Asin - FACING THE MUSIC

Friday, June 18, 2010

READY FOR
SRI LANKA!
Asin will shoot there for the next Salman
Khan starrer. Will that stir a hornets' nest?

Asin has packed her bags and is leaving for Sri Lanka next Sunday  for the shoot of her new Anees Bazmee-directed Reddy,Uttama Puthgiran  with Dhanush and Genelia. which has Salman Khan as her hero. The film is a remake of a Telugu film by the same name. and is also being remade in Tamil as Uttama Puthiran with Dhanush and Genelia. Asin's departure to Colombo is sure to stir a hornets' nest in Kollywood, as she is also doing Kavalkaran with Vijay.
Kollywood is still reeling under the impact of the raging controversy over the recent awards ceremony in Colombo in which top Bollywood stars took part. The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) even passed a resolution barnning the films of these stars.
To rub it in, Salman Khan --  in an interview to a television channel -- said, "I don't really understand this. If there are some people here (in Sri Lanka) who are not doing well and are in trouble, then we have come to entertain them. We are here to give them something. This way we won't be able to visit kashmir, Gujarat or Afghanistan. If our people are in difficulty we should not abandon them." Meanwhile, as per the original plan, Reddy was to start its shoot in Mautitius, but the Rajapakse government in Sri Lanka had gone out of its way to woo and roll out the red carpet for Salman and other Bollywood stars, who were also impressed with the locales in Sri Lanka.
Choosing Sri Lanka as a venue for the popular awards ceremony had angered many Tamil supporters in India. A group of Tamils had marched to superstar Amitabh Bachchans's residence in Mumbai last month, urging him to boycott it. After the event, the SIFCC and FEFSI immediately swung into acton and pulled Hrithi's Kites  out of theatres in Chennai and slapped a ban on other stars and their films. Ram Gopal Varma was asked to drop Vivek Oberoi from Raktha Charithra, if he wanted his Suriya film to release in the state!
All this could have repercussions on Vijay's next too as one of the actor's major markets is the overseas box-office, mainly due to the patronage of sri Lankan Tamils who form the bulk of the viewership, When we contacted Asin, this is what she had to say. "I value and care for the feelings of my fans very much. Attending the awards function in Sri Lanka was my call and I decided not to go. But the final decision regarding Reddy is to be taked by the producer and I'm contract-bound to shoot for them. I have expressed my concerns and I believe they will be taken into consideration before the final decision is taken."

Health Issue: Mechanical Heart pumps

Mechanical hear pumps
may save lives

Washington, DC: Scientists at the University of Gotherburg, Sweden, suggest that some patients with life-threatening heart failure can be helped by mechanical heart pumps.
A total of 99 patients with life-threatening heart failure were treated with a heart pump for short or long-term circulatory support. "Two-thirds of these patients survived." said Hans Liden, researcher at Sahigrenska Academy and thoracic surgeon at Sahigrenska University Hospital.
"A total of around 300 patients have been treated with heart pumps at the hospital over the years -- and with good results," Liden added. Heart pumps for short-term support are used mainly for young and middle-aged patients with acute problems, such as heart attacks.
Heart pumps for long-term support aqre normally used for patients with chronic heart failure who are so ill that they are not expected to survive the wait or the operation for a new heart. "In the group given short-term support, around half the patients recovered sufficient heart function to be able to return home," said Liden.

Health Issue: Do I look fat, Honey?

Do I look fat, honey? No, it;s just a distorted image

London: Ladies, the next time you find yourself a bit fatter in front of a mirror, fret not, for a new study has claimed that a woman often sees her reflection as a shorter and wider version of reality.
This is because the human brain "massively distorts" its own body image, creating a shorter figue which can be two-thirds wider than in real life, according to researchers at University College London, who made the "hall of mirrors" discovery while carrying out an experiment on people's hands.
In their study, the researchers asked volunteers to place their left hand under a board and guess the positions of the knuckles and fingertips, pointing them out with a baton. Participants estimated their hands to be two-thirds wider and a third shorter than actual measurements showed they were.
Neuroscientists suspect the reason for these distortions may lie in the way the brain receives information from different regions of the skin. Lead researcher Matthew Longo said, "The pharase 'I know the town like the back of my hand' suggests that we have near perfect knowledge of the size and position of our own body parts but these results show that this is far from being the case.
"Our results show dramatic distortions of hand shape, which were highly consistent across participants. The hand appears to be represented as wider thanit actually is and the fingers as shorter than they actually are--a finding that might also apply to other parts of the body."
The research aims to find out how the brain knows where all parts of the body are in space even when your eyes are closed - an ability known as "position sense".

News: DEEP SECRET

100 times more water
on Moon than thought

Washington: Moon has hundred times more water than was previously thought, and it could be widespread deep under its surface, planetary scientists have claimed.
A US-led team has based its findings on an analysis of the mineral apatite in lunar rocks picked up by Apollo space missions and in lunar meteorite found in Africa and say that there is at least 100 times more water in the Moon's minerals that was previously believed.
"Water may be ubiquitous within the lunar interior," the planetary scientists wrote in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "For over 40 years we thought the Moon was dry. We found that the minimum water content ranged from 64 parts per billion to 5 parts per million - at least two orders of magnitude greater than previous results," Francis McCubbin of Carnegie Institution of Washington, who led the team , sai." We can now finally begin to consider the implications and the origin of water in the interior of the Moon."
c          According to him, the water is not immediately accessible - it is incorporated in the rocky interior of the Moon.

