England Notch Up Tennis Scoreline To Make It Two Out Of Two Games
New Delhi: England nothed their second victory in Group B but had to battle hard throughout for a 6-4 verdict against south Africa in the Hero Honda hockey World Cup here on Tuesday.
Richard Mantell scored two off dragflicks-in the sixth and 57th minuts-to demonstrate England's growing provwess in penalty corners even as Rob Moore (23rd), Ashley Jackson (43rd) Nick Carlin (50th), Iain Mackay (51st) found the net in an extremely rewarding second half.
South Afreca opened the scoring in the ninth minute vis Marvin Harper who came good yet again in the 53rd. Lloyd Norris Jones (35th) and Thornton Mc Dade (67th) added to the tally.
The way South Africa started, it looked as if thy would either upstage England or make them sweat for victory. The goal in the sixth minute and the way south Africa used the flanks till the Zero angle was enough proof that they had done their homework before taking the pitch.
England were definitely in a spot of bother on a few occasions as they left a few gaping holes between the two 23-metre line for South Africa to operate. Sounth Africa obliged too with Julian Hykes on the flank and Marvin arper in the centre combining well to make intoads.
The trend continued even after England equalised off their first penalty corner.
England beefed up their midfield quite a bit at this point of time, with Ashley Jackson and James Tinadall cuting off anyu danger and pushing forward with resove. England went two0up soon when Rob Moore dispossessed south African Skipper Austin Smith but a quick counter by Lloyd in the 25th minute saw him enter the circle in a jiffy before aiming towards the goal.
