Monday, June 28, 2010

Johnny Depp
loves soccer

Johnny Depp who's busy shooting for Pirates of Stanger Tides, is a heavy duty football fan. With the FIFA World Cup going on, he doesn't want to miss a single game. But since he has to continuously keep shooting, the Sleepy Hollow star has installed television sets throughout the set.
The actor, who reprises his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth installment of the swashbuckling franchise, was determined that he and his co-stars would not miss the sport's current tournament while working on the movie. A source says, "There are TVs all over the set and regular breaks for big games. Johnny likes his soccer, and with so many Brits on the cast and crew, it souldn't be fair to have them miss the action."

No breast feeding
in public

This one is fo all those new mothers who get perplexed when their child begins to cry for its feed and they'd open up not caring whether they are in a secluded place or out in public.

She wrote on her social networking site, "I'm at lunch, the woman at the table next to me is breast feeding her baby with no cover-up." She further adds, "Then (she) puts the baby on the table and changes her diaper." sSome quick digestion that was... Ughh!"

ENJOYING THE GAME: Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan's not
a team player

Now, don't take the headline literally. When we say Aamir Khan is not a team player, we mean something different altogether.
Apparently, despite all the hullabaloo of how some stars acquited their cricket teams etc: negotiations are reportedly on with several big gies for the next cricketing season. Though there have been repeated attempts by many to get Aamir to become the face of a team, the actor has resisted. "Owning a cricket team comes with a lot of responsibility. Those responsibilities will take me away from cinema, which is my passion. People have approached me to invest in a team, but I have declined," says the star.

Colour me pink

Ever since Ameesha Patel sent that pink teddy bear to her best friend, the pregnant Maanyata Dutt, people have been wondering whether Maanyata and Sanjay are about to have a girl (or girls if they are twins). Everyone knows the pink for girls and blue for boys theory.
However, sources say that the Dutts haven't actually tried to do a sonography to find out the sex of their to-be-borns. And the reason why Ameesha sent Maanyata a pink teddy is because she likes all things pik. It's her favourite colour.

HIGH HOPES: Arjun

NEED A HIT!

Action king Arjun is waiting with bated breath for his Maasi to hit the screens. The actor, who didn't have a single release last year, is pinning all his hopes on the film. Though the actor has several films in his hand, including Vandae Maatharam, Mei Kaan, Vallakottai and JaiHind 2, he's eagerly awaiting Maasi's release.
Director Kicha, at a recent press conference, said that he was planing to release Maasi and Bhavani in July. Maasi, which has Sandalwood heroine Haripriya playing the lead, will see Arjun playing a cop. He fights the goons and political miscreants who corrupt the society.
A source close to the actor says. "It's true that Arjun has played a cop in several of his hit flicks. But, he knows it's a safe bet and he can never go wrong with this role."
Meanwhile, as newer action heroes like Suriya, Vikram, Vishal and Arun Vijay are making their mark as action heroes with their daredevil action stunts, Arjun has started worrying. He needs a hit desperately to regain his position as an action hero.
And now, we hear that the dubbing rights of  Dhalapathy (Maasi in Telugu) have been sold and that the two versions will release simultaneously.
Arjun, who was last seen on screen in Thiruvannamalai, is also doing a TV commercial. But we hope his stint on the silver screen continues!

LOOKS MATTER: Cheryl Cole

Cheeky,
isn't it ?
Fans want designer dimples like Cheryl Cole's

Guess what's the latest fad? Getting dimpled cheeks like singer Cheryl Cole. Plastic surgeons have been receiving requests from crazy fans asking for dimples just like hers.
Apparently, surgeons say there's an 11 percent rise in inquiries for dimpleplasty in the past two months alone. The phenomenon has hit UK after gaining popularity in america. But there's a cause for concern as experts aren't sure about its lont-term effects. Besides, the dimples will also not look entirely natural, as they'll appear only if one grins.
A spokesman for one of the hospitals said, "There is a worrying rise in demand for 'designer dimples' as women go to extreme lengths to look like their favourite celebrities, including Cheryl Cole. However, designer dimples are akin to permanent scarring and could turn to designer disasters as the face begins to droop with age.

Health Issue: GENDER BENDER

Why are women more sensitive
to stress than men
Women are more likely to suffer from depression and stress out than their cool male counterparts. New research suggests there might be a biological reason for the gender difference.
The new study, done on rats, finds females are more sensative to low levels of an important stress hormone and less able to adapt to high levels of it than males. since rats do have some of the same neural systems we do, the rat research could have implications for humans, though stress in humans is more complicated than in rodents, the researchers say.
It has long been recongnised that women have a higher incidence of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, said study researcher Rita Valentino, a bhavioral neuroscientist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. But the underlying biological mechanisms for that difference have been unknown.
Valentino's research focuses on corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) a hormone released in the brain in responses to stress, in bothy humans and rats. CRF is a neurotransmitter, meaning it helps communicate signals between brain cells. Some neurons "send out" the CRF signal while others contain receptors to receive it.
Valentino and her colleagues analysed the brains of rats as they responded to a swin stress test, aimed to trigger the release of the CRF hormone.
In female rats, neurons had receptors for CRF that bound more tightly to the hormone than in male rats, and so were more responsive to CRF. Also, after exposure to stress, male rats had an adaptive response, called internalization, in their brain cells. Their cells reduced the number of CRF receptors, and became less responsive, to the homone. In female rats this adaptation did not occur.
"This is an animal study, and we cannot say that the biological mechanism is the same in people, " Valentino said, adding that other mechanisms play a role in human stress responses, including the actions of other hormons. However, "researchers already known that CRF regulation is disrupted in stress-related psychiatric disorders, so this research may be relevant to the underlying human biology," she said.
In addition much of the previous research on stress disorders in animal models used only male rodents, so important sex differences may have gone undetected, Valentino said. "Pharmacology researchers investigating CRF antagonists as drug treatments for depression may need to take into account gender differences at the molecular level," she said.

