Akshaye Khanna - SULKING

Colour me green

The grapevine says that Akshaye Khanna, who has always been a recluse, is getting more and more into his shell. The only two people this talented actor enjoys spending time with are his best friend Anil Kapoor and producer Rajat Rawail, who is making No Problem. Other than that, Akshaye,it seems is a tough cookie to deal with. Sources say he reportedly refused to pose for some publicity material of his film Aakrosh with Ajay Devgn and Hipasha Basu because he was sulking.
Some say Akshaye reportedly had payment issues with his producers and so he kept Ajay and Bipasha waiting. It's strange that Akshaye should be sulking with Ajay because both actors have worked together wonderfully in the past (Remember Deewangee?). And, they're actually quite pally. It seems hard to believe that one delayed cheque would drive a wedge between friends. Let's hope all this is more gossip than truth.

Humanity's wiiled contact with aliens,.....

Humanity's willed contact with aliens, Stephen Hawking warns, could mean devastation

The scientist has a point

When one of the world's leading cosmologists delivers his considered opinion on something intrinsically connected to his area of expertise, it pays to sit up and pay attention. The first part of Stephen Hawking's argument - that some where in the universe, alien life is certain to exist - is really not problematic at all.
To believe that in a universe with trillions of stars, life has evolved on just one planet would be an act of monstrous, misguided anthropocentriusm. And that leads to the second part of Hawking's argument. If we have not been able to effectively explore even our soar system, What makes us so eater to find life on other planets, and is it reasonable to search for it? answers, in order, are 'misguided optimism' and 'no'.
For once, ironically, hollywood might beright on this issue. While the numerous alien invasion movies it has churned out over the decades might be over the top and entirely lacking in coherence in many instances, their basic premise holds true - what reason do we have for assuming that any alien life we come into contact with will be well disposes to us? If we do find more developed alien life forms - or they find us - they are farmore likely to perceive us as alien elements in their environment and react accordingly. And if they have technical capabilities more advanced  than humanity, it could be cortains for us.
As Hawking says, we need only look at ourselves to rrealise the likelihood of such a scenario. Our history is littered with the bones of conquered peoples. In any contact between two alien groups, uncertainty and resultant hostility are always likely to be the dominant factors, with the more powerful group trying to exploit the weaker.

Humanity's wiiled contact with aliens,.....

Humanity's willed contact with aliens, Stephen Hawking warns, could mean devastation

Don't stop reaching out

We're not alone, suggests celebrated scientist Stephen Hawking. The universe has 100 billion galaxies, so it's logical to expect life to exist out there. True Given that a single galaxy contains hundreds of millions of stars, we can scarcely cling to an inflexible belief in the earth's monopoly on life. But it's harder to support Hawking's idea that we earthlings souldn't try to contact extraterrestrials.
Human nature, he argues, is a clue that visitors from outer space may be hostile. If men have fought, looted and plundered down history, aliens too may be resource-seeking raiders. We should, therefore, lie low rather than court devastation by encountering space nomads on possible missions of inter-galactic conquest and colonisation.
Hawking's position is deeply problematic. Pursuit of knowedge is science's defining core. This quest bears risks that can't always be pre-assessed. Abiding optimism is yet the basis of the scientific enterprise, not paralysing fear. Science means pushing frontiers-from particle physics to space probes-and space may not even be the final frontier. Seeing everything in their own image is a peculiar-and dangerous-proclivity humans need to overcome. To believe aliens will be a mirror image of man-that too, of his darker side-is to lean on an anthropcentrism that has no scientific basis, Indeed, the earth's biodiversity itself suggests the universe may bear life in multifarious forms.
Even if intelligent aliens exist and do resemble us, it's hubris to think they couldn't have superior social and moral systems based on civilised values like non-violence and harmony. Why should they necessarily be evil rather than good? The point is simple. Aliens may come with fangs bared. Or they may come in peace. If we-being true to the best in the human spirit-don't reach out, we'll never know, will we?

