'Beer is good for bones'

London: Beer is a significant source of dietary silicon, a key ingredient for increasing bone mineral density, and hence a moderate consumption may help fight osteoporosis.
An international team has carried out the study and found that beer is rich in silicon-a mineral found in barley, a key ingredient in the beverage - which survives the brewing process as orthosilicic acid. And,according to the study, it's silicon which helps strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis, a disease that is characterised by low bone mass as well as the deterioration of bone tissue.
Lead researcher Charles Bamforth of California University was quoted by the British media as saying, " Beer containing high levels of malted barley and hops are richest in silicon. It's the husk of barley that's rich in this element. While most remains during brewing, significant quantities are none the less extracted into wort and survive into beer." PTI

'UNKNOWN FLU-LIKE VIRUS TRIGGERS APPENDICITIS'
London: Doctors have for long wondered what triggers appendicitis. Now, a new study has claimed that the condition may be caused by a yet unknown flu-like virus and it may notn require an emergency surgery.
An team led by Edward Livingston, chief of GI/ endocrine surgery at UT Southwestern, believes that a link to viral infection could explain why appendicitis appears to be more common in certain years and during the summer.Appendicitis is the most common reason for emergency surgery.
The scientists examined American hospital admissions for appendicitis, influenza and gastric viral infections over 36 years. Their analysis showed appendicitis peaked in the years 1977,1981,1984,1987,1994 and 1998. That clustering pattern suggested outbreaks were typical of viral infections. PTI

Blood test can tell fetal sex in early pregnancy

A new study found that is safe to do a blood test in early pregnancy. This is highly accurate at determining the sex of the fetus. it supports using the test in cases where fetal sex is important in detecting or managing certain inherited medical conditions
Normally, parents who want to know the sex of their baby before it's born find out through ultrasound done in the second trimester.
However, a blood test that can be done early in pregnancy is highly accurate at determining the sex of the fetus, a new study has found.The test is important, write the authors of the study, because in some cases, there are medical reasons to determine fetal sex earlier. This factor has traditionally meant invasive tests, like amniocentesis, which carry with it a small risk of miscarriage.
Consequently, maternal blood tests that pick up certain markers of fetal sex have been developed and have been put into use in recent years.
So far, research has shown that the accuracy of these tests vary widely, depending on the methods used.In this latest study, published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers in the Netherlands found that the testing method used at their centre was 100% accurate in determining fetal sex among nearly 200 pregnant women.
Part of what's new about the findings is that they show the effectiveness of blood testing as it is done in routine practice-and not just in the research setting, Ellen van der Schoot, of Sanquin Research Amsterdam, said. The study does not discuss costs, nor when the test might be available to the general public. Even though, the findings of the new study support using the tests in cases where fetal sex is important in detecting or managing certain inherited medical conditions.
For example, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a genetic disorder that causes girls to develop abnormal external genitalia and male-like characteristics like a deep voice and excessive body hair. REUTERS

THERE is so much being made of the pitch at the Eden Gardens that however it turns out, whatever its nature and behaviour over the next five days, it is bound to be a let down. As for me, all I am expecting is a typical, low bounce surface that will not excite anyone too much, It will again take good cricket on part of one side and poor cricket from the other for a result to come about.
Under these circumstances, I think it is time to lay to rest this theory about the Indians needing a left hander in the middle order - a slot earlier filled by Sourav Ganguly and later by the now injury-hit Yuvraj singh - to counter the negative line that is bound to be adopted again by left-arm spinner Paul Harris. He may still be able to exploit the bowlers' footmarks, yes, but the lack of bounce will not allow him too much leeway and batsmen will not be that wary or defensive as was the case in Nagpur,. In any case, a left-hander when up against the ball coming in from the rough and without the luxury of being able to pad the ball away will have it that much tougher.
Besides all that, the form showed by S Badrinath in the opening test warrants another chance and so there should be no question of Suresh Raina replacing him for now In the batting lne-up I would expect a straight swap, VVS Laxman coming on for Saha and that is it.
Laxman's return is bound to be a big boost for the Indians but they will have to play out of their sins to stop this South African side. Rarely have I seen a visiting side dominate an Indian side so and so it will take a lot to down them.

KOLKATA: With the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) flashing its 'sporting wicket' card every time talk of a 'turner' popped in the past few days, Team India skipper Mahendrs Singh Dhoni made sure on Satruday that everyone got the definition right.
"There has been to much emphasis on this (recently). A sporting wicket doesn't recessarily mean it has to have grass or bounce on it. It is one which holds a chanllenge... A turning track is challenge for the batsman and also requires the bowlers to give their best. " he told the media on Saturday, the evening of the crucial second Test against south Africa here.
"Every country has its own speciality. In South Africa and New Zealand we encounter wickets that have pace and bounce. Our speciality (in terms of wickets) has been that the ball turns and there is (also) bounce for the spinners. "he added for good measur.
While the Indian skipper made his stand clear on claiming 'home advantage' and that no country need be apologetic about it, his displeasure over the wicket provided at the Eden was evident. "I don't see it providing assistance to spinners in the first two days."
He is not overly bothered by the inexperience in the Indian middle-order. "Everybody is expected to do well. It's a dream come true for them but they have good performances in the domestic matches.
