Reaching For Higher Ground

What is spirituality or, rabbaniyat, to use the Quranicteam? it is the elevation of the human condition to a plane where the mind is focused on the higher, non material realities of a godly existence. The one who gives all his attention to woridly things and who centres his attention on mere appearnaces is regarded as being material minded. Conversely, one who rises above material things or appearances, who finds his focus of interest in non-material things, is regarded as being spiritual or godly. The latter is one who follows the injunction of the Quran: 'Be devoted servants of God'(3L79). That is, one who lives a 'God-oriented life.
Spirituality can answer the questions, 'Who am I? What is the purpose of my life? What is the creation plan of the Creator?" A seeker is able to find true spirituality by finding rational answers to such questions. Whereby he receives spirituality at the mind or thinking level. True spirituality is based on contemplation and reflection. It is an intellectual activity. When the seeker discovers the truth, his life enters a new phase - that is, building his personality according to spiritual principles. This intellectual journey is two-fold, one is to solve the riddle of why human beings under go negative experiences in this world and the other is to offer positive solutions. It addresses the paradox of human being having been given the freedom to make their own moral choices, and their frequent misuse of this freedom - a course of action which causes them to repeatedly face situations in which people do each other harm; losses are incurred because of others' injustice; severe provocations are suffered because of untoward experiences. At such times spirituality helps us to covert negativity into positivity.
Rabbaiyat provides us with the right philosophy of life. It is a guidebook. leading us out of the darkness of ignorance, and ushering us into the light of reality. Spirituality is our helpful companion in times of difficulty. It saves us from succumbing to adversity. It is the art of crisis management, from which we derrive intellectual inspiration when in need. Everyone is in need of spirituality, whether rich or poor, powerful or powerless. Spirituality provides a man with a starting point of life. Anyone who is deprived of spirituality will also be deprived of this starting point.
The spiritual path enables us to see things that remain invisible to the physical eye. It enables us to learn lessons from the past and see the future in the present. It is the source of huyman progress.
Repeatedly, we find occasions in life, when we feel helpless. It is when we feel that life has become rudderless and without direction, that a spiritual saviour holds out hope, as a source of courage and convication.
How is that one who seeks out the divine and who treads the path of enquiry is able to acquire superlative human qualities? The answer is that the ends of a seeder and what he seeks are inseparable from God who is the source of all goodness. God is thus the source of inspiration for everyone.
Spirituality produces God-oriented thinking in him. His life thus becomes a God-oriented life. This is what makes a spiritual person unassailable. A spiritual person enters into such profound communion with God that he becomes very powerful indeed

Grapes can Help and reduce heart disease:

Grapes can help
reduce heart
disease: Study

London: The humble grapes could help inprove heart function and reduce diabetes. American scientists have claimed.
Researchers at the University of Michigan found that eating the fruit could slow a 'down hill sequence" of high blood pressure and insulin resistance that might lead to a development of those conditions.
The scientists, after an animal test, discovered that a grape-enriched diet can prevent risk factors for metabolic syndrome -- a condition which is often a precursor to type 2 diabetes.
For their study, the researchers fed laboratory rats a blend of green, red and black grapes as part of a high-fat American style diet and compared them with another test group fed with a similar diet full of fat and sugars.
After three months, they found that the rats that received the grape enriched diet had lower blood pressure, better heart function, and reduced indicators of inflammation in the heart and the blood than rats who received no grape powder. Rats also had lower triglycerides and improved glucose tolerance.
Heart surgeon Dr Steven Bolling, head of the university's Cardioprotection Research Laboratory, said: "The possible reasoning behind the lessening of metabolic syndrome is that the phytochemicals were active in protecting the heart cells from the damaging effects of metabolic syndrome. In the rats, inflammation of the heart and heart function was maintained far better.
"Although there's not a particular direct correlation between this study and what humans should do, it's very interesting to postulate that a diet higher in phytochemical-rich fruits, such as grapes, may benefit humans."
Although, he added those wanting to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of diabetes should follow some tried-and-true advice such as eating a healthy diet low in saturated fat.

1st Time World Remote Control HEart Operation

In  a 1st, surgeon
fixes heart from
outside theatre

London: Doctors at a British hospital have carried out the first heart rhythm operation using a remote-controlled robot and say its success means patients could be treated by doctors in other cities, or even other countries.
Andre Ng. who performed the procedure on Wednesday from outside the operating theater, said it went very well and the patient's irregular heart rhythm was restored to normal within an hour. "It exceeded our expectations and we achieved what we set out to in very good time, " said Ng, a consultant cardiologist and electro physiologist at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital.
Robotic surgery is becoming more common in wealthy nations suffering from gynecological cancer, coronary artery disease, kidney cancer, and bladder cancer. Ng said he was the first doctor in the world to carry out this type of remote controlled operation on a human patient using a system called a Remote Catheter Manipulation System.
The device was developed by the US company Catheter Robotics Inc, which says it hopes remote operation may be carried out on patients in future all over the world.
The procedute carried out by Ng involved inserting thin wires called catheters into blood vessels at the top of the groin and then threading them up into the chambers of the heart.
Despite being outside the operating theater during the procedure, Ng said he felt in "compete control" and could see and speak other medical staff who were beside the patient. Ng said he could see the remote-controlled robotic arm being used in more far off situation in the future.

UNIQUE HONOUR

Director Suresh Krissna is an excited man these days. And the reason for his excitement is his 50th film, Ilaignan, in which he is working with the Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi!
Explaining how the project came his way, the director said, "Pa Vijay had met the CM to discuss a project they had in mind. It was a big project and the Chief minister told Pa Vijay that he would require a senior director to handle it. So, Pa Vijay called me and asked me if he could recommend my name to the CM. I replied that I would be honoured to direct this film and that I couldn't expect a bigger project than this. I told him that I would be overjoyed if I could be even a small part of the CM's illustrious career. I then went and met the CM and after that, have been interacting with him consistently over the past few months."

