UNFAVOURABLE CARDIOVASCULAR EFFECT

London: Here's some bad news for those who can't get out of bed without sipping a hot espresso- a single cup of the caffeinated drink is enough to damage your heart, a new study has claimed.

Italian researchers have carried out the study and found that the high amount of caffeine in a single espresso can have "unfavourable cardiovascular effects"-it cuts blood flow to the heart by more than a fifth. Decaffeinated coffee, in contrast, boost blood flow, the study has found.

A single espresso contains 130 mg of caffeine, compared to 75 mg in a cup of instant coffee. Filter coffee is estimated to contains around 120 mg per cup.

The researchers from the university of Palermo recruited 20 volunteers. They examined the blood flow of the subjects who drank a single espresso and compared it to a decaffeinated alternative.

The caffeinated variety narrowed blood vessels, cutting blood flow to the heart by an average of 22% within an hour. This is because caffeine acts to block a chemical which keeps blood vessels expanded.PTI

RICH BLOOD AFFECTS GROWTH OF BABIES

Washington: Women with high blood pressure and blood over -rich in red blood cells are more likely to give birth to babies who are too small or born too early, researchers in the Netherlands said.

Mothers who smoked or who did not take supplements correctly also were underweight or born too early, the study found-and these factors seem to affect the foetus during the first three months of pregnancy, before a women has had much prenatal care.

But early ultrasounds may help identify the babies moat at risk, the study suggests. Dr Dennis Mook-Kanamori and colleagues at Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam studied 1,631 pregnant women, doing ultrasound scans of their fetuses between 10 and 13 weeks gestation. Babies that were the smallest during this period of early, rapid growth were also more likely to be born early or to be underweight at birth, Mook-Kanamori's team reported.

But as they grew into toddlers, these babies tended to grow too fast - a pattern that can cause such children to become obese.

"Higher diastolic blood pressure and higher hematocrit levels were associated with a shorter crown to rump length," the researchers wrote. REUTERS

SWEET SCIENCE: Chocolates lower stroke risk

RICH IN FLAVONOIDS THAT SHIELD HEART

Toronto : Eating chocolate may lower your risk of a stroke, says an analysis of available, research.

Chocolate is rich in antioxidants called flavonoids, which may have a protective effect against stroke. A study found that eating chocolate may lower the risk of death after suffering a stroke. The analysis involved reviewing three studies on chocolate and stroke.

The second study found that 44,489 people who ate one serving of chocolate per week were

22% less likely to have a stroke than people who ate no chocolate.

Another study found that 1,169 people who ate 50 grams of chocolate once a week were 46%

less likely to die following a stroke than people who did not eat chocolate. Consuming flavonoids has been linked to heart benefits. The antioxidants help protect cells against damage that might come from environmental toxins.

" More research is needed to determine whether chocolate truly lowers stroke risk, or whether

healthier people are simply more likely to eat chocolate than others," said study author Sarah Sahib of McMaster University. IANS

Long Beach, California: Cabernet and chocolate are potent medicine for killing cancer, according to research presented here .

Red grapes and dark chocolate join blueberries, garlic, soy, and teas as ingredients that starve cancer, Angiogenesis Foundation head William Li said. "We are rating foods based on their cancer-fighting qualities,"Li said. " What we eat is really our chemotherapy three times day."

The Massachusetts-based foundation is identifying foods containing chemicals that choke off blood supplies to tumors, starving them to death. "There is a medical revolution happening all around us ". Li said. "It could impact on consumer education, food service, public health, and even insurance agencies".

About a dozen drugs are already in use to deprive tumors of blood supplies in a tactic called "anti-angiogenesis' The foundation also found that such properties of food melt away fat, which relies on blood flow to sustain itself. AFP

The evidence is strong enough that the National Institutes of Health soon will begin enrolling thousands of hypertension suffers in a major study to see if aggressive treatment-pushing blood pressure lower than currently recommended-better protects not just their hearts but their brains.AP

A new study in the US says that fluctuating blood glucose levels may affect decision - making.

Scientists XT Wang and Robert Dvorak from the University of South Dakota looked into how blood glucose levels affect our thinking about present and future rewards.

Participants in the study answered questions on whether they would prefer to receive a certain amount of money tomorrow or a larger amount of money at a later date. The subjects answered the questions before and after drinking either a regular soda that contained containing sugar or a diet soda.

