Ranbir Kapoor - MUCH IN DEMAND, LOST? Shahid Kapoor, ALL SMILES: Abhishek Bachchan

Monday, May 3, 2010

Give me my
   director back!

It is not only the women in Bollywood who are following Ranbir Kapoor's life closely.
Trade sources say that Abhishek Bachchan and Shahid Kapoor are also keenly observing this young actor. Abhishek has lost his director Mani Ratnam to Ranbir, and Shahid has lost his director Imtiaz Ali to RK Junior.
Naturally, both, Abhi and Shasha are "Just a wee bit jealous" of Ranbir. Can't blame them. Abhishek has done his best work (Yuva, Guru and now the much-awaited Raavan) with Mani, and Shahid has done one of his biggest hits (Jab We Met) with Imtiaz.
Under the circumstances to lose one's hit directors isn't something actors take lightly!

Meghna Naidu - DANCE WITH ME

DIZZYING
DANCE
MOVES

Sizziling sensation Meghna Naidu is in the news again. This time, it is for a raunchy number that features in the film Puli Vesham, starring RK and Sadaa.
Sources close to the film's unit say that the actress looks stunning in the song, which has been choreographed by Nakka Mukka fame Sridhar. But what has triggered considerable interest in the song in the industry circles is the fact that the actress actually fainted a couple of times while shooting for it.
Says a source close to the unit, "The song was recently shot on a grand set erected at a cost of Rs.20 lakh. For the first time in the history of Tamil film industry, a song  has been shot on a set erected with empty bottles. The number is so fast paced that the actress had a tough time keeping pace with the beat. In fact, she fainted a couple of times due to exhaustion. However, her efforts will not be in vain as this song will certainly become as popular as Nakka Mukka..."
Art director GK, who erected the set too agrees. Says he, "It wasn't easy setting up a bar full of bottles. First, we had to collect bottles for an entire week. We then had to tie all the bottles witha rope and then paste them on the walls."
Sridhar says, "Meghna might have fainted while dancing, but we are sure that the audience will faint when they get to watch the song."

Jiah Khan - GROWING UP

JIAH KHAN
BURNS IT UP

Jiah Khan, that petite bundle, who arrived in Bollywood as a screen seductress with Ram Gopal Varma's Nishabd, has moved back to London to live with her mother and sisters, say industry sources. However, Jiah is currently visiting Mumbai to promote her latest film.
Incidentally, Jiah, who in earlier rounds was usually dressed in short numbers, came to the preview of her film with buddy Deepika Padukone. One noticed that not only was she demurely dressed, but she also conducted jherself very gracefully, speaking only when she was spokento. Though Jiah sizzled leaving little to the imagination on screen, it almost seems like Seeta aur Geeta -- demure in real life and brazen on screen!

HEALTH ISSUE : SHORT CUTS

Check blood pressure at
home, not doc's clinic

Think you need to go to the doctor's office to check your blood pressure? Think again: The best way to predict your risk of stroke or heart attack due to high blood pressure is through systematic monitoring at home rather than periodic checks in the doctor's office, new research suggests. "With home blood pressure monitoring you get a greater number of measurements and there is no white-coat effect," lead author Teemu Nilranen at Finland's National institute of Health and Welfare said, speaking of the tendency for anxiety to drive up blood pressure. "The patient is more relaxed and this provides blood pressure values that reflect the patient's true blood pressure better."

ROllercoaster rides can damage ear:

The sharp turns, ups and downs, and high speeds of today's rollercoasters could cause damage to your ears, say physicians at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. The study offers the first reported link between the force of acceleration in rollercoasters and a common ear injury -- ear barotrauma. In its extreme, ear barotrauma can lead to temporary hearing loss, and most commonly causes dizziness, ear discomfort or pain, or a sensation of having the ears "pop."

10 hours of sleep the key to live till 100?

Want to live to 100? Well, then get 10 hours of sleep a night, suggests a new study. Sleep is a major factor in rejuvenating the body and activating the immune system. In the study, boffins found that people who reach 100 are three times more likely to spend at least 10 hours a night in bed, Danan Gu of Portland State University said that human cells regenerate in sleep, which also removes toxins and activates immune system cells.

