| In a first, lungs created in lab live on in rats Washington: US scientists reported important progre4ss towards building new human lungs by successfully implanting lab-cultivated cellos into a rat's lungs, and by creating an artificial device on a microchip that mimics the human lung. Yale University researchers managed to create lungs that worked from 45 to 120 minutes by using laboratory-cultivated cells and implanted them into rats, a scientific first. Separately, researchers with the Wyss Institute at Harvard University, Harvard Medical School and hildren's Hospital Boston created a device that acts like a human lung using blood vessel cells. It is about the size of a rubber eraser. The artificial lung can be used to test the effects of new medicine and toxins on human lungs, said Wyss Institute director Donald Ingber and the study's main author. The minilung-on-a-chip" merges a number of technologies in an innovative wqay" said MIT Institute professor Robert Langer. Both studies appear in Friday's edition of Science. For the first study, researchers took adult rat lungs and removed their existing cellular components. They preserved the matrix and branching structures of the airways and vascular system, which they later used to grow new lung cells. "When implanted into rats for short intervals of time )45 - 120 minutes), the engineered lungs exchanged oxygen and carbon dioxide similarly to natural lungs," they said. "This is an early step in the regeneration of entire lungs for larger animals and, eventually, for humans." said lead author Laura niklason from Yale University. Niklason however warned that it will take years of research with adult stem cells to see if lungs can be regenerated in vitro, successfully implanted into patients, and made sure they function properly. |
| 'Human fetus feels no pain before 24 weeks' Nerve Connections In Brain Not Formed Sufficiently To Allow Sensation, Says UK Govt-Funded Study  London: British health experts say the human fetus cannot fel pain before the age of 24 weeks, and so there is no reason to challenge UK's abortion limit.] The study says that nerve connections in the brain are not sufficiently formed to allow pain perception before 24 weeks. The government-commisioned study is a setback for anti-abortion activists, who want Britain's current 24-week time limit for terminations reduced. The study by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, published Friday, was recommended by lawmakers who are considering lowering the abortion limit. The doctors say there is increasing evidence that even after 24 weeks the fetus is in a state of "continuous sleep-like unconsciousness or sedation". The studies suggest that late abortions, permitted for serious abnormalities or risks to a woman's health, do not result in foetal suffering because of increasing evidence that the chemical environment in the uterus induces "a continuous sleep-like unconsciousness or sedation". The finding that the fetus is naturally sedated and unconscious in the womb, leading the panel to advise that anaesthetics for the foetus are not needed when it is terminated. Professor Allan Templeton, president of the Royal College, who chaired the review, said that research put forward by anti-abortion campaigners that the human foetus did feel pain at or before 24 weeks was based on evidence from premature babies. This did not apply to the fetus in the womb, he said. The review would appear to remove one strut of the argument by pro-life campaigners that the current abortion limit needs to be lowered, although they are likely to challenge the findings. Two years ago MPs voted on reducing the limit to 20 weeks, after the Conservative MP Nadine Dorries tried to change it by introducing an amendment to what was then the Human Fertlisation and Embryology Bill. The motion was defeated by a comfortable majority of 71. At the time David Cameron said he backed reducing the limt to 20 weeks. On Thursday Dorries, a foremer nurse and mother of three, said that there was 'much more support" in the new intake of MPs for a change to the limit. Nonetheless, many liberal Democrat MPs are though to be against reducing the limit. A Downing Street spokesman said that the prime minister would "continue to be guided by the science on the matter", the Telegraph reported on Friday. |

| Stem cells help reverse blindness due to burns Los Angeles: Dozens of people who were blinded or otherwise suffered severe eye damage when they were splashed with caustic chemicals had their sight restored with cornea transplants from their own stem cells-a stunning success for the cell-therapy field, Italian researchers reported. The treatment worked completely in 82 of 107 eyes and partially in 14 others, with benefits lasting up to a decade so far. One man whose eyes were severely damaged more than 60 years ago now has near-normal vision. Stem cell transplants offer ho;e to the thousands o9f people worldwide every year who suffer chemical burns on their corness from havy-duty cleansers or other substances at work or at home. The approach would not help people with damage to the optic nerve or macular4 degeneration, which involves the retina. Nor would it work in people who are completely bolind in both eyes, because doctors need at least some