STUDY - FOR Homo Sapiens

Not just Neanderthals,
there's X-men in us too

Humans Have Mated With Multiple Homo Species

London: A new study has found that Neanderthals weren't theonly other Homo species early homo sapiens mixed with.

Joao Zilhao at the University of Bristol, UK, suggests Homo sapiens migrated from Africa to meet and interbred with other Homo species that have now become extinct. Swedish biologist Svante Svante Paabo's team at the Max Ploanck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, found the first evidence of interbreeding. They reportedlast week that the genome of humans today is roughly 1 to 4% Neanderthal.
The fact that all non-Africans have this percentage, suggests that homo sapiens and Neanderthals interbred sometime between 100,000 and 45,000 years ago, after the first humans left Africa but before they split into regional populations.
Jeffrey Long at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque presented results from nearly 100 modern human populations at a meeting of the American Association for Physical Anthropologists. They found proof that Eurasians became genetically diverse by breeding with other Homo species after they left Africa, reports New Scientist.
Also, they observed a spike in genetic diversity in Indo-Pacific peoples, dating to around 40,000 years ago, Again, it's unlikely the diversity came from Homo sapiens interbreeding with Neanderthals, as the latter never travelled tht far south.
In March, Paabo's team reported the discovery of DNA from a homin in that is probably neither human nor Neanderthal that lived 50,000 to 30,00 years ago, in a cave in southern siberia. They dubbed the creature X-woman, and sequencing machines are already decoding its genome, says Paabo's colleague Ed Green of the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Green does not dismiss the idea that X-women or its kind have bred with humans.

Bowlers set up win for England
SL Struggle As Collingwood's Boys March Into Title Round

St.Lucia: Sri Lanka's plans of derailing free-flowing England with a blistering assault at the top backfired on Thursday, in the first semifinal here on Thursday. Electing to bat, with a broad grin on his face, captin Kumar Sangkarra must have to attack the English bowlers and push themselves for a daunting target.
But disciplined bowling, backed by razor-sharp fielding, and overcast conditions, made sure that they could only muster 128 for six England cantered to the target in 16 overs with seven wickets in band as, ironically, the sky cleared up and paved the way for a perfect batti9ng reply.
Craig Kieswetter and Michael Lumb provided the ideal platform, raising a brisk 68. Kevin Pietersen, in his new role as father, completed the chase with amazing ease, smashing his way to 42. They await the winners in the other semifinal between Australia and Pakistan. Lanka opened with the spinners, hoping to exploit England's weakness against turn: Dilshan and mystery tweaker Mendis, however, didn't pose any danger on a pitch that had eased out. The ball came nicely on to the bat, making their task tougher.
Sangakarra rotated his bowlers sharply but they just didn't effect the early break through that is so vital while defending a small total. Malinga picked up the first wicket in the ninth over. it was too late. Perera helped himself to two as England seemed in a bit of a hurry.

Kalki Koechlin - READ ON

Kalki and Anurag's bookish ways!

Kalki Koechlin and boyfriend Anurag Kashyap have many common interests apart from films. One of them is books. Both of them are voracious readers and their home is a proof of that.
The two have full-length, wall-to-wall, built-in book shelves boasting of as many books as can be filled in without earning the official title of a library. But while Kalki stocks up her books in one end of the room, Anurag's collection is stocked up on the wall facing Kalki's 'book-wall facing Kalki's because they don't share a common taste in the genre of books they read. "I enjoy reading all sorts of books, but tend to avoid dark thrillers.
Anurag's, however, digs thrillers -- crime, psychological, medical, you name it. I enjoy books on films and stories that inspire or stir something within me. our taste in books is one of the few things that Anurag and I can never agree upon," says the Dev D actress.
