Health Issue: For Anxiety

Anxiety over finances likely
to influence mental health

London: Many workers have sought medical advice for stress and anxiety following the recession, says a UK survey, The survey of 2,050 workers found that the post recession period has seen an increase in stress levels and mental health deterioration due to work pressures and job security worries.

Seven percent said they were prescribed medicines to help them cope. Many have had overtime cut, worked longer hours, or worried about job security. MIND believes mental health issues will soon become the biggest cause of work-related absence.
Nine per cent had been to their GP as a direct result of pressure related to the financial squeeze, and 7% were prescribed medicines like antidepressants to help them cope. One in five said work stress had made them physically ill, and one in four had been reduced to tears at work because of unmanageable pressure. HEALTH ISSUE: SHORT CUTS

Urban pollution increases
blood pressure: Study

People who live in cities with higher levels of particle air pollution tend to have higher blood pressure, a new study has claimed. Researchers at the University of Duilsbur-Essen, Germany, looked at 5,000 people and found long-term exposure to air pollution increased blood pressure, even  when other key factors were considered.
"This finding points out that air pollution does not only trigger life threatening events like heart attacks and strokes, but that it may also influence the underlying processes, which lead to chronic cardiovascular diseases," lead author Dr. Barbara Hoffman was quoted as saying by Live Science.

Laptops, iPads play havoc with sleep:

Using a laptop or an iPad just before going to bed can turn you into an insomniac, say American researchers. The scientists have discovered that devices that emit bright lights confuse human brains and sleep patterns, deceiving our minds that it is still the risk of insomnia. Reading a book or watching television, on the other hand is much less stressful. Human brains are biologically wired to be awake when the sun to stop secreting the hormone called melatonin that makes us sleepy.

HEALTH ISSUE: Winning Mates

'Fights over women made men's skulls, jaws thicker'

Washington: Wining mates in early human history was dependent on sheer physical prowess, not attractiveness.

"There is sexual competition in many species, including humans," said David Puts, assistant professor of biological anthropology. For men, it appears that physical competition among males was more important, similar to many of the apes in using male competition to determine access to mates, the winning male choosing the women he wants.
Men are far more aggressive than women, and approximately 30% of men in small-scale for aging communities die violently. The main sticking point with human male competition  is that male humans do not possess inherent weapons, which Puts explains by saying that men don't have them, but they make them such as bows and arrows.
Other male traits also seem to imply competition. Males have thicker jawbones, which may have come from men hitting each other and the thickest boned men surviving. Competition may explain why males have more robust skulls and brow ridges than women.
Species that live on the ground or the sea floor have more intense mating competitions because there are only two dimensions to defend, unlike in air or water. Some insects that live in tunnels or burrows exhibit the most intense competition because it is impossible for the other male to get to the females except through the defender. "Things are different for us now in many ways," said Puts.

HEALTH ISSUE: Lady Macbeth effect?

Lady Macbeth effect? Washing
hands cleanses the mind too

Washington: Washing our hands can cleanse us from traces of past decisions, and rid us of the need to justify them, says a new study.

To experiment this new theory, scientists Spike W S Lee and Norber Schwarz, affiliated with the U-M Institute for Social Research and the Ross School of Business in addition to the department of psychology conducted study amongst undergraduate students.
The students were offered to pick 10 out of 30 CDs and rank them in order of their preference.Later, the experimenter offered them a choice between their fifth-and sixth ranked discs as a token of appreciation. Following that choice, participants completed a seemingly unrelated product survey of liquid soap. Half of them merely examined the bottle before answering while the others tested the soap by washing their hands. After completing a filler task, participants were asked to rank the 10 CDs again.
"People who merely examine the soap bottle dealt with their doubts about their decision by changing how they saw the CDs: As in hundreds of earlier studies, once they had made a choice, they saw the chosen CD as much more attractive than before and the rejected CD a much less attractive.
"But hand washing eliminated this classic effect. Once participants had washed their hands, they no longer needed to justify their choice when they ranked the CDs the second time around,"Schwarz said.
The researchers replicated the findings by conducting a similar study using jars of fruit jams and antiseptic swipes, Which replaced the CDs and the soap, respectively. They found that washing hands can cleanse people from traces of past decisions.
