'I'm an Indian at heart'
She's shy but spirited, sexy and self-assured, giggly and a WAG, but she's also Indian, all of 26, and a Urdu Gujarati-English speaking Muslim girl from Pune who's done in three years what no Bolloywood actress has managed so far - to crack Hollywood and bag roles in big films opposite the likes of Jennifer Lopez (The Back-up Plan), Matthew McConaughey (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past) and also ving Rhames (of the Mission Impossible series fame). Her other films being American Dreamz, The comebacks, Ocean's Thirteen, West Bank Story and the Goods.there's more in 2007 when she made her Hollywood debut, she was chosen by an American magazine known to be the ultimate guy's guide as one of the Most Desirable Women On The Planet!
Actress Noureen DeWulf is amused at the excitement her name is suddenly causing back home. She giggles over the phone in a long-distance chat from Los Angeles, "I really don't know how all this happened. It's a mystery to me. The roles offered to me have nothing to do with my being Indian or Muslim. They are roles that would go to any actress, It's an equally tough struggle for any ethnic actress. Whether i was a Muslim or not didn't affect people because I look very American. But actually I am very Indian at heart, I feel very lucky and blessed. And I've worked really hard to get here."
But, she admits it isn't easy for an Indian girl to crakc Hollywood. "For anyone who is not from here, the competition is unimaginable. I had to go through the route of meeting directors and producers on a weekly basis. The process requires patience,"says the actress whose next big release (after rom-com The Back-Up Plan) is another biggie, The Taqwacores, based on the popular book by Michael Muhammad Knight. "this time, I play a Muslim girl," adds Noureen, "but otherwise, I am not being offered roles in Hollywood related to my ethnicity."
