HEALTH ISSUE: Children Attention

Low attention span in kids
linked to pesticides

Chicago: A new analysis of US health data links children's attention-deficit disorder with exposure to common pesticides used on fruits and vegetables.

While the study couldn't prove that pesticides used in agriculture contribute to childhood learning problems, experts said the research is persuasive. "I would take it quite seriously." said Virginia Rauh of Columbia University, who has studied prenatal exposure to pesticides and wasn't involved in the new study. Children may be especially prone to the health risks of pesticides as they're still growing and they may consume more pesticide residue than adults relative to their body weight.
In the body, pesticides break down into compounds that can be measured in urine. The study found detectable levels: The compounds turned up in the urine of 94% of the children. The kids with higher levels had increased chances of having ADHD, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, a common problem that causes students to have trouble in school.
The kids may have eaten food treated with pesticides, breathed it in the air or swallowed it in drinking water. Experts said it's likely kids who don't live near farms are exposed through what they eat.

HEALTH ISSUE: EASY WAY OUT?

IVF may soon make most babies
More Accurate For Reproduction Than Having Sex: Report

Couples may stop having sex to conceive babies within a decade and use in vitro fertilisation instead, sceintists say in a new report.

Thirty somethings could routinely conceive babies using IVF within the next ten years because it will have become better than sex as means of reproduction, the scientists from Australia and Europe predicted.
Advances in IVF technology mean it will be possible to produce embryos with a success rate of virtually 100% and cultivate them in computer-controlled storage facilities.
The couples going for IVF have a much better chance of conceiving through IVF than young adults peak condition, who have only a one-in-four chance a month of conceiving naturally, according to the report.
Among those over 35, the chance of natural conception falls to less than one in 10. Though modern fertility techniques have meant the healthiest couples already have a 50-50 chance of success using IVF, the authors of the new report say that this may just be the beginning.
Gabor Vajta, an Australian vet and lead author of the report, worked with experts from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Empbryology and pointed out that test-tube embryo production in cattle was 100 times more efficient than natural means of calf creation.
There is no reason, Vajta argues, why artificial human reproduction should not also become 100 times more effcient than the traditional precess of "trying for a baby".
"We are not quite at that stage yet, but it's where we're heading. Natural human reproduction is at best a fairly inefficient process. Within the next five to 10 years. couples approaching 40 will access the IVF industry first when they want to have a baby, " the London Times quoted John Yovich, a do-author of the report, as saying.

HEALTH ISSUE: SHORT CUT

SHORT CUTS

Plastic lens may soon
replace laser eye surgery

Scientists from Moorfields Eye Hospital in London have come up with a novel  treatment to correct short-sightedness in people. According to the researchers, the new treatment changes the path of light entering the eye by using a synthetic lens inserted in front of the natural lens. Myopia or short sightedness is a condition where the eye focuses images in front of the retina instead of directly on it.This means objects further away appear blurred. "Our findings suggest phakic IOLs are safer than excimer laser surgery for correcting moderate to high levels of short-sightedness," the British newspaper Daily. Mail quoted lead author Allon Barsam as saying.

Homeopathy is witchcraft: UK medical body

London: Describing homeopathy as "witchcraft" a body of junior doctors in Britain has voted over whelmingly to seek a blanker ban on the practice of the alternative medicine.

Hundreds of members of the British Medical Association (BMA) have passed a motion denouncing the practice of homeopathy, saying, taxpayers should not foot bills for remedies which have no scientific basis to support them.

HEALTH ISSUE: For Kids, Telling Lies...

For Kids, telling lies a
sign of future success?
At the age of two, 20% of kids will lie. This rises to 50%
by three and 90% at four. However, the tendency starts
to fall away by the age of 16, suggests a study.

London: There is no need to worry if a child is lying, claim experts, as it proves the kid has reached an important step in his or her mental development. What's more, it's a sign of future success.
After studying 1,200 children, researchers from the Institute of Child Study at Toronto University, found that kids can be confirmed to have developed "executive functioning" when they are able to keep the truth at the back of their mind so their fib sounds more convincing.
The researchers claim that at the age of two, 20% of kids will lie. This rises to 50% by three and 90% of at four.
However, the tendency starts to fall away by the age of 16, when it is 70% With adolescence, young people learn to use the less harmful "white lies" to avoid hurting people's feelings.

