DINOSAURS

Dinosaurs ruled the earth for about 160 million years. They appeared on the earth about 225 million years ago and died about 65 million years ago. The name dinosaur , which means terrible lizard, covers the whole group of these prehistoric reptiles. There are over 800 known species of dinosaurs, and more are found every year. They did not all live at the same time. When one species died out, another rose up to take its place. No human being has ever seen a real dinosaur, because they died long before the first humans appeared.

Finding dinosaurs
All that is known about dinosaurs has been learned from their fossils, which include preserved bone, teeth, eggs, nests, footprints and waste material. By studying the bones, scientists can tell how they supported the animal's muscles when the dinosur was alive. This enables them to work out the shape of the dinosur's body and also to understand how it walked and ran. Teeth, which are very hard, often suvive. from these, it is possible to say whether the animal was a plant-eater or a flesh-eater.