healthy tissue that they can transplant. In the study, published online by the New England journal of Medicine, researchers took a small number of stem cells from a patient's healthy eye, multiplied them in the lab and placed them into the burned eye, where they were able to grow new corneal tissue to replace what had been damage. Since the stem cells are from their own bodies, the patients do not need to take anti-rejection drugs. Adult stem cells have been used for decades to cure blood cancers as leukemia and diseases like sickle cell anemia. But fixing a problem like damaged eyes is a relatively new use. Researchers have been studying cell therapy for a host of other diseases, including diabeetes and heart failure, with limited success. Adult stem cells, which are found around the body, are different from embryonic stem cells, which come from human embryos and have stirred ethical concerns because removing the cells requires destroying the embryo. |
| 'Brain Scans predict your action better than you can' Brain Imaging in Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Neuroscience  Washington: Brain scans may be able to predict what you will do better than you can yourself, and might offer a powerful tool for advertisers or health officials seeking to motivate consumers, researchers said. They found a way to interpret "real time" brain images to show whether people who viewed messages about using sunscreen would actually use sunscreen during the following week. The scans were more accurate than the vounteers were, Mily Falk and cooeagues at the University of California Los Angeles reported in the Journalof Neuroscience. "We are trying to figure out whether there is hidden wisdom that the brain contains," Falk said in a telephone interview. "Many people 'decide' to do things, but then don't do them," Matthew Liebeman, a professor of pasychology who led the study, added. But with functional magnetic resonance imaging or FMRI, Falk and colleagues were able to go beyond good intentions to predict actual behgavior. FMRI uses a magnetic field to measure blood flow in the brain. It can show which brain regions are more active compared to others, but requires careful interpretation. |
| Not just wrinkles, Botes jab can kill emotions too  London: Botox may help you look young, but it can affect the development of emotions curtailing your happiness, a new study has claimed. The research into Botox used to fight facial wrinkles found tht those who are unable to smile are less likely to be happy. Botox is made of an extremely toxic protein called Botulinum toxin that temporarily paralyses the muscles that cause creases. But, researchers at Barnard College in New York found that lack of facial expressions may influence emotional experiences as well. They found that being unable to smile at the time of happiness feeds back to the brain reducing the intensity of feeling, the Telegraph reported. "With Botox , a person can respond otherwise normally to an emotional event, such as a sad movie scene, but will have less movement in the facial muscles that have been injected, and therefore less feedback to the brain about such facial expressivity," said lead researcher Joshua Davis. For their study, Davis and his colleague Ann Senghas led a team of researchers who showed people emotionally charged videos bothy before and after they were injected with either Botox. or restylane - a substance injected into lips or facial wrinkles that fills out sagging skein. Restylane was used as a control because it simply adds filler but doesn't limit the movement of muscles. Compared with the control group, the Botox participants "exhibited an overall significant decrease in the strength of emotional experience," the researchers said. The simple act of smiling can help make you feel happy, while frowning can bring down your mood, they added. |
| An hour of TV ups heart disease risk by 7% The Link is Strong Even In Those With Healthy lifestyles & High Fitness Levels, Says Study  Washington: Every hour you put in watching the World Cup on television, your risk of dying from a heart disease increases by 7%, says a new study. British researchers have found that if the average of four hours of television a day in the study were reduced to one hour, then 8% of deaths from heart disease could have been prevented. The link between TV and heart disease was still strong even when lack of exercise, obesity, diet and smoking were taken into account. This implies that watching TV was independently linked to heart disease and the effect is not simply due to be inactive while watching television. Conducted by the Medical Research Council, the research, examined more than 13,000 healthy middle-aged men and womenin Norfolk. Over the 10-year study, 373 of the 13,197 participants or one in 35 died from heart disease. Of these deaths. 