THE CHEER IS BACK ON THE FACES OF THEATRE AND MULTIPLEX OWNERS AS THE LOCAL CRICKET TEAM SEEMS TO BE FACING A....
With a hat-trick of losses, the men in yellow certainly seem to have found the going tough this IPL. While the local team's abysmal performance on the cricket field has upset several die-hard fans. It's brought more than some cheer to Kollywood which has been bracing itself to battle the cricketing extravaganza.
Abirami Ramanathan is visibly happy with the developments and why not! "The IPL, has not affected movie business in Chennai at all, " he declares matter-of-factly, " Chennaiites are still going to films like they did before. "
Actor Jiiva is excited about the prospect of his Kacheri Aarambam, which released recently, to pick up post the poor showing by the men in yellow. "It (the IPL) seemed a big problem for me at the start, but now the local team's losses are proving to be a blessing in disguse, " he explains, "It'll surely increase businesses for Tamil films. But, it's also exam time for Chennai now. So, people might be a bit confused juggling between cricket, exams and films. "
According to the actor, cricket and films ae the only majot entertainment options for Chennaiites in this season. "And when one of them doesn't do well, it surely augurs well for the other, " he adds.
Agreeing with him is Meenakshisundaram, manager of a leading multiplex on the ECR> "Collections have been steady despite the craze for cricket in the city, " he says. "Weekend colloections have been expecially good, though there have been some close matches at the same time. "
However, cricket buff Sumitra Mani is sure that she'd venture nowhere hear a movie theatre till the conclusion of the IPL. "Yes, the local team might not be doing well but some of the rest of the games are still worth a watch, " she feels.
Ramanathanis a bit sceptical about Chennai's run in the rest of the tournament. He concludes. "Cricket is such an unpredictable game. There's a chance that the local team bounces back and improves their performance in the forthcoming games. But, irrespective of what happens, movie bustness will go on as usual "
