SHORT CUTS

Annoyed by cellphones?
Scientists explain why

Ever wonder why overhearing a cellphone conversation is so annoying? American researchers think they have found the answer. Whether it is the office, on a train or in a car, only half of the conversation is overheard which drains more attention and concentration than when overhearing two people talking, according to scientists at Cornell University. "We have less control to move away our attention from half a conversation (or halfalogue) than when listening to a dialogue," said lauren Emberson, a co-author of the study that will be published in the journal Psychological Science. "Since halfalogues really are more distracting and you can't tune them out, this could explain why people are irritated," she said.

Coffee addiction may shrink baby:
Pregnant women who drink six cups of coffee every day may have smaller babies than women who consume less caffeine, according to a Dutch study. Researchers from the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam found that those who consumed the caffeine equivalent of six cups of coffee per day during any trimester gave birth to slightly shorter babies than those mothers had consumed less caffeine during pregnancy.

HEALTH ISSUE: Dating of fossils....

Skull reveals new human
ancestor - light & short

Dating of fossils shows that Homo gautengensis walked upright in southern Africa as long as 2 million years ago and, fully grown, stood just over a metre tall and weighed only about 50kg.

Washington: Scientists claim to have discovered aq new branch of the human family tree - a species that was light, short, and fond of chewy plants.

An International team, led by the University of New South Wales in Australia, has identified and named the species Homo gautengensis, which is said to be the earliest recognezed species of Homo.
The identification is based on a partial skull - known only by its museum catalogue number Stw 53-along with two other partial skulls, several jaws, teeth and other bones found at various times at Sterk fontein and other nearby caves.
However, detailed scrutiny and comparison with the other fossils, the scientists have claimed it was sufficiently different to warrant its classification as its own species and that it arose earlier than Homo habilis.
Dating of the fossils showed that Homo gautengensis walked upright in southern Africa as long as two million years ago and, fully grown, stood just over a metre tall and weighed only about 50 kilogrammes.
It existed until perhaps about 600 000 years ago but the scientists do not believe it gave rise to our own species, Homo sapiens. Its molar and pre-molar teeth were relatively large, suggesting that its diet included plant material that required plenty of chewing.
"The stone tools it used were fairly primitive, but those and its use of fire show us that it was using technology to obtain and perhaps prepare its food," lead scientist Darren Curnoe said.
Its remains were found in the same caves as those of two distant relatives in human family tree. Australopithecus robustus and Australopithecus africanus. Homo gauterigensis seems to have been a more specialized omnivore adapted to life on ground, whereas the more ape-like A africanus, had longer arms and other adaptations for cliumbingtrees.

Work fundas!

Work is worship, right? Of course, but it's also fun, especially for Bollywood's badshah Shah Rukh Khan A staunch believer in hard work, he sure knows how to have his cake and eat it too. According to him, work can be fun if one thinks it to be so. And since it's mostly work that defines people, he says he'd like to be defined as fun. He adds that though one is never sure about the end results, it's the process that's more important. Hmmm... how true indeed.

Trisha : NO ISSUES

REAL VS FAKE

Trisha's career graph seems to be soaring. And needless to say, the pretty dame's delighted about it. The lady, who is already basking in the success of her Tollywood film Namo Venkatesa, has more good news awaiting her.
At the moment, she is working on her debut Bollywood flick, Khatta Meeta, with Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar, which sources say is shaping up well. After that, she will be seen working with Kamal Haasan and Madhavan on a Tamil film. Now, all these projects with the best of the best should be good enough to make anyone happy. So, it isn't surprising to find the lady all smiles. But what is surprising is the fact that although there is happiness writ large on her face, there is also that unmistakable look of concern.
And then we realise that she is a little concerned about a virtual battle that she is fighting online to establish her identity!
It seems a user has created a fake ID of the actress on a micro-blogging website and has even been uploading the same pictures that the actress has been using on her original account. In fact, recently, the fake user went to the extent of 'clearing the record' for her 'fans' stating that both the IDs belonged to the actress herself and that she was using two identities because she didn't want the media to make a big deal'!
Meanwhile, what's the real Trisha saying? Well, the Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa star, who is as cool as a cucumber, is going about her work as usual.