30 could have been prevented if the average person wtched one hour of television per day instead of four. "Our bodies are not designed to sit for long periods and we should be aware that, as we put in the TV hours watching the World Cup, out risk of heart disease is probably increasing," the Telegraph quoted Katrien Wijndaele, co-author of the study from the MRC, as saying. "It might seem onvious that watching TV is linked to heart disease but it's really crucial that we look closely at how our lifestyles affect our health in order to develop more effective ways of improving the health of the nation. This type of research is a crucial part of informing public health advice. "We need further research to see if other sedentaryactivities, like sitting behind a computer or in the car, generat the same results. However, we chose to focus onj TV as it's the most widespread sedentary leisure activity where people have an active choice to dramatically change their behaviour," headded. UIf Ekelund, co-author of the study from the Medical Research Council said, "If my normal risk of dying by heart disease was 10% and I also watched four hours of television a day (the national average) my risk would jump to 13%. "In the future, doctors could use the number of bours spent in front of the TV as part of their assessment of our overall risk of heart disease," he added. | Why are women more sensitive to stress than men Women are more likely to suffer from depression and stress out than their cool male counterparts. New research suggests there might be a biological reason for the gender difference. The new study, done on rats, finds females are more sensative to low levels of an important stress hormone and less able to adapt to high levels of it than males. since rats do have some of the same neural systems we do, the rat research could have implications for humans, though stress in humans is more complicated than in rodents, the researchers say. It has long been recongnised that women have a higher incidence of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder,said study researcher Rita Valentino, a bhavioral neuroscientist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. But the underlying biological mechanisms for that difference have been unknown. Valentino's research focuses on corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) a hormone released in the brain in responses to stress, in bothy humans and rats. CRF is a neurotransmitter, meaning it helps communicate signals between brain cells. Some neurons "send out" the CRF signal while others contain receptors to receive it. Valentino and her colleagues analysed the brains of rats as they responded to a swin stress test, aimed to trigger the release of the CRF hormone. In female rats, neurons had receptors for CRF that bound more tightly to the hormone than in male rats, and so were more responsive to CRF. Also, after exposure to stress, male rats had an adaptive response, called internalization, in their brain cells. Their cells reduced the number of CRF receptors, and became less responsive, to the homone. In female rats this adaptation did not occur. "This is an animal study, and we cannot say that the biological mechanism is the same in people, " Valentino said, adding that other mechanisms play a role in human stress responses, including the actions of other hormons. However, "researchers already known that CRF regulation is disrupted in stress-related psychiatric disorders, so this research may be relevant to the underlying human biology," she said. In addition much of the previous research on stress disorders in animal models used only male rodents, so important sex differences may have gone undetected, Valentino said. "Pharmacology researchers investigating CRF antagonists as drug treatments for depression may need to take into account gender differences at the molecular level," she said. |
| 'No link between cancer in kids & cellphone towers' British scientists who conducted the largest study yet into cellphone masts and childhood cancers sy that living close to a mast does not increase the risk of a pregnant woman's body developing cancer. In a study looking at almost 7,000 children and patterns of early childhood cancers across Britain, the researchers found that those who developed cancer before the age of five were no more likely to have been born close to a mast than their peers. "These results are reassuring," said Paul Elliot, director of the centre for environment and health at Imperial College Londaon, who worked on the study. "We found no pattern to suggest that the children of mums living near a base station during pregnancy had a greater risk of developing cancer than those who lived eosewhere." Use of cellphones has increased dramatically in recent years and questions have been raised about possible health effects. The authors cautioned they were unable to get information about individual exposure among molthers-to-be to a cell phone handset. |