Anuja Iyer - PRONOUNCE IT RIGHT!

Hail Thamizh!

Beauty and brains rarely go together, but when they do, the combination is lethal. Anuja Iyer of Unnaipol Oruvan fame has time and again proved to be quite a head turner after making a mark on the silver screen with some commendable perfomances, and now, she's putting her hand to the pen.
As a celebrity columnist for a popular website that focusses on the happenings in tinseltown. the actress hosts a fortnightly column and writes about her personal experiences in the field. "As actors, we constantly express, emote, laugh, cry, share and also make the audience a part of out lives. And I thought, why stop with just expressing myself on-screen, where one portrays emotions according to the director's vision of a character? What about my very own thoughts?"
Thus began her journey of expressing herself in words. In her firstpiece, she toes a popular line -- giving Tamil its rightful due. "When I hear people pronouncing "Thamizh' as 'Tamil' (TAM-il), I immediately ask them to roll their tongue and stick it on the upper jaw to bring out the 'zha' in 'Thamizh', " writes Anuja.
But Tamil is nhot the only subject that excites Anuja. Anything from interesting happenings on the sets to trends in the industry inspires her. Even as she works her grey cells, Anuja is busy with her next project, Kaadhal to Kalyaanam, directed by Milind Rau.
With enough on her plate, looks like Anuja is quite the busy bee.

Green Tea fight with Glaucoma

Green tea may help fight glaucoma

Washington: Green tea, renowned for its powerful antioxidant and disease-fighting properties, has been found to help protect against glaucoma and other eye diseases.

The new study the first documenting how the lens, retina and other eye tissues absorb these substances, opens the possibility that green tea may protect against glaucoma and other common eye diseases. glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged, leading to progressive, irreversible loss of vision.
Chi Pui Pang, department of ophthalmology and visual sciences, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and colleagues point out that the so-called green tea "catechins" have been among a number of antioxidants thought capable of protecting the eye.
Those include vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein and zeaxanthin.Until  now, however, nobody knew if the catechins in green tea actually passed from the stomach and gastrointestinal tract into the tissues of the eye.
Pang and his collegues resolved that uncertainty in experiments with lab rats that drank green tea, said a release of the American Chemcial Society (ACS).
Analysis of eye tissues showed beyond a doubt that eye structures absorbed singnificant amounts of individual catechins. The effects of green tea catechins in reducing harmful oxidative stress in the eye lasted for up to 20 hours . "Our results indecate that green tea consumption could benefit the eye against oxidative stress," the study concludes.

Health Issue - Painkiller

Painkiller from body's heat
messenger?

Washington: Researchers have discovered the body's own "heat messenger" , which helps nerves feel pain, and said that they hope to use it to design a new, safer class of painkillers.
They found heat activates basic fatty acids similar to capsaicin, the compound that gives chili peppers their kick, and found two potential ways to block the sensation. "For the first time we have the opportunity to try to block pain at its source, " Kenneth Hargreaves of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, who led the strdy, said.
They are now working to develop either a pill that people could take to block the effects of these natural "heat messengers" , or engineered immune system proteins called monoclonal antibodies that could be infused to mop them up.

5-minutes colon cancer test
could save thousands

London: A Five-minute colon cancer test could reduce the number of deaths from the disease by about 40% , a new study says.
British researchers followed more than 170,000 people for about 11 years. Of those, more than 40,000 had a "flexiscope" test, and and exam that removes polyps, small growths that could become cancerous.
The test invloves having a pen-sized tube inserted into the colon so doctors can identify and remove small polyps. Experts used the test on people in their 50s. In the UK, government-funder colon cancer screening doesn't start until 60.

Arun Vijay - ON A HAPPY NOTE

DELAY NOT A
        DILEMMA

There's a slight delay in the release of Arun Vijay's next flick Maanja Vellu, but the star is not nonplussed about it. Reason? The delay is due to requests from theatre owners who have a long list of films waiting to be screened. These films haven't been screened because of the cricket season that's been hogging audience interest. Maanja Velu, which also features Karthik in an important role, will now release on May 21.
"All the theatres that screened our unit's previous hit Malai Malai (MM) wanted to screen Maanja... too and requested us to postpone the release date," says Arun, who appears bald in the climax of the film.
"The owners who screened MM are close to our team and they think that we give the audience the right mix in terms of commercial ingredients," he adds. Meanwhile, the details of his next flick, Kaval Thurai, which will, as the title suggests, provide an insight into the functioning of the police department.

Amrita Rao - POLITICALLY INCLINED

Bollywood to Poliwood?

Amrita Rao recently had a power-packed rendzvous in mid-air when she happened to meet the former CM and good friend Riteish Deshmukh's dad Vilasrao deshmukh on a flight. The two were seated next to each other, and while most would've expected their conversation to revolve around films, Amrita, however steered it towards politics. Having a heart-to-heart chat with the politico, she could almost be mistaken for a journalist, with a barrage of questions she had about the state of affairs in the city. From the water problems to traffic congestion, the two discussed just about everything.
Convinced with Deshmukh's vision of making the city into a world city like Singapore, the pettie actress even shared her inputs as a citizen. Impressed, Deshmuch even suggested that Amrita consider joining politics at some point. Now, the hottie giving up Bollywood for 'Poli'wood  seems unlikely. However, we're sure that a pretty face in politics might just prove to be an inspiration for many around. So, what say, Amrita?