Noureen Dewulf - MAKING NEWS

'I'm an Indian at heart'

She's shy but spirited, sexy and self-assured, giggly and a WAG, but she's also Indian, all of 26, and a Urdu Gujarati-English speaking Muslim girl from Pune who's done in three years what no Bolloywood actress has managed so far - to crack Hollywood and bag roles in big films opposite the likes of Jennifer Lopez (The Back-up Plan), Matthew McConaughey (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past) and also ving Rhames (of the Mission Impossible series fame). Her other films being American Dreamz, The comebacks, Ocean's Thirteen, West Bank Story and the Goods.there's more in 2007 when she made her Hollywood debut, she was chosen by an American magazine known to be the ultimate guy's guide as one of the Most Desirable Women On The Planet!
Actress Noureen DeWulf is amused at the excitement her name is suddenly causing back home. She giggles over the phone in a long-distance chat from Los Angeles, "I really don't know how all this happened. It's a mystery to me. The roles offered to me have nothing to do with my being Indian or Muslim. They are roles that would go to any actress, It's an equally tough struggle for any ethnic actress. Whether i was a Muslim or not didn't affect people because I look very American. But actually I am very Indian at heart, I feel very lucky and blessed. And I've worked really hard to get here."
But, she admits it isn't easy for an Indian girl to crakc Hollywood. "For anyone who is not from here, the competition is unimaginable. I had to go through the route of meeting directors and producers on a weekly basis. The process requires patience,"says the actress whose next big release (after rom-com The Back-Up Plan) is another biggie, The Taqwacores, based on the popular book by Michael Muhammad Knight. "this time, I play a Muslim girl," adds Noureen, "but otherwise, I am not being offered roles in Hollywood related to my ethnicity."

Science and Study: SHORT CUTS

SHORT CUTS

It's official: Men lie more
than women

A new study has confirmed what many ladies already knew: Men tell more lies than women. According to the study, on an average, a man will tell three lies a day, racking up 1,092 whoppers in a year. However, an average woman will come out with 728, fibbing just twice a day, reports the Daily Express. The study, which was commissioned by researchers at the Science Museum in London, found that 82% of females questioned said telling a lie ate away at their conscience but only 70% of men confessed to suffering pangs of guilt. The top 10 lies men tell their partners include "I'm stuck in traffic", "Sorry, i missed your call", "You've lost weight" and "It's just what I've always wanted".

Eight-year-old girl grows new kidneys:

An eight-year-old girl demonstrated a miracle to doctors when she grew two new kidneys after her original kidneys failed.Angel Burton of Sheffield, UK, was a victim of painful infections and innumerable scans, but when she was to undergo an operation to create an artificial valve, the doctors were amazed to find that she had grown two fully functional kidneys - a sign that she is cured. Around 1% of people have an extra "duplex" kidney, but it is very rare for them to be fully formed.

Health Issue: Happiness begins at 50

Happiness begins at 50

London: For many, the age of 50 may be the beginning of the end, but a group of scientists claim the good life begins only when people reach their fifties.

Despite increased risk of death and disease, people in their fifties worry less, ignore the negatives and accentuate the positives, according to scientists at Stony Brook University, New York.
The researchers said that when people reach the landmark age, their stress, anger and worry fade gradually and feelings of happiness start to surge. Arthur Stone, one of the authors of the study. said their findings were "striking".
"You'd think that as chronic illness threatens life would get worse but that is not the case as people don't focus on the threats, " he said. "They focus on the good things like family and friends."
The experts surveyed over 340,000 men and women in US aged between 18 to 85. Stress and anger reduced after people reached their early 20s with worry declining after the age of fifty. they said. The only feeling that remained constant was that of sadness.

