HEALTH ISSUE: OverTime ups Heart Attack Risk

Overtime ups heart
attack risk by 60%

After accounting for risk factors, doctors found
that working between three and four hours of
overtime each day was associated with a greater
risk compared to those who did no overtime

Paris: People who work three hours or more of overtime per day run a 60% higher risk of bad heart problems compared to those who work regular hours, a study published in the European Heart journal said.
The findings came from a long term research project into 6,014 British civil servants aged 36-61, two thirds of whom were men, who had healthy hearts at the start of the probe in the early 1990s.
At an 11-years monitoring point, 369 of the volunteers had either died of coronary heart disease (CHE) or had a non-fatal heart attack or angina.
After accounting for risk factors such as smoking, overweight and high cholesterol, doctors found that working between three and four hours of overtime each day was associated with a 60% greater risk compared to those who did no overtime.
Those who worked overtime tended to be slightly younger than the non overtime group, were likelier to be men rather than women and be in a higher occupational grade.
The medical investigators say that the link between cardiac problems and overtime seems clear but the cause is less so, given the complexities of heart disease and relationships in the workplace.

HEALTH ISSUE: A Blast to the test every 6 months...

Ultrasound waves as contraceptive?
A Blast To The Testes Every 6 Months Can Provide A Temporary & Reversible Form Of Birth Control

London: Researchers from University of North Carolina believe a blast of ultrasound to the testes can safely stop sperm production for six months.
The scientists, in fact are beginning to conduct tests to see if ultrasound can be used as a reversible male contraceptive, reports the BBC News website.
Lead researcher James Tsuruta said: "We think this could provide men with up to six months of reliable, low-cost, non hormonal contraception from a single round of treatment.
With a grant of $100,000  from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation the researchers hope to offer a new birth control option to couples throughout the world.
"Our long-term goal is to use ultrasound from therapeutic instruments that are commonly found in sports medicine or physical therapy clinics as an inexpensive, long-term, reversible male contraceptive suitable for use in developing to first world nations."
Once the test is has stopped producing sperm and all "sperm reserves" have been depleted, the man will be temporarily infertile. The effects of ultrasound waves would easily wear off and leave men with no adverse side effects, believe experts.
the search for a male "Pill" has intrigued researchers for decades. However, progress has proved extremely slow. Reasons include a lack of interest from pharmaceutical firms and a lingering belief that many women would not entrust the job of preventing pregnancy to men.
Early research has suggested that the method could be successful. However, experts warned that the long-term effects were still unknown.
The idea of using ultrasound waves has been around since the 1970s, but had failed to attract much scientific support. Then in 2007 another North Carolina study suggested that it could be effective at the same time as researchers in Italy found that the technique worked on dogs. Raffaella Leoci, from the University of Bari, who led the animal study, said: "It's great that many people are working on ultrasound -- it will make it easier to get the answers we need."

OVER & OUT FOR INDIA
Mathews, Kapugedera Take Snaga's
Boys To Semis After Initial Struggle

St Lucia: India's dreams of following Pakistan into the T20 World Cup semifinals evaporated after aninsipid and nearly uninspiring batting display here on Tuesday afternoon. Needing to beat Sri Lanka by at least 22 runs to stay in the hunt for a semifinal slot, they had to come out with all their big guns blazing; hoping that one or two big overs would somehow find theirway into the Beausejour Stadium.
In theevent, they never materialized, giving Sri Lanka an attainable target of 163 for five; they needed just 143 on a batting paradise to stay alive at least until the encounter between Australia and West Indies. They did one better though: They overhauled the target itself. off the last ball of the game, to all but storm into the semifinals.
In the late evening match, West indies will not only need to beat Australia but also do so with a huge margin to jump ahead on the run-rate. As really dawned on the till then cheering West Indians in the stands, a hush descented over them. The Indians had already fallen silent. Defending the impossible, India, after unleashing spinner Harbhajan Singh on a fast and bouncy track, handed the new ball to Ashish Nehara and rookie seamer Vinay Kumar on a haven for slow bowlers. It worked nicely as Nehra, after conceding a first-ball four, lured the dangerous Mahela Jayawardene into a suicidal edge.
Next over, Vinay trapped Sanath Jaysuriya too to raise the hopes of even the worst pessimist. At 6 for two, with not much batting to follow, it looked like the first part of the miracle would at least come true. Dilshan and Sangakarra, however, warded off the imminent danger by adding 43 quick runs. The Lanka captain then, with Mathews in tow, raised 62 runs to keep them well and truly in the hunt. After 15 overs, even though Sangakarra had just tumbled for 46, they seemed to be in sight of thier first target, if not an outright victory itself: 36 in 30 has never been beyond reach in T20. Dhoni rotated his bowlers fast and furiously, hoping to keep the Lankans guessing and on their toes. Harbhajan, Piyush and Yusuf bowled to a plan, keeping a firm eye on the 143-mark; yuvraj was used and promptly discarded Lanka broke out in the 16th over, hitting two fours and following it up with another two in the next; a six in the 19th over, snuffed out India's chances. Mathews hit another six in celebration. Last over. 13 required.
Earlier, India finally ceded to common sense and dropped the luckless Ravindra Jadeja. That wasn't all though"they also axed the off-colour Zaheer Khan and listless M Vijay. The opener's replacement, Dinesh Karthik, didn't exactly make Dhoni tool back in anger or regret though; but he at least made sure that the team got a start, which was just not forthcoming tioonow; 30 for no loss, and it seemed like a perfect launching pad.