Chiled Care - Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis a childhood
ailment that strikes later?

Washington: Osteoporosis, long considered as a disease of the elderly, could actually e a pediatric ailment which surfaces later in life, says a study.
"While the importance of calcium nutrition throughout childhood and adolescence is well recognized, our work suggests that calcium nutrition of the neonate may be of greater importance to lifelong bone health due to its programming effects on mesenchymal stem cells," Dr Chad Stahl from the North Carolina State University, said.
"It also points to a potential paradigm shift in which health professionals might want to begin thinking about osteoporosis not so much as a disease of the elderly, but instead as a pediatric disease with later onset," said Stahl.
Stahl and his team studied the nutritional regulation of growth and development for which they used neonatal pig as a surrogate for the human infant. The team bottle-fed 12 piglets a calcium-rich diet and another 12 piglets a calcium deficient diet during the first 18 days life.
In both the groups, the team found no differeces in terms of blood markers of calcium status and growth, but there was a marked difference in bone density and strength such that the calcium-deficient piglets were compromised.
An analysis of the bone marrow tissue showed that many of the calcium-deficient piglets' cells appeared to have already been programmed to become fat cells instead of bone-forming osteoblast cells.
As per the research, fewer osteoblast cells in early life may lead to a reduced ability for bones to grow and repair throughout the remainder of life, thus suggesting that early calcium nutrition may have more impact than earlier thought.

make men last

The drug, taken one to three hours
before intercourse, works by altering
seratonin levels in the brain. This
helps a man to have more control over
his moment of climax

London: The first pill proven to prevent premature ejaculation
is about to launch in the United kingdom.
The drug, taken one to three hours before intercourse, works by altering seratonin levels in the brain, which helps a man to have more control over his moment of climax. The drug, Priligy has been shown to make men last three times as long.
However, it is expensive at Euro 76 for a pack of three Prillgy 30mg tablets. Priligy, which is available for men aged 18 to 64, is already in the markets of some European countries. It will be sole exclusively online, for private prescription only.
The drug can't be used after boozing as this increases the risk of side effects. Men will be able to get a private prescription for Prillgy following an online consultation t "Lloyds-pharmacy.com
It could prove even more popular than the anti-impotence drug Viagra, which has been taken by around 35 million men since it was launched a decade ago.For while impotence tends to affect men later in life, premature ejaculation can be a problem at any age.
"Prilligy has the potential to do as much for men's sixual health as Viagra," the Sun quoted Nitin Makadia, head of male sexual health at Lloyds-pharmacy, as saying.
"It will give sufferers a chance to improve the quality of their relationships and their general well being. :It has been well received by men elsewhere in Europe and we are really pleased to be bringing this treatment to the UK. Some men are understandably reluctant to discuss the problem with their GP so we are removing this barrier to treatment,"Makadia added.

A STILL FROM MAGHADHEERA

Maghadheera in Tamil

Telugu superstar Ram Charan Jeja's mega blockbuster in Telugu Maghadheera is going to be partially re-shot and dubbed in Tamil as Mannathi Mannan, which also happens to be the title of a 1960 MGR smash hit.
Leading Tamil producer Kalaipuli S Thanu, who has purchased the dubbing rights, will be re-shooting some of the scenes to ensure the new version suits the taste of Tamil audiences. A source said, "A separate comedy track will be shot. Vivekh is likely to do it, though nothing has been confirmed. We are also planning to re-shoot Sri Hari's scenes with a Tamil actor." The trouble is that it would be very difficult to rebuild the sets and recreate the grandeur and richness of the original.
The idea seems to be that if the dubbed version of Arundathi, without any re-shoot, could work big time in Tamil Nadu, Mannathi Mannan, with better graphics and special effects, could work even better with its title value. The buzz is that Ram Charan Teja will dub in his own voice. Keeravani's music will certainly be a plus for the film.

Anushka's mother stays with her in Mumbai.