| Woman's body is picky about sperm Allow Pregnancy Only After Compatibility Of Male Has Been Established Sydney: A woman's body may be unconsciously selective about sperm, allowing some men's to progress to pregnancy but killing off the chances of less suitable mathces, an Australian researcher said on Wednesday. University of Adelaide Professor Sarah Robertson said her research suggested that sperm contains "signalling molecules" that activate immunity changes in a woman so her body accepts it. But some apparently healthy sperm failed to activate these changes, leading to the suggestion that the female system can be "choosy" about its biological mate, she said. "It's rather like a two way dance," Robertson said. "The male provides information that increases the chances of conception and progression to pregnancy, but the female body has a quality control system which needs convincing that his sperm is compatible. "That's where the dance can go wrong with some couples - if the male signals are not strong enough, or if the female system is too 'choosy'." Robertson said sperm was more likely to fail if the woman had not previously been exposed to that man's semen for at least three months. "We used to think that if a couple couldn't get pregnant, and the man's semen test was normal, the problem lay with woman. But it appears this is not always the case," Robertsion said. The researchers plan to continue their work, which they hope will lead to improved treatments for infertility and miscarriages. The research trial has primarily been on mice and pigs, but Robertson said there was some indication that it will have the same or similar effect on human females. "At the moment we've done lots of work on mice and pigs and we've done a little bit of work with human cells and we've found if we put seminal flued on cells in vitro that we get the same kind of changes in human cells. We also have a little bit of preliminary work from people showing or suggesting that the same things are going to occur in real in vitro situations. " she said. She further commented that this discovery could be extremely important from an evolutionary perspective, because it means the female body has the ability to decide when the time is right for pregnany. |

The Indians are smarting from the humiliating loss on Tuesday. They did try to experiment with the team's composition in that dress rehearsal match and suffered. Now, as the momentum has shifted towards the Lankans, MS Dhoni's men will try to make amends and take home the trophy which has stayed away from their hands for 15 years now. Harbhajan Singh, hero of the win against Pakistan, will be back in the team along with pacer Ashish Nehra to bolster the bowling attack led by Zaheer Khan. Praveen Kumar and Ravinder Jadeja are the other two expected to play on Thursday. The team management is reportedly pleased with Jadeja's bowling but they want runs from his bat too. As for India batting, Dinesh Karthik, who has come in for injured Virender Sehwag, will open wiht Gautam Gambhir who is expected to once provede the foundation for the later batsman to capitalise upon, Gambhir, who failed to get a big score in the last league match,must be hungry for a big knock now. He has looked in good form and the team would be looking to ride on a Gauti special. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma would be under pressure to deliver and if they get going, Dhoni and Suresh Raina's job would become that much easier. Dhoni's dismissal in the last match made a huge difference to the team, which succumbed to Ferveez Maharoof's guile on Tuesday, The Indian skipper is aware that he has a key role to play in the middle overs. The Sri Lankans will start as the favourites. They mostly are when they play at home. As for the statistics. Lanka have won the last two Asia Cups and are expected to make it a hat-trick in front of the home crowd. | Big B in blame game But trade disagrees that sharper editing could have saved mani Ratnam's film  Blame it on the editing.Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan did exactly that on the weekend. In his tweets with Filmfare editor Jitesh Pillaai, the concerned father expressed the view that it was the editing of Mani ratnam's Raavan that led to the inconsistency of the performance of the protagonist Abhishek Bachchan. Amitabh implied that had the film not been so "sadly edited". Abhishek's erratic behaviour (and all that jazz about his 10 heads) would have been easier for the common man to comprehend. One of the Big B's tweets read: "Lot of merited film deited out, causing inconsistent performance and narrative, but what presentation!" However, trade specialists don't seem to be in tandem with the legend's views. Says trade guru Taran Adarsh. "the film (Hindi) opened to a weak response. It has collected only 45% of what Kites and Raajneeti collected over the opening weekend. It has fared very average in the UK too." Taran who has been following Amitabh on the micro-biogging site says, "When a film flops everything about it seems at fault. It is very easy to blame the editing. But, according to9 me. Raavan failed because the script was too linear, It was stretched, If the editing is consistent, it can make a film slicker, it can make a performance look better, But inconsistent editing can't save a bad performance. In my opinion, Aishwarya was good in the film, however, Abhishek lacked the maturity for this role. If the editing was bad, then even Ash's performance would have got diluted." The other trade consultant Amod Mehra, adds, "Everything about Raavan except the cinematography was mediocre." He feels the performances of all the lead actors was strictly below average. A staunch supporter of the editor of Raavan, Sreekar Prasad, says, "Sreekar has won 11 National Awards, So to blame his editing is the lamest excuse one can throw." Whatever the implications, the debate continues. Unfortunately, Bollywood feels that Mani's labour of love doesn't merit the debate either, It is reportedly a dead duck. |