HEALTH ISSUE: 'Miracle dust'

'Miracle dust' can save injured
limbs from amputation

The powder, made from pig bladders, can repair limbs in weeks, The Pentagon is investing million of dollars in the research, hoping that it will be possible to grow entire limbs

London: Scientists have developed a "miracle" powder nicknamed 'pixie dust' which they claim is being used to successfully treat the limbs of slodiers injured in Afghanistan.
A team at the Centre of Regenerative Medicine in Pittsburgh has made the power out of pig bladders. It helps the body grow hew tissue and can regenerate large areas which have been destroyed. Pig bladders contain a substance called extra cellular matrix, which is made up largely of collagen.
Plastic surgeon Steve Wolf, chief of clinical trials at the American Army's Institute for Surgical Research in Texas, has used the "Pixie dust" to treat several soldiers whose limbs were so badly damaged that they would ordinarily have been amputated.
One of the first to be treated was 25-year-old marine Corporal Isaias Hernandez, whose leg was so severely damaged by a mortar round that amputation seemed likely. A devastating crater-like wound in his thigh went sown to the bone, with a huge amount of muscle and tissue blown away.
Wolf operated upon him, placing sheets made of the cellular matrix into the wound. Over several weeks new tissue formed -- until the wound was filled. The "Pixie dust" had helped create new tissue, including nerves and muscle, and Corporal Hernandez can now walk on the leg.
He said: "Within a few weeks of the operation I was doing things I hadn't done for months. It was so quick that you could almost see it growing and filling the hole where I was blasted. The extra cellular membrance has not only made muscle but also built nerves."
The Pentagon is investing millions of dollars in the research, hoping that it will be possible to grow entire limbs "We're some way off from that but that would be our eventual aim," Wolf said.

SA RAINA - ED OUT
Left - Hander's 101 Helps India
Ease into Super-Eight Stage

St Lucia: For Suresh Raina, it might all be feeling like a pleasant deja vu.Just a week back, back home on an electric Sunday evening, he rode on mishits, dropped catches and more than an element of chance to help Chennai Super Kings to their first IPL trophy.
Today,on an equally stimulating though hot Sunday morning, he invoked the same script to give India a commanding 14-run victory. He smashed an exhilarating 101, including a jaw dropping 82 off his last 38 deliveries, to take his side all the way to an impregnable 186 for five.
With two back-to-back wins, India have scaled to the top of Group C and will be counted as the overwhelming favorites too from here on. Thankfully, they have a clean four-day break before they return to action: They will face Australia next, unless Bangladesh mange to pull off an upset win.
South Africa won the toss and expectedly inserted India in: with a string of pacers at their disposal and a cool breeze flowing across the ground, they would have eyed the early morning juice in the wicket thirstily. M Vijay, Saturday's fireworks not with standing, was edged out for a first-ball duck.
He was probably disoriented by the mix-up on the previous delivery with his city-mate Dinesh Karthik. As the ball darted around and jumped disconcertingly, India struggled to stay abreast with the ideal run-rate. By the eighth over, they were just 43 for two.
But Raina was already looking to get6 into damage inducting mode: he started slashing at anything short and flashing at everything within his range. He had already earned a second life.holding out to mid-off when he was barely 5. It was of course,a no-ball, and probably an augury that it was going to be his day.
His big hits uncannily fell short of fielders in the deep: the bigger ones sailed over them for sixes. The assault really began in the ninth over itself, When Graeme Smith turned to his spinner: vander Merwe. He went for barely 13 runs but the floodgates had opened.
Yuvraj Singh, in the meantime, was slowly getting into his groove: a pull and a typical flick for six announced his return to form. He made just 37 runs, including three 4s and two 6s, but India had already picked up steam. At 120 for three, with four overs still to go, the stage was set for the final onslaught.
Raina, 55, picked up the cue perfectly: a sequence of 4,4,4,6 in the 18th over all but broke SA's spirits. It fetched 25 runs and India were on their way to a winning total, and eventually victory too.
India opened the attack with Harbhajan Singh: it was a mixed over, with a dropped catch followed by 4. But soon, it became pretty clear that South Africa would have to exert themselves for every run, for every boundary.
Dhoni rotated his bowlers rapidly, giving not more that two overs at a stretch to any one; he also relied more on spin, inviting South Africa to go over the field. They tried but couldn't go faster than 25 for 1 after five overs and 57 in 10. but as long as Kallis was in the middle, and they had wickets in the pavilion, India couldn't afford to relax.
As expected, the fours and sixes started flowing after the halfway mark.Kallis kept galloping on but he just couldn't keep pace with the run-rate: the heat was also a visible factor and he had to resign to his team's fate in the 17th over, after making 73.
AB de Villers and Albie Morkel continued the fight though, conjuring the big hits. Nihra, however, bowled a sharp 8-run over to keep the match in control. In the end. South Africa needed 24 runs off the last over: it was beyond them.

