Monday, July 26, 2010

Smart cookie

Deepika Padukone is currently in London for the car racing season. The Bollywood beauty is using her vacation time smartly. She is actually being paid to endorse the races, we hear, What's more, Deepika is expected to return to Mumbai for a short schedule of Break Ke Baad with Imran Khan and then fly back to London with John Abraham for Rohit Dhawan's Desi Boys. Incidentally, John is very high on Deepika. He thinks she is the perfect combination of beauty, brains and has just the right amount of aggression needed to be a topper. Guess John doesn't like the otherwise extra aggressive women who cross his path every other day.

INTELLIGENT CHOICE: Cheran

CHERAN'S PICK

When actor-director Cheran was recently asked to pick three films that had managed to impress him this summer, he chose Angadi Theru, Irumbu Kottai, Murattu Singam and Singam!
Explaining why he liked these films, he said, "angadi Theru is a realistic film by Vasantha balan. To capture realism through his camera's lens. he actually visited the crowded Ranganathan street with a hand camera! He's dared to make a hard hitting film and the movie has come out really well. Irrumbu Kottai... is a complete entertainer.
Chimbudevan's concept on coboys is interesting. He has put in a lot of effort to hunt for proper locations and paid great attention to minute details. For instance. Lawrence's shadow performing his acts even before he does them on screen is something no one would have thoughof! Singam is a proper masala film. The film is a potboiler and Hari seems to have come up with an idea that's definitelyout of the box. That's precisely why i liked these three movies."
Well,Cheran. It seems, has valid reasons for liking or disliking films!

COUNTER PUNCH: Shriya Saran

SHRIYA'S SMILING!
The actress has begun tweeting on a microblogging site to counter a stalker....

Shriya Saran has started tweeting officially, after an imposter, posing as the celebrity actress, made life difficult for her. Says an exasperated Shriya, "This person who was using my name and photograph to post tweets made them look like they had been posted by me. He was virtually a stalker as he was constantly monitoring my movements, which, after a point, got me scared."
The impostor, the actress says, seemed to know every moment of hers and was constantly tailing her. And to make it as authentic as possible, he even uploaded pictures of any public function she attended immediately on the micro-blogging site.
However, what made it scarier for Shriya was that the faker started invading her privacy and also posted a few of his thoughts as hers! This created quite a few problems for the actress, as even her own friends thought that it was she who was making those statements through that particular site.
Finally, a close friend came to Shriya's rescue and asked her to start her own account and start tweeting. this, the actress thought, was perhaps the best way to beat the counterfeiter at his own game, as it would be difficult to stop such fakes legally.Says a relieved Shriya, "Now, I'm glad that I have started my own account and have a real ID.I hope this will stop the stalker from misusing my name."
This incident is proof of the few phenomenon that has fakes posting as real celebrities' on social networking sites. Due to this menace, many high profile celebs like Trisha, Genelia, Dhanush, Simbu and Mohanlal have started tweeting.
Says Hemalatha, a socialogist working in an IT firm, "I find that a lot of youngsters are hooked on to faking celebs on social networking sites. They get a treamendous kick out of it. especiallyhey find theyhave nearly 25,000 plus followers, which they can never dream of getting using thaeir real identities, Their job of tracking a celebrity is made easy. as celebs today are constantly under the media glare."

News: KEEPING AN EYE

This remote censors TV shows for kids

London: Want to stop your children from watching adult TV programmes in your absence? Let a new remote do the work for you.

Yes scientists have designed the TV remote fitted with sensors which can identify individual family members, offering personalised viewing options - and restracting according to the New Scientists.
In fact, a team at Arizona State University in Tempe, led by Magdiel Galan, at Intel Labs has modified an ordinary TV remote to design the new remote with sensors to measure the way it was held as volunteers channel surfed.
For one session in every five, the volunteers identified themselves by entering a PIN. The idiosyncrasies in the way people used the remote could then be used to identify them in the rest of sessions with 60 to 90% accusracy, suggesting a way to personalise access to content.
The scientists are to present their new device at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence conference in Atlanta, Georgia, next week.

HEalth Issue: Knocking out a gene

Knocking out a gene makes female mice 'gay'

Washington: Knocking out a gene called fucose mutarotase (FucM) from female mice actually makes them masculine-they refuse to let males mount them, and attempt copulation with other female mice.

The mammalian fucose mutarotase enzyme is known to be involved in incorporating the sugar fucose into protein. Researchers created the FucM mouse mutants in order to investigate the role of this enzyme in vivo. Chankyu Park worked with a team of researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology any intriguingly gained some insight into the neurological basis of sexual preference.
The mutant female mice were healthy, and behaved normally towards young mice. However, when approached by male mice, they would not adopt the sexually receptive "lordosis" position. In addition, they lost interest in investigating male urine, unlike normal females, and would attempt to mount other females. The study has been published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Genetics.

When the Moors Ruled in Europe

An insightful documentary into the prosperity Islam engendered in Europe during its glorious reign there.
