'Acupuncture, the best remedy for menstrual cramps'

ACUPUNCTURE

Hong Kong Acupuncture may be helpful in alleviating menstrual cramps, which affects up to half of all young women, an extensive review of past studies has found.

In a review of 27 studies that involved nearly 3,000 women, researchers from the Oriental Hospital at Kyung Hee University Medical Centre in south Korea found that acupuncture may be more effective than drugs or herbal medicines. "There is convincing evidence on the effectiveness of using acupuncture to treat pain as it stimulates the production of endorphins and serotonin in the central nervous system," they wrote.
Endorphins are compounds produced naturally by the human body during exercise and excitement and they result in a feeling of well-being. Serotonin is a brain chemical. "Compared with pharmacological treatment or herbal medicine, acupuncture was associated with a significant reduction in pain," they added in their paper, which was published in the latest issue of the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Losing sleep? Insomnia can shrink brain

INSOMNIA CAN SHRINK BRAIN

WINKS OF WORRY: Chronic insomnia has been linked to lower grey matter density in areas that regulate the brain's ability to make decisions

Washington :Individual battling insomnia are losing outnon more than just sleep - they may be missing brain matter.

With the help of brain imaging, researchers have linked chronic insomnia to lower gray matter density in areas that regulate the brain's ability to make decisions and to rest, reports Discovery News. "The findings predict that chronic insomnia sufferers may have compromised capacities to evaluate the affective value of stimuli," said Ellemarijie Altena, lead author of the study from the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience.  "This could have consequences for other cognitive processes, notably - making," added Atena.

The study has been published in biological psychiatry. T o reach the conclusion, researchers compared the white and gray matter volumes of 24 older, chronic insomnia patients to 13 normal sleepers, and controlled for physical and psychiatric disorders that could also alter brain densities. Severe insomniacs exhibited the most extensive density loss, regardless of how long they had suffered from the disorder. However, the researchers are not yet able to pin down whether sleeplessness precedes gray matter loss or the other way around.

" We can't say what comes first: the lower gray matter density or the insomnia, but (the data) suggests that a low orbitofrontal gray matter density may be a risk factor to develop insomnia," said Altena, now a research associate at the Cambridge University Department of Clinical Neuro-sciences. " We only investigated older people, so follow - up studies at different ages could determine what comes first." By drawing attention to the neurological damage that sleep disorders can inflict, both Kramer and Altena hope this study and similar research will lead to more accurate and diverse treatment options for chronic insomnia.  ANI

TRICKS TO LOSE WEIGHT

LOSE WEIGHT

It is possible to feel full on fewer calories. Here's how:

GO LOW
Lowering the energy density of your diet - the calories it contains per 100g - is an effective way to stay fuller for longer periods of time and thereby, lose the pounds. A study found that a low-fat, low-energy density diet is more effective for weight loss over one year, than a low-fat, high energy density diet.

DO THE MATHS

Calculate the energy density of a food by dividing the number of calories by the weight of the food: a sandwich with 360 calories that weighs 180g would have an energy density of 360/180=2. We should try to eat foods that have an energy density less than 1.5, only moderate amounts of foods with an energy density of 1.5-4 and only small amounts of food with a density of 4-9.

HAVE A LIQUID LUNCH

A low- energy density diet can be achieved by eating foods with high water content.

INCREASE YOUR PROTEIN

Protein curbs hunger better than curbs or fat.  So, when you make a sandwich, go for the thinner bread and increase the tuna or chicken filling.

FILL UP ON FIBRE

Fibre absorbs water, increasing the feeling of fullness. So, eat whole-meal bread, wholewheat pasta and brown rice.
