Health Issue: Anaesthesia

Anaesthesia makes
patients anxious

London: Eighty-five percent of patents who took part in a survey shortly after day surgery admitted to being anxious about receiving a general anaesthetic.

Seventeen percent of respondents said they were very or extremely anxious, 22% said they were quite anxious, 46% said they were a little anxious and 15% experienced no anxiety at all. Key concerns included dying while asleep, not waking up after surgery, waking up during surgery and anxiety while waiting to go into surgery or arriving at the theater door.
"Our survey underlines the importance of patients receiving planned and timely information about anaesthesia, prior to the day of surgery, in order to limit their anxiety," said Mark Mitchell, senior lecturer in the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of Salford in Britian. "This should include information about how anaesthesia is managed, the notion of carefully controlled and supervised anesthesia and dispelling misconceptions associated with general anaesthesia."
Patients scheduled for elective surgery in three day surgery units in England were invited to take part in the survey and 460 patients - a response rate of 37% - completed the questionnaire within 24 to 48 hours of surgery. The patients who took part were aged between 18 and 75, with an average age of 46, and 59% were female.

Health Issue: Mother's Milk Benefits

Mother's Milk Benefits Kids'
genes, boosts immunity

Washington: Giving reasons why mother's milk is always better than any formula, scientists have claimed that breast milk improves the functioning of their genes in a way that protects them from illness.

Researchers at the University of Illinois have found that infants' first food affects their gene expression, giving a possible mechanism for how breast milk impacts health, Gene expression is the process by which instructions in a gene are used to synthesise a functional gene product, mostly proteins. When genes are expressed, it is as if they are "turned on".
Lead researcher Sharon Donovan of the University of Illinois said that it has already been known that breast milk contains immune -- protective components that make a breastfed infant's risk lower for all kinds of illnesses.
"But what we haven't known is how breast milk protects the infants and how it regulates the development of the intestine," she said, adding that understanding those differences could help formula makers develop a product that is more like the real thing, "Genes are really sensitive to nutrition. And we now have genes that may explain many of the clinical observations of how breast-fed infants differ," she said.
Using a novel non-invasive technique for their study, the researchers compared 10 three-month-old formula - fed babies with 12 breast-fed infants of the same age. Capitalising on the natural sloughing off of intestinal cells during digestion, they looked for signs of gene expression, in the form of messenger RNA, in the babies' poop.
Breast milk and formula have different effects on at least 146 genes, the researchers found. According to Donovan, most of the genes enhanced by breast milk promote quick development of the intestine and immune system. Some of the genes positively affected by breast milk protect against "leaky gut", a disorder in which foreign particles enter the blood stream through the intestinal wall, she said.

Barbara Mori - FLYING HIGH

'I'm disappointed'
BARBARA MORI RETURNS HOME AFTER FLYING HIGH IN INDIA....
Barbara Mori is leaving our shores a disappointed woman. The sexy latino actress, back in India for the second time in a month and  probably the last time now, feels let down on two counts. One, of course, is the unfavourable public response to her much-awaited film with Hrithik Roshan this weekend; and, the second, is that her dream of visiting the Taj Mahal remains unfulfilled.
Hours after the negative feedback for Kites began rolling in, Barbara pretended to be oblivious of what critics and audiences had to say. She also appeared unaware that the screening of the film had been stopped in Bangalore. For when we asked her where she was going as part of the promotional tour, Barbara mentioned Bangalore along with Delhi and Kolkata.
Friday afternoon, the actress spent visiting multiplexes and theatres across Mumbai to interact with fans. But while the fall in the excetement level was palpable (Kites was one of the most hyped films of all time in Bollywood), Barbara said unconcernedly, 'I'm really excited, i'm waiting for the Indian people's response. The premiere in New York and London was amazing. There were hordes of Indians screaming for Hrithik and me. Let's see how people here love it."
The 'people here' haven't loved the film too much. And when informed tht the response to it has been sluggish and at best mixed, Barbara's feisty Latin blood boiled in heated defence. "It's a little different from Bolywood films. Kites has got a lot of Hollywood mixed with Mexican culture, packaged in Bollywood. It's a different experience," she argued.
True, but then the language in the film is an uncomfortable challenge for audiences. It's 90 per cent in Spanish and English, with subtitles in Hindi, and Indian audiences aren't used to reading subtitles. Somewhat angrily now, Barbara replied, "The problem IS what the film is about Kites is about two people who cannot understand each other,. She's from Mexico and doesn't speak English. He's from India and he doesn't speak Spanish. And they fall in love.My brother thinks it is my best film to date. Friends in New York enjoyedit too."
Maybe, but Indian audiences are reportedly dissatisfied with Rakesh Roshan's product. And Barbara now heads for Venezuela to star in her next film. "And then, I'm back home in Mexico to produce a play which I'll be acting in. I really like being on stage," the actress said.
As for the Taj Mahal, she's hoping to be back in India afor another film next year "and then I'll see the Taj Mahal". But just why the Roshans who played host and dost to her couldn't arrange a trip for their Mexican guest to the monument of love is beyond comprehension.