Health Issue: Meat is the real risk of Heart

Processed, not red,
meat is the real risk

Chicago: Eating bacon, sausage, hot dogs and other processed meats can raise the risk of heart disease and diabetes, US researchers said in a study that identifies the real bad boys of the meat counter.

Eting unprocessed beef, pork or lamb appeared not to raise risks of heart attacks and diabetes, they said, suggesting that salt and chemical preservatives may be the real cause of these two health problems associated with eating meat. The study, an analysis of other research called a meta analysis, did not look at high blood pressure or cancer, which are also linked with high meat, consumption.
"Processed meats such as bacon, salami, sausages, hot dogs and processed deli meats may be the most important to avoid, "said Renata Micha of the Harvard School of Public Health, whose study appears in Circulation.Based on her findings, she said people who eat one serving per week or less of processed meats have less of a risk.

HEALTH ISSUE: Stronger vaginal gels against HIV

Stronger vaginal gels eyed
in battle against HIV

Washington: Try after try to make vaginal creams that could repel the AIDS virus have failed. now, researchers are testing if a drug used to treat HIV infection finally might give women a tool to prevent it - by infusing the medicine into vaginal gels and contraceptive-style rings.

Even quick-dissolving anti HIV films are being created, the same style now used for breath-fresheners or allergy medicines but made for fingertip application in the vaginal. Called microbicides, this kind of woman-controlled protection is considered key to battling the HIV epidemic.
For two decades, scientists tried less powerful medications in disappointing microbicide attempts. Results from the first study to see if this new strategy works - south African women tested a gel made of AIDS drug tenofovir - aren't due until July. Tenofovir concentrates in vaginal tissue at far higher levels via a gel than a pill- with little spread of the drug elsewhere, easing side-effect concerns, says AIDS expert, Salim Abdool Karim, of the KwaZulu-Natal University.

Health Issue: Rabid Spread Of HIV,

Smallpox wipeout sparked AIDS spread?
End Of Vaccination Took Away Protection-From HIV, Say researchers

Washington: The end of smallpox vaccination in the mid-20th century could be responsible for a loss of protection that led to the rapid spread of HIV, according to researchers.

It is known that vaccinia immunization, as given to prevent the spread of smallpox, reduces HIV replication in the laboratory. Raymond Weinstein, a scientist at George Mason University, Manassas, Virginia, US, in collaboration with a team from George Washington University and UCLA to look at the ability of whiteblood cells taken from people recently immunized with vaccinia to support HIV re;ication compared to unvaccinated controls.
To test if smallpox jab interferes with how well HIV multiplies, researchers looked at the white blood cells taken from people recently immunised against smallpox and tested how they responded to HIV.
They found significantly lower replication rates of HIV in blood cells from vaccinated individuals, compared with those from unvaccinated controls. The smallpox vaccine appeared to cut HIV replication five-fold.
"There have been several proposed explanations for the rapid spread of HIV in Africa, including wars, the reuse of unsterilized needles and the contamination of early batches of polio vaccine. However, all of these have been either disproved or do not sufficiently explain the behavior of the HIV pandemic. Our finding that prior immunization with vaccinia virus may provide an individual with some degree of protection to subsequent HIV infection suggests that the withdrawal of such vaccination may be a partial explanation,"Weinstein added.
Smallpox immunization was gradually withdrawn from the 1950s to the 1970s following the worldwide eradicationof the disease, and HIV has been spreading exponentially since approximately the same time period.
The researchers have proposed that vaccination may confer protection against HIV by producing long term alterations in the immune system, possibly including the expression of a certain receptor, CCR5, on the surface of a person's white blood cells which is exploited by both viruses.
Speaking about the results, We Instien said: "While these results are very interesting and hopefully may lead to a new weapon against the HIV pandemic, they are very preliminary and it is far too soon to recommend the general use of vaccinia immunization for fighting HIV.