HEALTH ISSUE: 'METHUSELAH"

'Methuselah' genes
Key to living to 100
Discovery Could Lead To Anti-Aging Drug

The Genes product against the effects of smoking and bad diet and can also delay the onset of age-related illnesses such as cancer by up to 3 decades

Scientists have discovered the "Methuselah" genes whose lucky carrier have a much improved chance of living to 100 even if they indulge in an unhealthy lifestyle.
The genes appear to protect people against the effects of smoking and bad diet and can delay the onset of age-related illnesses like cancer and heart disease by up to three decades.
No single gene is a guaranteed fountain of youth. Instead, the secret of longevity probably lies in having the right "suite" of genes, according to new studies of centenarians and their families. such combinations are extremely rare only one person in 10,000 reaches the age of 100.
The genes found so far each appear to give a little extra protection against the diseases of old age. Centenarians appear to have a high chance of having several such genes embedded in their DNA.
"Long-lived people do not have fewer disease genes or aging genes." said Eline Slagboom of Leiden University, who is leading a study into 3,500 nonagenarians. "Instead they have other genes that stop those disease genes from being switched on. Longevity is strongly genetic and inherited."
Slagboom and her colleagues have published studies showing how the physiology of people in long-lived families differs from normal people. "People who live to a great age metabolise fats and glucose differently, their skin ages more slowly and the have lower prevalence of heart disease, diabetes and hypertension," she said, "These factors are all under strong genetic control, so we see the same features in the children of very old people."
The so-called Methuselah genes named after the biblical patriatrch who lived to 969 are thought to include' ADIPOQ. which is found in about 10 of young people but in nearly 30 of people living past-100. The CETP gene and the ApoC3 gene are found in 10 of young people , but in about 20 of centenarians.
The studies show that tiny mutations in the make-up of particular genes can sharply increase a person's lifespan. Nonetheless, environmental factors suchas the decline in infections diseases are an important factor in the steady rise in the number of centenarians. The human genome contains about 28,000 genes, but they are controlled by a tiny number of so-called regulator genes.
An anto-aging drug which might be taken by millions could be the ultimate block buster for the pharmaceutical industry.

T20 ICC WORLD TWENTY20 WEST INDIES 2010 - Final ENG Vs AUS

T20 ICC
World Cup
Twenty20
West Indies
THE ENGLISH MAIDEN
Collingwood's Men Chase Down
148 To Win First Ever World Title

Bridgetown (Barbados): England can finally sing into the sunset, and make if not drink and make merry till the morning breaks. Right from 1975, when multi-nation limited overs tournaments were first introduced, they have always been left with broken hearts and bucketfuls of tears; on a bright, shining afternoon here at the kensington Oval, eventually, they had something more than a pint of beer to smile over: an ICC Trophy.
It is just ironical that it is the T20 World Cup, a format many still rection doesn't count as cricket. Clearly, the times have changed; for the English Lions, though, it is a new dawn.
In what was billed an as Ashes final, even before the first Ashes ball has been bowled, England won the toss, shattered Australia's top order, and overhauled the below-par total of 147 for six.
Two batsmen of South African descent led the charge, in a way English batsmen probably wouldn't or couldn't; maybe, that was the only way to break this jinx. Craig kieswetter (63: 49b, 7x4, 2x6) and Kevin Pietersen (47: 31b, 4x4, 1x6) smashed 117 runs to snatch the team's first moment of ICC glory, with over 18 deliveries left.
As Paul Collingwood scored the winning run. Pietersen raced into the field, arms held high and screaming; he was followed by the rest of his mates, and it didn't them long topindown their captain. Within no-time, the huddle materialised: the celebrations followed. Australia, on the other hand, still have to wait.
Earlier, after electing to field on a promising track, England snapped three quick wickets to go right on top. But then entered the other Hussey: David; and,in typical Aussie fashion, he began the repair work. David started with extreme caution  (7 off 19 deliveries), first unravelling the pitch to his satisfaction: then, as the nerves settled down along with the demons, he began the counter-attack. After 10 overs, though, Australia were merely 47 for four, with the top order back in the hut.
As soon as captain Michael Clark (27) fell, though, just like brother Michael had done in the semifinal two days ago, David took charge. In the 13th over, probably energised by the sight of Cameron White, he smashed spinner Yardy for a six: White promptly responded with a 4, 6, 4. 22 runs. The charge had begun.
In no time, they were head to head. sprinting for singles and creating those big hits. By the 15th over, Australia were back in the game: 94 for four.]