It was seen that blood glucose levels might influence people's preferences for current versus later rewards. The volunteers who drank the regular sodas and thus had higher blood glucose levels were more likely to select receiving more money at a later date, while those who had diet sodas and had lower blood glucose levels were likely to opt for receiving smaller sums of money immediately.

These findings suggest an adaptive mechanism linking decision-making to metabolic cues, like blood sugar levels. The results show that when we have more energy available (higher blood glucose levels) we are likely to be more future-oriented.

On the other hand, having low energy, that is low blood glucose levels, may make an individual focus more on the present. Artificial sweeteners may alarm the body of imminent caloric crisis, causing increased impulsivity.

The authors conclude that if controlling blood glucose levels may influence our decisions for later versus current rewards, then "reducing the fluctuation in blood glucose may offer treatment of impulsive disorders, anorexia,drug addiction, and gambling addiction."ANI

Tamil film crews seem to be making the impossible possible. Recently, the crew of the Tamil film Thambikku Indha Ooru, stating Bharat, Sanaa Khan and Madalasa Sharma, shot an imporant sequence at Terminal three of the Change airport.

Saravanan, the producer of the film, claimed, "So far, no Asian film unit has been allowed to shoot at Terminal three. In fact, we had to struggle for almost 30 days to acquite permission to shoot at this terminl. "

Another highlight of the film will be its strnts. stunt co-ordinator Jimmy Lo, who has choreograpohed stunts in Jachie Chan's movies, had choregraphed the stunts in this film along with Indian stunt master Dinesh.

"The first thing Jimmy said before accepting this project was, 'I want to rest the person who will be performing the stunts in this film. I want to know if he will be able to perform the tasks I have for him. Also, I will not allow body doubles or ropes to be used in my stunts, and we ageed, "the producer pointed out.

JUNKIE ACT: Bipasha Basu

Finally, all speculations about the female lead in Rohan Sip-py's Dum Maro Dum has been put to rest. It's Bipasha Basu who will play the glamorous junkie opposite Telugu star Rana Daggubati in the film. The film'sremaining star cast had been finalised earlier Abhishek Bachchan, Pratick and Aditya Pancholi.

Teacting to reports that Bipasha 's character is modelled on the flower child that Zeenat Aman played in Dev Anand's Hare Tame Hare Krishna, Rohan said, " Zeenat Aman is my all-time favourite and i hold her in high esteem. There is no one who can be like her but yes, Bipasha has sex appeal and connects well with the audience. But the film has nothing to do with Hare Rama Hare Krishna,except for the fact that it has elements like gangsters, drugs and is set in Goa. " Shooting for the film starts in two weeks.

Bhavana,whose latest release was Aasal with Ajith, will soon play the female lead in a Kannada film titled Jackie. Says Bhavana, "After doing films in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu, I feel a sense of completeness now that I'm getting to work in a Kannada film. "So, it comes as a surprise when Bhavana sayus she hasn't watched any Puneet Rajkumar (the male lead) films yet. "But I know he's a big star in Sandalwood. I've also heard a lot about other Kannada heroes," she counters. About herrole in Jackie, Bhavana says, "I play a character called Lakshme. Thoughit's not an extraordinary role, I liked it, " says bhavana.

Says Suri, the director of the film, "I've watched Bhavana's Tamil films, Veyyil and Chithiram Pesuthadi in which she played an innocent girl. She was brilliant in both. S we thought she'd suit a local girl's character, we chose her. " He adds, "Moreover, we could get convenient dates from Bhavana, as our shoot will take place oly during summer."

Years of strenuous daning and doing breath-taking action for films like Krrish, Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar, that got the superstar every award xorth its metal, also left Hrithik with excruciating knee pain. and just before he was to start work on this home production, the actor found himself on crutches. ! I hadn't okayed a single script after Jodhaa Akbar, " says Hrithik. " I was sitting free with a bad knee which had crippled me for about six months. But the script of kites got my adrenaline pumping."

When he realised that he had to bare his torso in the film; he panicked. "Because of my knee. I hadn't been doing cardio and had gained weight, "says the actor famous for his ripped body. "And if I was to appear bare-chested, my fans would expect nothing but perfection from me. so I devised new ways to shed the fat. Not being able to run, jump or skip, I used to just pick up a five pound dumbbell and do arm curves for 45 minutes. That became my cardio workout."
