Skinny mannequins make men vulnerable?

Eating disorder campaigners have criticised a mannequin manufacturer for bringing out a superskinny male model that they say could encourage vulnerable men to starve themselves.
Next month Rootstein, a British firm, will unveil its Young and Restless collection, which includes a mannequin with a 35in chest and a 27in waist, 11in smaller than the average British man.
The company says the mannequins were modelled on teenage boys who were not anorexic, but were perfect for modelling the skinny jeans and slim tailoring made popular by stars such as Russell Brnad. But eating disorder charity Beat said more men were suffering from anorexia and bulimia, and that the mannequins portrayed an unrealistic and unattainable image.
It said: "We are certainly aware of more males seeking help for their eating problems and it is recognised that they are more likely to develop an eating disorder as a result of trying to achieve a certain body shape and size.
"Men nowadays are subject to the same insecurities around their body and self-image as women are. Unrealistic images in the fashion world - such as these mannequins - can lead to low self-esteem in often young people."
Kevin Arpino, creative director at Rottstein, who designed the Young and Restless range, rejected any suggestion that his mannequins could fuel eating disorders. "It is a collection dictated by current fashion trends for skinny jeans and very tight tailoring, as seen everywhere from Topman to Gucci. None of the boys we used (as models for the mannequins) were remotely anorexic. They just teenagers - the oldest one was 20, I think - so they were pubescent really. It's a trend."
He said the measurements for last season's mannequins were bigger, with a 38in chest and 30in waist, but that there was increasing demand for smaller models.
Dov Charney, chief executive of youth clothing brand American Apparel, has said his firm struggled to find mannequins to fit his brand's clothes. "All the mannequins out there are these beefcakes, and we can't even fit our largest size on them," he was quoted as saying in New York magazine. According to the latest NHS statistics, the average British male takes a 38in waist trouser.

KP steers England Home

Bridgetown (Barbados): Kevin Pietersen's commanding, unbeaten 70 off 52 balls led England past Pakistan by six wickets with three balls remaining in the first World Twenty20 Super Eights match at Kensington Oval on Thursday.
Better hands in the field also proved the difference for England, who scored 148-4 to chase down Pakistan's 14-9 off 20 overs.
Pietersen hit two sixes and seven fours, and his match-winning single formalized the outcome that was more comfortable than it appeared. Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter laid the foundation for Pietersen with an opening partnership of 44 off 5.4 overs. Both made 25 but Saeed Ajmal dropped kieswetter twice and the left-handed Lumb once within the first five overs. Pakistan also put down two more catches.
Once Lumb was stumped off Ajmal's offspin and Kieswetter caught at long-off from Abdul Razzaq, Pietersen was the dominant batsman. He shared a third-wicket partnership of 60 with captain Paul Collingwood, who made 16 before falling to Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi.
In contrast to Pakistan, England's sharpness in the field kept Pakistan in check through out its innings. Pietersen held a breathtaking catch on the midwicket boundary, a new meters in front of disbelieving spectators in the Greenidge and Haynes Stand, to dismiss the threatening Umar Akmal for 30.
Left-handed opener Salman Butt topscored for Pakistan with 34 off 26 balls.

Akshay Kumar: COMEDY KING

Comic bug!

It's been quite some time since we saw Akshay Kumar show his signature high-octane action moves on the big screen. Never mind that he's been dishing out doses of action on the small screen for his commercials.
Though his fans are missing seeing the Khiladi's high-on-adrenaline-rush acts, Akshay Kumar himself is not too keen on getting back in the action groove anytime soon, Rather, the action star - probably encouraged by the response his comedies have garnered at the box office - is intent on doing light-hearted entertaining films.
Akki, however, does admit that he won't mind indulging his reflexes for action-comedies. "I think comedy is as challenging as an action film. But making people laugh is what I am enjoying immensely. So, hard-core action will have to wait for a while. But yes, action can never cease to be a part of me, so action comedies are high on my to-do list," says Akshay, whose forthcoming films include Tees Maar Khan, Patiala House and Khatta  Meetha that takes a hard look at the road mafia, with a comical twist. With his hands full of comic capers, it will be quite a while before Akshay goes back to his action turf.

Neha Dhupia - ACTION STREAK

Neha Dhupia acting tough

Science - Marijuana can use for Medical

Washington DC approves
medical use of marijuana

Washington: The District of Columbia Council approved a measure on Tuesday that would allow people with certain chronic illnesses to obtain medcertain chronic illnesses to obtain medical marijuana from a handful of dispensaries regulated bythe city.

The 13-member Council voted unanimously to allow doctors to recommend marijuana for people who are infected with HIV, as well as people with glaucoma, cancer or a "chronic and lasting disease."
The legislation permits Mayor Adrian M Fenty to establish up to eight dispensaries where patients could receive two ounces of marijuana a month. The measure gives the mayor the option of raising the amount to four ounces eith out further council action.
Some doctors say marijuana helps relieve nausea, vomiting, certain AIDS symptoms and some side effects of chemotherapy. For glaucoma patents, the drug is believed to help lower eye pressure.
The measure, which Fenty is expected to sign into law, thrusts the debate over medical marijuana into the hands of Congress and the White House, which must decide within 30 days whether to allow the city to proceed with the plan. To block the law from taking effect, the House and the Senate must pass a joint resolution and President Obama must approve it. If federal law makers do not intervene, Washington will join California and 13 other stated that allow residents to use marijuana for medical purposes.

HEALTH CARE: Walking up to Risks

Just one sleepless night can wreak havoc
Lack Of Shuteye Hampers Body's Ability To Use Insulin Tp Process Sugar In Bloodstream: Study

London: Just one sleepless night can hamper the body's ability to use insulin to process sugar in the bloodstream, according to a study which scientists say might help explain why diabetes is on the rise.

Researchers said their findings suggest it may be no coincidence that while sleep duration has shortened in western societies in the past decade there has also been an increase in cases of "insulin resistance" and adult-onset diabetes.
"Our findings show a short night of sleep has more profound than previously appreciated," said Esther Donga, director of Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, who led the study published on Wednesday.
Type 2 diabetes is caused by the body's inability to adequately use insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, to control glucose sugar produced from food. Sugar levels rise and can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and major arteries.
The disease, linked to poor diet and lack of exercise, is reaching epidemic levels. An estimated 180 million people now suffer from diabetes around the world.
Previous studies have found that several nights of poor sleep can result in impaired use of insulin, but Donga said this was the first study to examine the effects of only a single bad night's sleep.
The Dutch scientists examined nine healthy people once after a night of eight hours sleep and once after a night of just four hours. The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, showed that partial sleep restriction during a single night reduced some types of insulin sensitivity by 19 to 25%.
"Our data indicate that insulin sensitivity is not fixed in healthy (people), but depends on the duration of sleep in the preceding night," Donga wrote in the study."In fact it is tempting to speculate that the negative effects of multiple nights of shortened sleep on glucose tolerance can be reproduced, at least in part, by just one sleepless night."
A study by US scientists published last year found that people who slept less than six hours a night were 4.5 times more likely to develop abnormal blood sugar readings in six years compared with those who slept longer. Experts say adults typically need between seven and nine hours sleep a night.
