Mumbai: Sachin Tendulkar scored an unbeaten 71 off 48 balls to help Mumjbai Indians register a seven-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders here on Monday.
Chasing a 156-run target in their stiplated 20 overs, MI wrapped the match in 18.3 overs. Chennai boy R Sathish contributed a crucial 21 off just 11 ball to provide adequate support to Tendulkar at the end. This was KKR's third consecitive loss.
Earlier, Chris Gayle notched up a stroke filled 75 in his first Indian Premier League appearance this year to power KKR to a competitive 155 for three.
After missing the previous tie against Rajasthan Royals in Ahmedabad due to flu, the West Indies skipper slipped into the groove smoothly during his 60-ball knock that included two sixes and seven fours, besides forging  two fruitful half century partnerships.
The left-handed Gayle, who missed KKR's first two ties because of his international commitments, gave the knight Riders a frlying start of 70 runs with skipper Sourav Ganguly, who made 31 in 34 balls.
After Ganguly's dismissal, Mumbai Indians bowlers got their act together to apply brakes for a while before Gayle opened up in his inimitable sytle in the company of Owais Shah (31 in 23 balls) to jgive the visitors a fighting total.
Gayle was out to the last ball of the innings, trapped LBW by Zaheer Khan, the most successful bowler with 2-27.
Opting to bat first, the Knight Riders Zoomed to 70 in 11 overs before the home team broke the opening stand when Harbhajan Singh cleanbowled Ganguly.
Gayle, who began promisingly before the home side became wise and did not give him room to play cut shots, and Owais Shah forged a partnership of 82 runs in 8.2 overs.
The Knight Riders began on a confident note with Gayle turning the first ball be gaced from the inconsistent Lasith Malinga to the fine leg fence for a boundary.
