SL Struggle As Collingwood's Boys March Into Title Round
St.Lucia: Sri Lanka's plans of derailing free-flowing England with a blistering assault at the top backfired on Thursday, in the first semifinal here on Thursday. Electing to bat, with a broad grin on his face, captin Kumar Sangkarra must have to attack the English bowlers and push themselves for a daunting target.
But disciplined bowling, backed by razor-sharp fielding, and overcast conditions, made sure that they could only muster 128 for six England cantered to the target in 16 overs with seven wickets in band as, ironically, the sky cleared up and paved the way for a perfect batti9ng reply.
Craig Kieswetter and Michael Lumb provided the ideal platform, raising a brisk 68. Kevin Pietersen, in his new role as father, completed the chase with amazing ease, smashing his way to 42. They await the winners in the other semifinal between Australia and Pakistan. Lanka opened with the spinners, hoping to exploit England's weakness against turn: Dilshan and mystery tweaker Mendis, however, didn't pose any danger on a pitch that had eased out. The ball came nicely on to the bat, making their task tougher.
Sangakarra rotated his bowlers sharply but they just didn't effect the early break through that is so vital while defending a small total. Malinga picked up the first wicket in the ninth over. it was too late. Perera helped himself to two as England seemed in a bit of a hurry.