Health Issue: DOCTER FILES

Easy-to-use drug that clots blood
can save 1 lakh lives a year

Paris: An easy-to-use blood-clotting drug that costs just a few dollars could save up to 100,000 lives each year from road accidents and violence, according to a paper published on Tuesday by the lancet.
Docters at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine tested an off patent treatment called tranexamic acie (TXA) among 20,000 severely-injured adults in 274 hospitals in 40 countries. Participants received either one gram of TXA by injection followed by another one gram in a drip over the following eight hours, or a dummy lookalike.
TXA cut the risk of death by any cause by 10% compared with the placebo, the paper said, When it came to the risk of death by bleeding. TXA scored a reduction of 15% over the placebo.
Each year, more than a million people die as a result of trafic injuries, and another 1.6 million die as a result of acts of violence, and many could be saved by swift action to stop haemorrhaging, the researchers said "Each year about 600,000 injured patients bleed to death world wide," said lead author lan Roberts, a professor example, road crashes, or intentional , such as shootings, stabbings or land-mine injuries, and the majority of deaths occur soon after injury."
TXA works by reducing the breakdown of clots, The drug is manufactured by a number of companies, and a gram of it costs about $4.50. If TXA became widely available and was used promptly, it could save as many as 100,000 lives a year, 13,000 of them in India and 12,000 in China, where road deaths are surging, the paper said.
The trail was carried out to see whether TXA was effective and whether it had bad side effects, such as increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes and lung clots. On the latter score, there was no increase in any of these complication, the authors said.

Health Issue: LOW ON SUGAR

White rice raises risk of diabetes
Brown A Better option, Is Rich In Vitamins And Minerals, Says Research

Washington: In a finding which has implications for Asians, including Indians, whose staple food is rice, scientists claim to have found that eating white rice could increase one's risk of developing type 2 diabetes whitle the brown variety can power the risk of the disease.
A new study by the Harvard School of Public Health has fouynd that eating five or more servings of white rice per week is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, while consuming two or more servings of brwn rice every week could lower the risk substantially.
"The study is the first to specifically examine white reci and brown rice in relation to diabetes risk," said Qisun, who led the team, "Rice consumption in the US has dramatically increased in recent decades. We believe replacing white rice and other refined grains with whole grains, including brown rice, would help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes," said Sun.
Brown rice is superior to white rice when it comes to fibre content, minerals, vitamins, and phytochemicals, and it often does not generate as large an increase in blood sugar levels after a meal.
Milling and polishing brown rice removes most vitamins and minerals. In addition, milling strips away most of its fibre, which helps deter diabetes by slowing the rush of sugar into the bloodstream.
For their study, the scientists examined white and brown rice consumption in relation to type 2 diabetes risk in 157,463 women and 39,765 men participating in the Brigham and Women's Hospital-based Nurses' Health Study i and II and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.
They analysed responses about diet. lifestyle, and health conditions which participants completed every four years. The team documented 5,500 cases of type 2 diabetes during 22 years of follow-up in NHS 1 participants, 2,648 cases over 20 years in participants.
Sun found the biggest consumers of white rice were less likely to have European ancestry or to smoke and more likely to have a famiuly history of diabetes.
In the analysis, the scientists adjusted for a variety of factors that could influence the results, including age, body mas index, smoking status, alcohol intake, family history of diabetes, and found the trend of increased risk associated with high white rice consumption remained.

Asia Cup Cricket - @ Sri Lanka

Asia Cup Cricket
Sri Lanka Vs Pakistan
Maling steals Afridi thunder

Dambulla: Shahid Afridi's boom boom century could not help Pakistan win a close match against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup on Tuesday. Skipper Afridi batted as if the match was indeed a one-sided affair. With the help of eight fours and seven effortell sixes, Afridi smashed his fifth One-day century and when he was at the crease Sri Lanka were out of the match. But, Malinga came to the party at the death in his characteristic way taking five for 34 in his 10 overs as Pakistan once again lost the plot from winning position to lose by 16 runs in the opening match. Sri Lanka now have two points from the match.
Despite the loss, this match easily belonged to Afridi for his aggressive exploits with the bat. He was like a lone ranger with a cramped leg and back. Afridi made a terrific 109 off 76 balls. At one stagte while chasing Sri Lanka's target, Pakistan were 23 for 2 in 10 overs and reeling under tremensous pressure. But Afridi started punching the ball all aroud the stadium.
Even in the Sri Lankan innings, Pakistan were in complete control till the 37th over. But in the remaining 13 overs of the match, Pakistan conceded 74 runs to Sri Lanka, who ended up getting 242 for 9 in their stipulated 50 overs. It was made possibloe due to Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews' unbeaten 55 off 61 balls.
Earlier, Sri Lanka's decision to bat first backfired when they lost two early wickets. But, both Mahela Jayawardene and skipper Kumar Sangakkara took charged and repaired the Lankan innings scoring 54 and 42 respectively. For Pakistan, the much awaited comeback to Shoaib Akhtar was an impressive one.
The fast bowler was not as fast as he was a decade ago, but he was repeated clocking 145 km,/hr mark and surprised the Lankan batsmen with his trademark short deliveries.
