All through history there have been people who have made special efforts to help others. Some were rulers who tried to make their subjects' lives better. some a lot of money in business and spent it on setting up schools, libraries and hospitals. Movie stars, sporting heroes and other public figures have used their fame to draw the world's attention to disease or disasters and have worked to raise money to heop sufferers.
Mother Teresa born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu (1910-1997) in Poland, was a Roman Catholic nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work. for over forty years, she ministered to the needs of the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying people in Calcutta (Kolkata). As the Missionaries of Charity grew under Mother Teresa's leadership, they expanded their ministry to other countries. "Between 1948 and 1970, Mother Teresa's centres and colonies in Kolkata alone saved nearly 8,000 lives. By the 1970s she had become internationally famed as a humanitarian and advocate for the poor and helpless.