Health Issue: Childhood cancers might cellphone masts....

'No link between cancer in kids & cellphone towers'

British scientists who conducted the largest study yet into cellphone masts and childhood cancers sy that living close to a mast does not increase the risk of a pregnant woman's body developing cancer.
In a study looking at almost 7,000 children and patterns of early childhood cancers across Britain, the researchers found that those who developed cancer before the age of five were no more likely to have been born close to a mast than their peers.
"These results are reassuring," said Paul Elliot, director of the centre for environment and health at Imperial College Londaon, who worked on the study. "We found no pattern to suggest that the children of mums living near a base station during pregnancy had a greater risk of developing cancer than those who lived eosewhere."
Use of cellphones has increased dramatically in recent years and questions have been raised about possible health effects. The authors cautioned they were unable to get information about individual exposure among molthers-to-be to a cell phone handset.

Health Issue: Allow Pregnancy only After Compatibility

Woman's body is picky about sperm
Allow Pregnancy Only After Compatibility Of Male Has Been Established
Sydney: A woman's body may be unconsciously selective about sperm, allowing some men's to progress to pregnancy but killing off the chances of less suitable mathces, an Australian researcher said on Wednesday.
University of Adelaide Professor Sarah Robertson said her research suggested that sperm contains "signalling molecules" that activate immunity changes in a woman so her body accepts it.
But some apparently healthy sperm failed to activate these changes, leading to the suggestion that the female system can be "choosy" about its biological mate, she said. "It's rather like a two way dance," Robertson said.
"The male provides information that increases the chances of conception and progression to pregnancy, but the female body has a quality control system which needs convincing that his sperm is compatible.
"That's where the dance can go wrong with some couples - if the male signals are not strong enough, or if the female system is too 'choosy'." Robertson said sperm was more likely to fail if the woman had not previously been exposed to that man's semen for at least three months.
"We used to think that if a couple couldn't get pregnant, and the man's semen test was normal, the problem lay with woman. But it appears this is not always the case," Robertsion said.
The researchers plan to continue their work, which they hope will lead to improved treatments for infertility and miscarriages. The research trial has primarily been on mice and pigs, but Robertson said there was some indication that it will have the same or similar effect on human females.
"At the moment we've done lots of work on mice and pigs and we've done a little bit of work with human cells and we've found if we put seminal flued on cells in vitro that we get the same kind of changes in human cells.
We also have a little bit of preliminary work from people showing or suggesting that the same things are going to occur in real in vitro situations. " she said.
She further commented that this discovery could be extremely important from an evolutionary perspective, because it means the female body has the ability to decide when the time is right for pregnany.

Asia Cup Cricket - @ Sri Lanka Final

FOR THE CROWN OF ASIA
India Desperate To End 15-Year Wait

Dambulla: Pushed to the backfoot by Sri Lanka in the league phase of the Asia Cup, India are looking to hit back against the bosts in the match that matters the most - the final - at the Rangiri Dambulla interantional cricket stadium here on Thursday.
The Indians are smarting from the humiliating loss on Tuesday. They did try to experiment with the team's composition in that dress rehearsal match and suffered.
Now, as the momentum has shifted towards the Lankans, MS Dhoni's men will try to make amends and take home the trophy which has stayed away from their hands for 15 years now.
Harbhajan Singh, hero of the win against Pakistan, will be back in the team along with pacer Ashish Nehra to bolster the bowling attack led by Zaheer Khan.
Praveen Kumar and Ravinder Jadeja are the other two expected to play on Thursday. The team management is reportedly pleased with Jadeja's bowling but they want runs from his bat too.
As for India batting, Dinesh Karthik, who has come in for injured Virender Sehwag, will open wiht Gautam Gambhir who is expected to once provede the foundation for the later batsman to capitalise upon, Gambhir, who failed to get a big score in the last league match, must be hungry for a big knock now. He has looked in good form and the team would be looking to ride on a Gauti special.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma would be under pressure to deliver and if they get going, Dhoni and Suresh Raina's job would become that much easier.
Dhoni's dismissal in the last match made a huge difference to the team, which succumbed to Ferveez Maharoof's guile on Tuesday, The Indian skipper is aware that he has a key role to play in the middle overs.
The Sri Lankans will start as the favourites. They mostly are when they play at home. As for the statistics. Lanka have won the last two Asia Cups and are expected to make it a hat-trick in front of the home crowd. It's a tall order for India but they would also take heart in another piece of statistic: they are the only team to have got a hat-trick of Asia Cup title wins.