CHAMPIONS STAVE OFF BANGLA
Ashraful's Effort In Vain As Pakistan Clinch 21-Run Victory

Gros Islet: Defending champions Pakistan were given a fright by Bangladesh before stumbling to a 21-run win in a Group A match of the World Twenty20 here on Sunday.
Chasing Pakistan's 172 for three, Bangladesh were quick to lose both their perners Imrul Kayes and Tamim Iqbal before a 91-run stand between Mohammad Ashraful (65) and Shakib Al Hasan (47) resurrected their hopes.
However, the fall of Shakib off Twenty20 international debutant Mohammad Sami, who took two wickets in the 16th over, drew curtains on the Bangladesh's hopes of creating an upset and they were stopped at 151 for seven.
Sami, who was picked in place of an experienced Mohammad Asif for the match, showed heart to recover from a nervy start to end with three wickets for 29.
The start of Bangladeshi innings threatened to make it a stroll in the park for Pakistan but Ashraful and Shakib joined forces to put up a fight.
The two mixed caution with aggression as they slowly built the Bangladishi innings and came heavily on slow bowlers especially Mohammad Hafeez (1-26) and Shakid Afridi (0.37).
Shakib's two towering sixes off Hafeez in the 14th over left Bangladesh needing just 59 runs off 36 balls. But their uopes were cut short when shakib lofted a drive off Sami in the very next over, only to be caught by Umar Akmal at the long off.
Shakib' innings came off 34 balls and featured three fours and two sixes, Mahmudullah, who came next, became Sami's second victim in the same over and when Ashraful was caught behind by Mohammad Aamer in 18th over.it was all but over for Bangladesh. Ashraful's knock came in 49 balls with four fours and three sixes.
Earlier, Pakistan deciding to bat, were given a solid start by their openers Kamran Akmal (73) and Saman Butt (73) who put up a 142 run stand.
The two tore apart the Bangladeshi attack and it wasn't till the 16th over when Akmal departed that there was an over that did not go for a boundary, Akmal struck eight fours and a six in his 55 balls innings.
Butt, whose ability to play in the Twenty20 format was always questioned, played with purpose, his innings coming in 46 balls with eight fours and two sixes. Shakib was the pick of Bangladeshi bowlers finishing with figures of 2-27 from hi four overs.

John Abraham: POPULARITY ON THE RISE

The scent of
    John Abraham

Three of John Abraham's movies are in the cans for some reason or the other. However, the actor's launched a couple of deodorants at a city hotel few nights ago, hell broke loose! The media turned up in droves to corner John and get sound bytes from him. and you'll never believe what happened after that. The actor had to be escorted to the safety of a hotel room (usually hell breaks loose when Bipasha Basu is around, doesn't it?) because of the tizzy he caused.
Even at the media desk, pandemonium reigned. Samples of the fragrances that John launched were being distributed and once again, those who couldn't get hold of John wanted to at least get their hands on the product he launched.
Press people were screaming, shouting and nearly trampled upon. If this is the measure of John's popularity.then producers should try and get his movies out of the cans and infuse life into them!

A Still From Ivar

Friendship matters

The audio of Ivar, produced by A G Raja and directed by his friend, debutant N Priyan, was launched recently without much pomp and celebration. "We believe that quality of work is important. Publicity comes only after that," said a source close to the unit.
Talking to CT, Raja said, "There are many highlights in Ivar, For instance, the album, which has music by Kavi Periathambi, an RJ and a close friend of mine, doesn't have any duet. Also the songs are all sung by male singers, We have shot the film as realistically as possible. There are no dancers dancing in the background or stunt men beating each other."
The movie is about four friends who don't care about the past or the future. They live for the day. "But their life turns topsyturvy after a particular stay together and face the crisis forms the rest of the story,"  Raja added.
While Vijay Anand, Ila, Perarasan and Hussain play the male leads, Athulya from Kerala makes her debut as the heroine.
"Interestingly, almost all the technicians in the film are my friends. I wanted to give them a break," said Raja,"We are getting ready to show the film to the censor board. I'm sure the will like it." Ivar is likely to hit the screens by the end of May.

Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor - WHAT'S IN A GAME?

Katrina plays
'topless' Ranbir!

Okay, so your minds are already running riot with naughty ideas? Hold on, lovelies, the story is yet to come. Apparently, while shooting for Raajneeti in Bhopal, the pretty Katrina Kaif was determined to learn cricket. And guess who played tutor? 'Good friend' Ranbir Kapoor, of course.
The interesting part is that RK looked like a true sportsman, minus the clothes. The hottie was topless on-field, even fashionably flaunting his cool blue boxer. No wonder, the rest of the crew couldn't take the heat (they safely blamed it on the rising mercury), and left the lovely twosome on the field, Katz didn't give up at that.
The gal was so persistent that she roped in Arjun Rampal and the captain of the Rajneeti team, Prakash Jha, to join them. Even after sunset, she had the lights turned on to continue the game. We love more is RK's topless cricket style. We always knew this boy was a true style icon. He could put our 'real' cricketers to shame. Only in their SQ (read: style quotient) that is.
