MASTER SURGEON
Dr. Mohamed Rela, a World -renowned liver transplant surgeon
Transplantation (the most common method followed in the world) is done. Also, because it only needs part of a complete liver, the rest can be used to heal another person who suffers from a liver disease."
Dr. Rela, who is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having performed a successful liver transplantation in a five-day-old child, is among the very few surgeons in the world to have performed an Auxiliary Liver Transplantation. "Only about 100 such surgeries have been performed in the last 20 years, and I've performed half of them, "he says. The pride in his voice is overshadowed by his grief that more have not been performed. He offers several reasons for many popular hospitals choosing to perform the usual Orthtopic Liver Transplantation even if the patient qualifies for an Auxiliary Liver Transplantation. "The latter demands more expertise from the surgeon, " he explains. "Also, many patients are unaware of the advantages of the latter surgery. "To substantiate his point, Dr. Rela provides a statistic. "Almost 80% of all patients who undergo a liver transplantation qualify for an Auxiliary Liver Transplantation. "he says. "However only 5% of them undergo this surgery, owing to lack of medical expertise in many hopitals and more importantly, the lack of awreness about this surgery. "
Dr. Rela, who performed the country's first-ever Auxiliary Liver Transplantation at Global Hospitals recently in September, 2009, has now taken a sabbatical from Kings College Hospital, London, and will be in the country for the next two years in a bid to improve the situation in the country. "If nothing else, at least that patients have an extra option for the next two years, will improve, significantly, the quality of surgeries performed, " he says. "The more competent surgeons in the country, the better the service. "
