such as obesity and diabetes. As a preventive measure, the authors suggest reducing dietary salt intake.
By successively lowering the NaC1 content of industrially processed foods by 40% to 50% people's daily salt intake would be lowered to 5 to 6 gms per day per head of population.
One of the best ways to reduce salt intake is to cut back on heavily processed and prepared foods. Hot dogs, sausages, ham, and prepackaged delimeats usually contain much more salt than freshly sliced lean meats, such as chicken fis. Most canned vegetable also have a much higher salt content than the same vegetable found in the fresh produce section. Frozen prepared meeals should be avoided.

Health Issue: Drink too much black tea can cause bone problem

Drinking too much of black tea can cause bone problem
Washington: A new research by Medical College of Georginhas shown that black tea contains higher concentration of fluoride than previously thought.

"The additional fluoride from drinking two to four cups osf tea a day won't harm anyone; it's the very heavy tea drinkers who could get in frouble," said Dr Gary Whitford, Regents Professor of oral biology in the School of Dentistry. Most published reports show 1 to 5 millingrams of fluoride per litre of black tea, but a new study shows that number could be as high as 9 milligrams.
Fluride is known to help prevent dental cavities, but long-term ingestion of excessive amouts could cause bone problems. Whitford discovered that the fluoride concentration in black tea had long been understimated when he began analysing data from four patients with advanced skeletal fluorosis, a disease caused by excessive fluoride consumption and characterised by joint and bone pain and damage.
"When we tested the patients' tea brands using a traditional method, we found the fluoride concentrations to be very low, so we wondered if that method was detecting all of the fluoride," Whitford said, noting that the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, creates a quandary when measuring fluoride.

Health Issue: Diabetes QUICK FIX 4-in-1 diet

Now, a 4-in-1 diet drug to tackle obesity, diabetes

London: Bhere's some good news for those looking for a "quick-fix" to shed flab - scientists claim to have developed a "four-in-one" diet drug which reduces weight, apart from controlling blood pressure, cholesterol levels and even preventing diabetes, particularly in obese.
The jab, liraglutide has a "feel good"factor - similar in structure to a gut hourmone that helps regulate appetite, it tricks brain into thinking people are full despite eating 20% less food, the Daily Mail' reported.
The scientists tested liraglutide on over 550 obese men and women. Those who took liraglutide lost a stone and a half over six months - more than twice as muc as those on dummy drugs. When they took the drug for another 18 months, the weight stayed off. The benefits of liraglutide, which like insulin comes in sure levels dropped to such an extent that patients could throw awaythe drugs they were taking to keep it under control.

News: Secreat of Mona lisa

French scientists crack secrets of Mona Lisa

Paris: The enigmatic smile remains a mystery, but French scientists say they have cracked a few secrets of the "Mona Lisa."

French researchers studied seven of the Louvre Museum's Leonardo da Vinci paintings, including the "Mona Lisa", to analyze the master's use of successive ultrathin layers of paint and glaze - a technique that gave his works their dreamy quality. Specialists from the Center for Research and restorationof the Museums of France found that da Vinci painted up to 30 layers of paint on his works to meet his standards of subtlety. Added up, all the layers are less than 40 micrometers, or about half the thickness of a human hair, researcher Philippe Walter said on Friday. The technique, called "sfumato," allowed da Vinci to give outlines and contours a hazy quality and create an illusion of depthe and shadow. His use of the technique is well-known, but scientific study on it has been limited because tests often required samples from the paintings.
The french researchers used a noninvasive technique called X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to study the paint layers and their chemical composition. They brought their specially developed high-tech tool into the museum when it was closed and studied the portraits' faces, which are emblematic of sfumato. The project was developed in collaboration with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble. The tool is so precise that "now we can find out the mix of pigments used by the artist for each coat of paint." Waller told the Associated Press. "And that's very, very important for understanding the technique."
the analysis of the various paintings also shows da Vinci was constantly trying out new methods, Walter said, in the "Mona Lisa," da Vinci used manganese oxide in his shadings, In others, he used copper Often he used glazes, but not always. The results were published Wednesday in Angewandte Chemie International Edition , a chemistry journal. Traditions holds that the "Mona Lisa" is a painting of Lisa Cherardinl, wife of florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo, and that da Vinci started painting it in 1503.

Health Issue: Paralysed leg using robotic legs

Robotic legs put paralysed back on their feet

Wellington: Two New Zealand inventors have produced what they claim are the world's first robotic legs to help paraplegics walk again.

The bionic legs were road tested publicly for the first time by 23-year-old Hayden allen who was told five years ago he would never walk again after being paralysed from the chest down in a motorcycle accident. Allen said the experience of being able to stand up and walk when strapped into his robotic legs was fantastic and he felt like a normal buman being again. "It will be a big benefit from a social aspect, being able to talk to someone at the same eye level," he told reports.
Inventors Richard Little and "robert Irving, two ex-patriate Scottish engineers, came up with the idea seven years ago and have spent $7.1 million developing it, Called Rex (robotic exoskeleton) the 38kg joy-stick operated legs were inspired by the movie 'Aliens' in which the character Ripley(Sigourney Weaver) climbs into a robotic exo0skeleton to fight an alien.
Rex is "a realistic standing and walking alternative to wheelchairs," the inventors said on their website Rexbionics.com "It enables the user to climb up and down stairs, sit, stand, and step backwards, sideways and forwards - providing the opportunity for people in wheelchairs who want to walk, to do just that."
However, Rex comes with a hefty price tag of 150,000 US dollars and at present is only available in New Zealand although the inventors said it would be sold worldwide from next year.
Rex Bionics believes demand will outstrip supply for the next few years.
